'One Night Only' Director Removed Nudity Because People Dislike Sex on Screen
“One Night Only” director Will Gluck doesn’t want you to overthink it.
The filmmaker has been fielding a lot of inquiries about the premise, logic and loopholes of his new movie, a raucous romantic comedy about the one night a year where premarital sex is legal. (Think “The Purge,” but for banging instead of murder.) Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”) plays Allie, an aspiring singer who channels her talent through embarrassing jingles in drug commercials. Callum Turner (“Eternity”) portrays Owen, a pizza shop owner whose long-term girlfriend decides she wants to sleep with other people on this holy night. The two strangers keep running into each other during 12 hours of messy mayhem in New York City.

In the past month or so, something has been happening with movie trailers: They’re making me want to go see movies again. Whether actually seeing those movies is in my own best interest is a more complex story, but recently, a handful of trailers have stopped me in my tracks and made me ask things like: “OK, but what does that wicker dick do?,” “Did I miss that Chris Hansen was that blond and unhinged?,” and “Does this rom-com take place under a totalitarian government regime?” Over the past decade, since the majority of movies began spawning from established IP and franchise juggernauts, trailers have been widely criticized for laying out the entire plots of the movies they were supposed to be teasing. But before that time, trailers did things like build curiosity—and one recent example made me desperate for more information as it played ahead of my other moviegoing experiences, during my social media scrolls, and eventually, in my nightmares. One Night Only’s trailer begins with a premise I’d simply never considered before: “Finding love is hard—try doing it when single people are only allowed to have sex one night of the year.”

Going into a romcom, there are always the same questions. Will there be genuine chemistry? Will the rom and the com be equal in parts? And, for the last decade and change, will this be the one that finally resurrects a genre long past its prime? But for Universalâs glossy late summer offering One Night Only, notably the first wide-releasing romcom since April, there are more probing questions than usual. The film is the ungainly result of a four-cocktails-in elevator pitch which imagines a world where single people are only legally allowed to have sex on one night of the year, an idea that has seen it been referred to as âSex Purgeâ.
