Robert MacIntyre admitted he wanted to "smash up my golf clubs" after letting a big lead slip to 2026 Masters partner Scottie Scheffler at the BMW Championship last August. MacIntyre had four shots over the world No.1 on the final day but hit consecutive bogeys and just one birdie, which allowed Scheffler to swoop in and claim victory.

The Scotsman was unsurprisingly blunt to the media after missing out on what would have been a third PGA Tour triumph. He also showcased his clear frustrations when asked what improvements were needed.

Scottie Scheffler wins American Express for 20th PGA Tour title

The world's No. 1 player loves coming to the California desert early in the season to take stock of his game and get into tournament shape. There wasn't much wrong Sunday in The American Express.

Scheffler made birdie on half of his holes, going from a two-shot deficit early to a lead that stretched to six shots late before he closed with a 6-under 66 for a four-shot victory.

"There's always a certain amount of rust when it comes to playing competitive golf," Scheffler said. "You can simulate as best you can at home, but you can only get into the heat of the moment when you're posting a score and you're in contention when you're at a tournament. So it's nice to see some of the stuff that I've been being practicing and working on has paid off."

One start, one win: Scottie Scheffler is back from his offseason, and he isn’t wasting time. The world No. 1 collected another trophy at The American Express on Sunday. He won by four shots.

At a venue where it is notoriously difficult to separate from the pack, Scheffler did just that. He reminded the tour that he is operating in another dimension. And considering it’s his first event of the year, he is only getting started. Again.

On Sunday, Scheffler came from one shot behind to shoot a final-round 6-under 66 and snag his 20th PGA Tour win. Just when you think you know what Scheffler is capable of, he shatters expectations and adds to a resume that continuously makes history — even after hitting a ball in the water on his penultimate hole.

As records stack up, could Scottie Scheffler be even better in 2026?

LA QUINTA, Calif. – In a tournament that so often delivers drama, the fact that the outright leader Scottie Scheffler dumped his tee shot in the water on the famous island par-3 17th on Sunday should have meant something.

Instead, the only material difference it made at The American Express was in the final margin. .css-vqpqpw{transition-property:var(–chakra-transition-property-common);transition-duration:var(–chakra-transition-duration-fast);transition-timing-function:var(–chakra-transition-easing-ease-out);cursor:pointer;outline:2px solid transparent;outline-offset:2px;color:#004c95;-webkit-text-decoration:underline!important;text-decoration:underline!important;-webkit-user-drag:none;}.css-vqpqpw:focus-visible,.css-vqpqpw[data-focus-visible]{box-shadow:var(–chakra-shadows-outline);}.css-vqpqpw:hover,.css-vqpqpw[data-hover]{color:#0084FF;}.css-vqpqpw:focus,.css-vqpqpw[data-focus]{border:1px solid #004c95;border-radius:0.4rem;}.css-vqpqpw:visited{color:#551A8B;}Scheffler won by four strokes at PGA WEST, shooting a gaudy 27-under over 72 holes to outpace his playing partners, Si Woo Kim and Blades Brown.
