Just a day or two before the start of the athletics program at the Commonwealth Games, the public was made aware that the top eight 100 metre sprinters in the rankings would be given a free ticket into the semifinals in a break from tradition.

It left the rest of the field, including Australians Rohan Browning and Eddie Nketia, to duke it out in a mass time trial across 11 heats.

It was a significant change to the usual system where everybody runs the heats and the top two in each race are automatic qualifiers, with the remaining runners trying to get through on times.

Aussie slams ‘extremely weird, unfair’ Games qualification rules

Australian star Rohan Browning believes the sprint qualification system in Glasgow is “unfair” and tailored to achieve a “desired outcome”.

As per the new rules for the Commonwealth Games, the top eight runners from the start of the competition season would directly qualify for the semi-finals without having to run heats.

It has traditionally been that the first two athletes to cross the line in the heats would progress, with the few extra spots filled up by the next fastest overall times.

Instead, the eight automatic qualifiers – including Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy – will be joined in the semi-finals by the 17 fastest times recorded in the heats.

‘Plainly unfair’: Rohan Browning slams 100m qualifying rules at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow: Rose Davies looked at the big screen and couldn’t work out how far ahead she was. She had taken the lead with two laps of the 10,000 metres to go, and she was flying.

But the screen was deceptive. Were her opponents closing? Had she gone too early?

“I was running scared. You know, anything could happen, and I had no idea where the girls were,” she said.

“I was trying to look on the big screen, but I was just going as hard as I could in the last 100 metres. But yeah, once I crossed the line, I was very happy.”

Rohan Dennis: Australian Olympic cyclist admits to driving despite ban after crash that killed wife

Australian Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has pleaded guilty to driving despite a five-year ban placed on him after a 2023 incident where he struck his wife with a car.

Dennis, 36, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday to face a charge of driving while disqualified after police pulled him over last month when he was behind the wheel with two children as passengers.

Last year, Dennis received a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to one aggravated count of creating the likelihood of harm under a plea deal where prosecutors dropped two more serious charges.

The court found he was not criminally responsible for Melissa Hoskins' death but had been reckless in his actions.

Rohan Dennis social media post of Porsche criticised as ‘offensive’ after wife Melissa Hoskins fatally struck by car

Hoskins, who was an Olympic cyclist like Dennis, was struck by his car in 2023. His return to Instagram included picture with caption ‘an absolute weapon’

The Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis, who 10 months ago was given a 17-month suspended sentence after his car fatally struck his wife, has returned to social media with a post describing a Porsche as an “absolute weapon”.

Melissa Hoskins, an acclaimed world and Olympic cyclist, died when she was struck by a car driven by her husband near their home at Medindie, in Adelaide’s inner north, in December 2023.

Dennis pleaded guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm, but was not held criminally responsible for his wife’s death.

Rohan Dennis: Olympic cyclist who ran over wife under fire over Porsche post

An Olympic cyclist whose wife died after he hit her with a car during a fight has been criticised for a social media post describing a Porsche as a "weapon".

Last year, Rohan Dennis received a 17-month suspended sentence over a 2023 car incident which killed Melissa Hoskins – also an Olympic cyclist – outside the couple's Adelaide home.

A court found Dennis was not criminally responsible for his wife's death, but had disregarded her safety after he continued to drive while she clung onto the vehicle.

South Australia's Victims' Rights Commissioner described Dennis' post as "deeply offensive" and said it showed "a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact" of his offending.
