Ricky Gervais just gave the best awards acceptance speech of his career, and he managed it by not showing up. At the Golden Globes, Wanda Sykes presented the award for Best Stand-up Comedy Performance, which Gervais was nominated in for his special Mortality. Gervais, despite being a Globes hosting vet, did not show up to the ceremony, and Sykes used that to her benefit. “Ricky Gervais, I love you … for not being here,” she said while presenting the award. “I love you, Ricky, but if you win, and I get to accept the award on your behalf, you are going to thank God.” The audience then laughed heartily, but she wasn’t done. “And the trans community!” she added.

Sykes is referencing the fact that Gervais, an atheist, drew criticism over jokes mocking trans people in his 2022 Netflix stand-up special “SuperNature.” Although Gervais has never addressed the backlash to those inflammatory comments, CEO Ted Sarandos came to his defense at the time, saying that comedians figure out where the line is by “crossing the line every once in a while. I think it’s very important to the American culture generally to have free expression.”

Tonight at the Golden Globes, presenter Wanda Sykes warned the absent Ricky Gervais that should he win another statuette, she’d be thanking “God and the trans community” on his behalf, regardless of the fact that he’s a famed atheist. And sure enough, Gervais won his second Golden Globe for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.

The award came in recognition of Mortality, Gervais’ latest Netflix special, released on December 30.

Elsewhere in her Globes appearance, Sykes made sure to get a dig in at each of the other nominees. She told Brett Goldstein (nominated for HBO’s The Second Best Night of Your Life) that he’s so “handsome” and “charming” that he “would have made a great Menendez brother.”

Review: Ricky Martin Live proves the singer is a showman for the ages – Brisbane Entertainment Centre (06.11.25)

It’s been a decade since Ricky Martin – undisputedly, the “King of Latin Pop” – graced Australian shores with his graceful energy, and last night on the Brisbane stop of his Ricky Martin Live tour he proved more than worth the wait.

At 53-years-old, the Puerto Rican performer appeared more youthful than ever, arising on stage, accompanied by a 9-piece-band and 7 equally enthused dancers, delivering an immediate crowd-rousing rendition of “Pégate” (“Get Closer”), a samba-inspired pop tune that ensured the Queensland crowd were in capable hands.

His vocals staggeringly strong in spite of the choreography he had set for himself, and a wide, beaming smile that only momentarily was wiped away when he slowed down proceedings for a slew of lush ballads (the Christina Aguilera collaboration “Nobody Wants To Be Lonely”, which even included a video segment from Aguilera, clearly a crowd favourite) – though when he admitted to forgetting the lyrics to the soft “She’s All I Ever Had” his wholesome humanity shone through at the innocence of such a faux paus – Martin was ever the elite showman across the 90 minutes he effortlessly dominated on the stage.
