Road linking Sydney to western NSW shut by damage to 194yo bridge

The Great Western Highway, linking Sydney to the state's west, is shut after damage to a 19th-century bridge was discovered.
Over the weekend the eastbound lanes were shut but overnight on Sunday further cracks and movement were identified, forcing the closure of the westbound lanes.
Geotechnical crews remain on the scene conducting assessments and emergency repairs, but the timeline for reopening is unclear.

Transport for NSW said crews had been working around the clock carrying out thorough geotechnical assessments at Mitchell's Causeway, also known as the Convict Bridge, after a defect was identified last Thursday.
On Monday morning, cracks were identified in the pavement of the westbound lane and geotechnical monitoring confirmed movement of the road's sub structure.
Transport for NSW deputy secretary road maintenance and resilience Matt Fuller said safety was the priority.

Highway fully closed at Victoria Pass after new defects discovered
UPDATE MARCH 9: Both lanes of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass have been closed following the discovery of further defects.
Cracks in the pavement were identified on Sunday night, March 8 and geotechnical monitoring confirmed movement of the road's sub structure.
This means both lanes are now closed between Lithgow and Mount Victoria until further notice, with diversions in place.
Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary Road Maintenance and Resilience Matt Fuller said safety is the priority.
"Following the information received in the early hours of this morning, we have closed both lanes of the highway to ensure safety for the travelling public," Mr Fuller said in a statement on March 9.
