‘Can never say we’re done’: WiseTech signals more AI job losses are coming

WiseTech Global will cut more jobs as artificial intelligence takes over more of its work, chief executive Zubin Appoo has flagged, and he says the cuts will not stop when the current program ends.

“We can never say that we’re done,” Appoo said on Wednesday, hours after the embattled logistics software company posted an 11 per cent fall in annual profit and its shares dropped more than 7 per cent.

About 1200 of the 2000 roles announced in February have gone. Appoo said most of the rest would come from exiting large parts of the professional services arm of e2open, the US company WiseTech bought last year for $US3.2 billion, and shifting that work to partner firms.

An Australian technology company has stood behind cutting 1700 jobs in favour of artificial intelligence, as it raked in record annual revenue.

Logistics software provider WiseTech Global's total income surged 79 per cent to $US1.4 billion ($A19.5 billion) in the year to June 30, supported by its buyout of Texas-headquartered supply chain player e2open.

The acquisition helped deliver $64 million in annualised operating profit savings, while its artificial intelligence transformation had cut $34 million from the balance sheet, chief executive Zubin Appoo said.

A growing majority of Australians want house prices to fall, in some cases by more than 20 per cent, and contentious measures in the federal budget are winning more support among voters, a new poll has revealed.

Sixty-one per cent of people supported a decline in property prices, an exclusive Resolve Political Monitor Poll has found, with a majority of every age, political and income group agreeing that prices were too high.

Support for a drop increased by seven points on the 54 per cent recorded in June. Opposition eased to 9 per cent from 11 per cent, while the proportion who were undecided or neutral also slipped, from 35 per cent to 29 per cent.

Truck driver unaccounted for after explosive crash south of Sydney

All truck drivers have escaped with only minor injuries in what police have hailed as “nothing short of a miracle” following an explosive crash involving six semi-trailers which has shut down a major highway south of Sydney.

The Hume Highway has been closed in both directions near Gunning, west of Goulburn, following the collision, which sparked a massive blaze just after 5am.

Police and Fire and Rescue NSW initially reported that seven trucks were involved and one driver unaccounted for, but emergency crews confirmed just after midday that only six were involved.

Mr Murnane was a primary school teacher from 1960, before lecturing in English at Deakin University.

Since 1974 he has penned nine novels, three books of short stories, two essay collections, a poetry collection and a memoir.

Mr Murnane was La Trobe University’s writer in residence, Meanjin Literary Journal’s fiction consultant, a Victorian Ministry for the Arts literary advisory panel member, and Victorian Education Department publications officer and assistant editor.

Victorian courts lead the nation in the number of suppression orders handed down, with more than one order handed down every day in the state.

Suppression orders have been used in recent years to prevent the reporting of details in high profile cases, including the rape trial of Tom Silvagni.

Victorian judges and magistrates handed down the most gag orders in the nation and at one point were averaging more than one a day, according to new research which has found public interest journalism in the state has reached a "crisis point".

Police say 11 explosive devices found on Canberra streets

Police say 11 explosive devices have been found along a 1km stretch of footpaths in north-west Canberra over the last few days.

Some were already detonated prior to being found, and some have been detonated by police, but no one has been injured.

Members of the public are being urged to call Triple Zero (000) if they find an item resembling the devices, and to avoid touching it.

Police in Canberra say they have found 11 explosive devices lying next to footpaths in the city's north-west in the past two days.

Police warn of pipe bombs found in Belconnen

ACT Policing is warning the community of dangerous pipe bombs which have been located on public paths in Belconnen this week.

In the last two days, police responded to reports of several pipe bombs that were located within the vicinity of Lake Ginninderra between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive in Belconnen.

ACT Policing is urging anyone who locates a suspicious item within the area not to touch it and immediately contact police on Triple Zero (000).

Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour is urged to contact police on 131 444.

While there is no information or reports to suggest that these pipe bombs are currently in other parts of Canberra, police are urging any Canberrans to report suspicious items that match the description of a pipe bomb to police.

Nearly a dozen pipe bombs, some of them already detonated, have been found on footpaths and in parks in the nationâ€™s capital, sparking a major police investigation and warnings not to touch the potentially explosive items.

ACT police Det Acting Insp Anna Wronski could not say where the pipe bombs came from or who was behind them, but said the matter was being taken extremely seriously.

â€œWe do not want members of the public to pick them up. We do not want members of the public to bring them to police stations. We want them to call triple-zero immediately,â€ Wronski told reporters on Thursday.
