Live: Commonwealth Bank reports $10.9b annual profit, ASX to slip as US-Iran optimism fades

The nation's second-largest company Commonwealth Bank has reported its annual net profit rose to $10.9 billion.

The Australian share market is expected to start its day lower on fading optimism about a US-Iran peace deal happening any time soon.

Private health insurers are potentially seeking too much access to patients' confidential medical information, through what has been described by the Australian Private Hospitals Association as "aggressive" audit practices.

Under agreements with patients and hospitals, insurers are entitled to ask a medical practitioner for a patient's notes relating to an episode of treatment, to ensure the correct procedure item numbers were billed.

CBA profits hit $11 billion, dividend raised

Commonwealth Bank has notched up $11 billion in cash profit fuelled by growth across its vast loan and deposit portfolios, but it also warned economic growth was slowing amid higher interest rates and inflation.

CBA on Wednesday said cash net profit after tax rose 7 per cent in the year to June, as its operating income grew by 6 per cent, helped by growth in CBA’s key markets of home loans, business loans, consumer lending and household and business deposits.

Despite strong growth in the year to June, however, CBA also said new applications for mortgages had fallen 15 per cent since the May budget, as the housing market slows due to higher interest rates and a tightening in tax concessions for property investors. The bank also said costs from soured loans had increased due to cost of living pressures and increased economic uncertainty.

CBA reports $10.9b profit but warns economic growth is slowing

Commonwealth Bank has reported a 7 per cent increase in profit to $10.98 billion driven by loan and deposit growth, but says mortgage applications are down 15 per cent since the federal budget while growth is slowing as higher interest rates and costs put pressure on family budgets.

Reports: Knicks swap picks with Lakers at Nos. 24, 25

The Knicks advance the Tuesday trade action at the 2026 NBA Draft with separate deals involving the Lakers, Mavericks and Suns.

Cameron Carr is drafted by the Knicks, but is reportedly on the move to L.A.

Coming off their first NBA championship in 53 years, the Knicks reportedly opted out of the No. 24 selection in the 2026 NBA Draft, and eventually the first round altogether. They picked up several Second Round picks and cash considerations in the process.

Sources: New York traded No. 25 pick Sergio De Larrea to the Dallas Mavericks for No. 30 Koa Peat and two second-round picks. And then the Knicks traded Peat to the Phoenix Suns for three-rounders and cash. So Knicks move out of the first round — pick up 5 seconds and cash.

Lakers trade up to No. 24 pick, select Cameron Carr

The Lakers made a trade to move up to the No. 24 pick and select Cameron Carr out of Baylor.

The Lakers made sure they got their player in the first round on Tuesday.

Los Angeles made a last-minute trade, moving up one spot to the No. 24 pick to select Cameron Carr, a guard out of Baylor.

It didn’t take much for the Lakers to complete the deal as all they had to do was send some cash to the Knicks for the pick. However, because of the wonderful new CBA, the Lakers will be hard-capped at the second apron by sending out cash in a deal.

Reports: Mavericks acquire Sergio De Larrea in four-team Draft night trade

The Mavericks made a big draft night trade to help reshape their team

The Dallas Mavericks entered the 2026 NBA Draft with the #9 pick, the #30 pick and a fair amount of trade rumors swirling around them. After selecting Morez Johnson, Jr. at #9, things went dreadfully quiet on the trade front. As subsequent picks were made and the minutes ticked by, it seemed apparent that Dallas would be making a selection at #30 instead of packaging that pick with a veteran in an effort to move up the draft board. Any hope at picking up a young guard to help in the rebuild looked bleak.

Knicks, Lakers swap picks in NBA Draft; New York takes Sergio De Larrea

The New York Knicks went off the beaten path with their first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

The New York Knicks came into the draft with the 24th overall pick, but they made a small swap with the Los Angeles Lakers, who held the selection directly after them.

The Lakers were eyeing Baylor guard Cameron Carr, whom they asked the Knicks to select with their pick. Carr is the son of former NBA player Chris, who was in the 1997 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, but lost to a rookie Kobe Bryant.

Carr is one of the best shooters in the draft, so it’s a bit of a disappointment to see him not in orange and blue. However, the Knicks were willing to move one pick knowing Carr could have been the Lakers’ target.

Nearly 600 staff at the National Emergency Management Agency are estimated to be owed $1.8 million in underpayments, with the agency referring itself to the watchdog for systemic payroll breaches.

An unidentified number of staff are also thought to have been overpaid at least $1.5 million due to "administrative errors," interim coordinator-general Pat Hetherington told Senate estimates on Wednesday.

"I do want to stress that this is preliminary data and I don't want that to cause concern amongst our workforce," he said.
