Republic of Ireland midfielder Finn Azaz ready for the biggest game of his life

Finn Azaz is ready for the biggest game of his life as the Republic of Ireland seek to take a huge step towards the World Cup in Prague.

Ireland face Czechia in Prague, knowing that a win would leave then just one home game away from qualifying for soccer's biggest event.

Azaz has played a major role in helping Ireland get to this stage looks certain to be named in the starting XI at the Fortuna Arena (7.45pm Irish time).

Having turned in his best performance in a green shirt in Ireland’s 2-0 victory over Portugal, Azaz went one better in Hungary, with his dynamic running from midfield and support of Troy Parrott, helping to create the most unlikely of comebacks.

The Southampton star who is striving to be a hero for his country

Playing for your nation is undoubtedly one of the biggest honours of any footballer's career.

Of course, playing for your domestic side is a privilege, as only a select few ever make it as a pro.

But, to be able to say that you wore your national team colours, goes way beyond club allegiances.

Several Southampton players will be able to say they lined up for their nations with pride during the international break, with Cameron Bragg, Cyle Larin, Daniel Peretz and Shea Charles just a few names who will be kept busy over the break, playing for the likes of Scotland U21s and Northern Ireland.

The playmakers: Finn Azaz and Pavel Sulc hold the keys to unlock defences in Prague clash

If Finn Azaz finishes in the deep-lying midfield role he adopted for the second-half against Hungary last November, he can expect to come into contact with Pavel Sulc at the Fortuna Arena on Thursday night.

Azaz did a good impression of German maestro Toni Kroos on that fateful Sunday afternoon in Budapest, dropping to the base of midfield where he lasered balls into the Hungarian box, including a delicate assist for Troy Parrott’s second goal.

Throughout this World Cup qualification campaign, the 25-year-old has shown his mettle while maintaining a creative streak off the left of Ireland’s front three. However, the return of Sammie Szmodics to the squad could see Azaz remain as the number six instead of the injured Josh Cullen.

Sydney: For Dilrabo Asadova, the key to Uzbekistan’s run to the quarter-finals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ has been a simple but effective approach – taking things one match at a time.
Returning to the continental stage for the first time in 23 years, the Central Asian side faced consecutive defeats at the hands of reigning champions China PR and three-time winners DPR Korea. But the Kotryna Kulbyte-led side lived up to their team motto of treating each day as a chance to create something special and recorded a stunning 4-0 win against debutants Bangladesh to book their knockout stage ticket.

History-makers Uzbekistan dream big at Women's Asian Cup

History-making Uzbekistan are targeting a major upset against South Korea in the Women's Asian Cup quarter-finals, with coach Kotryna Kulbyte on Friday urging her players to keep dreaming big.

The two sides clash in Sydney on Saturday with direct qualification to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil guaranteed for the winner.

While South Korea — the 2022 Asian runners-up — are making their fourth consecutive appearance in the knockout rounds, it is a first for the Uzbeks.

"There's always the danger of getting too emotional but it's part of the game. If you don't live and appreciate the moment, then there's no point," she said.

Women's Asian Cup tiers: Every participating nation, ranked

With four goals to her name already, ESPN's The Far Post laud Alanna Kennedy's move into the midfield and how her goalscoring is helping the Matildas. (1:40)

The Women's Asian Cup is moving into the knockout stage where 12 teams become eight, and every game is must win. Progression through the tournament isn't the only thing on the line either, with these next few games determining Women's World Cup qualification as well.

But the group stage concluding is the perfect time to assess how every team — still in contention and eliminated — is placed.

Not just a great piece of baseball media, it's the most apt description for Japan so far this tournament. Yes, the context of their group should be noted; they played three games for three wins, three clean sheets, and 17 goals scored. Their FIFA ranking? Eight. Their group opponent with the next closest ranking? Chinese Taipei at 40.
