Australia risks repeating Britain’s two decades of stagnation

Falling real wages and stagnant productivity threaten to turn Australia’s temporary living standards slump into a long-term British-style crisis.

The five-year erosion of Australians’ real incomes risks hardening into the same prolonged stagnation that has plagued Britain for nearly two decades – and unleashed its populist right-wing politics.  Bethany Rae

Anthony Albanese called Andy Burnham this week to congratulate the new British prime minister, but beneath the warm feelings and kind words, both Labo(u)r leaders seem to underestimate the sheer scale of the economic challenge ahead.

As inflation eats away at real wages on both sides of the globe, the response from London and Canberra looks remarkably similar: both centre-left prime ministers are falling back on an old economic playbook from the 1970s.

Australia on track for weakest living standards growth in more than a century

Australia is facing its weakest decade of living standards growth since the 1910s, with GDP per person rising just 4 per cent so far this decade amid stagnant productivity, high inflation and weak wage growth.

Former Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe warned the prolonged decline was “the fundamental economic problem the country faces” and said Australia needed major policy changes to encourage businesses to invest, expand and hire.

“Our living standards have stagnated, there has been no net growth in per capita incomes for seven or eight years – that’s after per capita income rising 1.5 per cent a year for nearly three decades,” Lowe said.

How far is too far? The risks of a tumbling property market

Brace for impact. Wednesday will deliver the figures on the monthly change in home prices. For the two-thirds of Australians who are already owners, it will be unwelcome news.

And as much as various federal government ministers turn themselves inside out to avoid admitting it, this was the house price correction that Labor engineered.

In its May budget, Treasury forecast that the government’s tax changes to help young people get into the housing market would lower property price growth by a modest 2 per cent against a background of roughly 6 per cent annual increases since 2000.

But tax tools can be too blunt to allow governments to guide the glide to a gentle price landing.

The housing correction we had to have will still be painful

A slide in house prices will improve affordability, but there are risks to confidence, consumer spending and housing supply that cannot be ignored.

Former prime minister John Howard once said no one ever complained to him that the price of their house was going up.

Will anyone complain to Anthony Albanese that house prices are going down at a rate of knots?

UN risks 'imminent financial collapse', secretary general warns

The United Nations is at risk of "imminent financial collapse" due to member states not paying their fees, the body's head has warned.

António Guterres said the UN faced a financial crisis which was "deepening, threatening programme delivery", and that money could run out by July.

He wrote in a letter to all 193 member states that they had to honour their mandatory payments or overhaul the organisation's financial rules to avoid collapse.

It comes after the UN's largest contributor, the US, refused to contribute to its regular and peacekeeping budgets, and withdrew from several agencies it called a "waste of taxpayer dollars". Several other members are in arrears or are simply refusing to pay.

Guterres warns of UN’s ‘imminent financial collapse’

The UN chief has told member states that the organization is at risk of “imminent financial collapse,” citing unpaid fees and a budget rule that forces the global body to return unspent money, a letter seen by Reuters on Friday showed.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has repeatedly spoken about the organization’s worsening liquidity crisis but this is his starkest warning yet, and it comes as its main contributor the United States is retreating from multilateralism on numerous fronts.

“The crisis is deepening, threatening programme delivery and risking financial collapse. And the situation will deteriorate further in the near future,” Guterres wrote in a letter to ambassadors dated January 28.

Guterres warns UN faces ‘imminent financial collapse’

UN chief Antonio Guterres calls on member states to address unpaid dues and overhaul world body’s financial rules.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the United Nations faces “imminent financial collapse” amid unpaid annual dues and other issues.

Al Jazeera on Friday reviewed a letter Guterres sent to all UN member states earlier this week, warning them that the global body faced a grave financial crisis.

The letter urged member states to agree to overhaul the UN’s financial rules or accept “the very real prospect of the financial collapse of our Organization” and called on them to pay their annual dues.

The United Nations chief is warning the world body faces "imminent financial collapse" unless its financial rules are overhauled or all 193 member nations pay their dues – a message likely directed at the United States and the billions it owes.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a letter to all UN member nations obtained on Friday by The Associated Press that cash for its regular operating budget could run out by July, which could dramatically affect its operations.
