‘Russian Amazon’ hit by more massive Ukrainian strikes

London: Ukraine has launched new attacks on Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, in a sign of its capacity to send explosive drones into enemy territory amid upheaval in the Ukrainian military after public protests about the war.

The drones reached two of the retailer’s major warehouses in Krasnodar and Nevinnomyssk, in southern Russia to the east of Crimea, and led to flames shooting skyward in dramatic explosions that were caught on video and seen on social media.

The attacks came at a fractious time in Ukraine after some members of the public gathered on the streets of Kyiv to express their concern after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sacked the popular defence minister, Mykhailo Fedorov.

Russia's businesses under strain from Ukraine's attacks on Wildberries

Ukrainian drones have hit several retail warehouses belonging to Russia's biggest online retailer, Wildberries, in a matter of days, dealing a blow to a large number of small and medium-sized businesses.

After months of drone attacks on oil depots and refineries, Kyiv says it is now targeting logistics hubs used by Russians to buy military equipment, and disrupting supplies to the Russian army.

But it has also frustrated hundreds of Russian sellers who depend on online marketplaces for their livelihoods, making the war feel closer to home after almost four and a half years.

"I am a mother of a disabled child, I've built the business myself," one woman complained on an expletive-laden social media post that went viral.

Russian army deserters in Germany: 'No choice but to run'

Almost all asylum applications by Russian deserters are being denied by German authorities. DW and Russian-language media outlet Astra spoke to one of the young men who fears he'll be sent back to die on the front lines.

Nikita Zvezdov was just 15 years old when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. He was drafted into the Russian military straight after his 18th birthday in April 2024. Shortly before that, he had been failed at a vocational school he was attending in Krasnoyarsk and he believes that his expulsion was deliberate.

Over the past few years there have been reports that Russian students were not only drafted into the army but also prevented from passing their exams or deliberately flunked, so their conscription could not be hindered. This information has not been verified.

Wheels up, instructor down: Army aviation students to fly solo cross-country

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a… lone Army aviation student in the cockpit?

For the first time in decades, student pilots are flying solo across the country, the Army announced Thursday, as part of a curriculum change the schoolhouse hopes will create more skilled pilots.

The new aviators will prepare for the endeavor with two weeks of cross-country instruction before completing a check ride. Then, with naught but their fresh hands at the controls, the students will fly 50 to 100 nautical miles from Shell Army Heliport, navigating the national airspace without an instructor.

Second Lt. Kyler Suerth, one of the first flight school trainees in the new program, was anxious. “We are actually operating in civilian airspace the way aviators do,” the West Point graduate said before his flight in the release. “I am nervous, but every day I get a little less nerve wracked and a little more excited.”

Russian fuel shortages bite – but will Putin change tack in Ukraine war?

If you want to get a sense of the fuel crisis gripping Russia, all you need to do is spend a day driving around Moscow. At almost every petrol station we passed there was a queue of cars and lorries. Some lines were long, some short; some static, others moving steadily.

If there was no queue, that meant the garage had run out of fuel entirely and was closed.

Remember: this is Moscow, the wealthy, populated capital that draws in so much of Russia's vast resources. Even here the authorities cannot ensure there is enough petrol and diesel to keep Muscovites on the road.

Ukraine war is not going well for Russia – how dangerous is this for Vladimir Putin?

The mood regarding the war in Ukraine has changed in recent months. Ukrainian drones have struck Russian oil infrastructure, causing fuel shortages across Russia. And the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is exuberant about finishing the war from a “position of strength”.

The hope is that an economic crisis in Russia leads to social unrest and political instability, possibly resulting in the collapse of the ruling regime. This would not be an unprecedented event in Russian history. The Soviet Union rapidly unravelled amid economic and political crisis in 1991. But how likely is this scenario for Russia today?

I have travelled to Russia yearly since 2022 and there has been a clear change in the mood. In 2022, it was all about survival and adapting to the new reality of sanctions and war. Over the next couple of years, there was stabilisation and growing optimism about the economy’s ability to adapt. However, by 2026 there was talk of an economic recession, even before the current fuel shortages hit.

Russian superyacht sails through Strait of Hormuz despite blockade

A superyacht linked to one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's key allies has sailed through the Strait of Hormuz, despite the ongoing blockade of the critical shipping channel.

The 142m-long (465 feet) Nord luxury boat, linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov, travelled from Dubai to Muscat, Oman over the weekend, one of a few private vessels to transit through the strait in recent months.

Iran has engaged with Russia in high-level talks this week as its standoff with the US over the strait's re-opening continues.

Approximately one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies normally pass through the waterway.

Russian drone attacks persist despite Kremlin’s Easter ceasefire, Ukrainian forces say

Ukraine reports 469 violations of Putin’s 32-hour ceasefire, hours after deadly drone attacks on Odesa and Kherson

Russia continued to strike Ukrainian positions with drones after a Kremlin-declared Easter ceasefire took effect on Saturday, a Ukrainian military officer said.

“The ceasefire is not being observed by the Russian side,” said Serhii Kolesnychenko, a communications officer for the 148th Separate Artillery Brigade.

He told the Associated Press that while artillery fire had paused in the sector where his brigade was working, at the junction of the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, Russian forces continued to use drones to strike Ukrainian positions.

    Russia-Ukraine Orthodox Easter ceasefire begins

Both sides have agreed to observe the temporary truce, as US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war continue to stall.

A temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has come into force, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying Kyiv would respect it if Moscow did.

The ceasefire is due to last for 32 hours, from 4:00pm local time (13:00 GMT) on Saturday until midnight on Sunday, according to the Kremlin.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered the ceasefire on Thursday to coincide with Orthodox Easter celebrations, more than a week after Zelenskyy first made the proposal.

“Ukraine will adhere to the ceasefire and respond strictly in kind. The absence of Russian strikes in the air, on land, and at sea will mean no response from our side,” Zelenskyy said in a post on social media.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine over the Orthodox Easter weekend.

The ceasefire comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed earlier this week to pause to observe the holiday.

The ceasefire will start on Saturday at 4pm, local time, and finish at the end of Sunday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine over the Orthodox Easter weekend, following an earlier call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a pause in some of the hostilities to observe the holiday.

Russian Shahed Drone Operators Conduct Attacks on Ukraine From Belarus

Russia is using the territory of Belarus to control Shahed kamikaze drones during attacks on Ukraine.

This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a speech in Vilnius.

According to him, Russian strike drone operators conduct operations against Ukraine, including from the territory of Belarus. Belarusian territory is also used to maintain communications with drones during attacks on Ukraine.

It has been reported previously that Russian drones attempt to bypass Ukrainian air defense and drone interception systems by using Belarusian airspace.

Zelensky urges Belarusians to seek independence during visit to Vilnius

VILNIUS – Marking the anniversary of the 1863-1864 uprising, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in Vilnius on Sunday that Belarus is still forced to exist as a Russian general governorate, but that Belarusians must strive for genuine independence.

"Belarusians still have to win real independence and real protection of life. For now, sadly, Lukashenko's white spitz has been granted more rights than the people of Belarus. There was a chance in 2020 to change this. And, I'm sure, there will be another chance. But back then, support for Belarusians was simply not enough. And now we all feel how much harder, how much more expensive, and how much more dangerous it has become for everyone because of Belarus's dependence on Moscow – a dependence that is not decreasing," Zelensky said during Sunday Mass at Vilnius Cathedral commemorating the uprising.
