Australia’s WorldTour race on my local roads fills me with pride, but as the years go on it feels like hosting international friends in a house that is visibly on fire
Sweat rolls off my brow as my legs roll powerless beneath me. Eyes fixed on my glowing bike computer screen, watching as my heart rate climbs faster than the power that can be produced by my legs. 150, 160, 170bpm. How long has that been? I wipe the bead of sweat obscuring the timer. Only five minutes.
I can barely squeeze in each breath, and the walls feel like they’re closing in. Yes, walls. Because it’s not the sun’s glare making this ride unbearable. Outside, it’s freezing. It’s October. But inside, we’re sealed within sterile white walls and glass windows glistening with condensation, sweat puddling on the floor.

The ground has shifted – this year, the balance of power is much more with the women at the Tour Down Under.
While the men's race next week is bigger and remains the flagship of the Adelaide cycling event, the women boast a stronger field.
For the first time, the women's Santos Tour has attracted all 14 WorldTour teams. The powerful Dutch-based SD Worx-Protime squad will make their Adelaide debut.

There's an old refrain that you're going to hear a lot in the next few weeks, and that's that the cycling season doesn't really start until Opening Weekend. A lot of people will joke – and some seriously believe – that everything before Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is basically just cycling friendlies, an extension of winter training.
Well, I'm here to tell them that they're wrong, and by subscribing to that point of view, you miss out on some of the best races of the year. With the Tour Down Under right around the corner, it's time for us to recognise and appreciate the actual start of the season.
