    Satellite imagery captures race to recover 170-foot SpaceX Starship in the Indian Ocean

    Space exploration enthusiasts have been tracking the unprecedented journey of SpaceX’s latest Starship prototype, which wound up floating in the Indian Ocean after the company’s latest test flight. Now, satellites have captured mind-bending images of boats working to haul the rocket back to shore.

    The saga of Ship 40 — as this specific Starship prototype is called — began on July 24 with the launch of SpaceX’s 13th fully integrated test flight the rocket system, which includes the upper spacecraft, or “ship,” as well as the Super Heavy rocket booster, the bottommost part of the rocket that fires the ship off the launchpad and toward space.

    Team Update: Round 23 v Manly

    Craig Bellamy has updated his Melbourne Storm squad for Saturday's Indigenous Round game against Manly at HBF Park in Perth.

    Joe Chan comes into the starting team at centre replacing the unavailable Jack Howarth (shoulder), with Cameron Munster confirmed to make his return at five-eighth. 

    Gabriel Satrick is named on the extended reserves, alongside Manaia Waitere.

    Saturday’s game kicks-off at 1pm (AWST), 3pm (AEST) with tickets available here.

    The game is supported by Tourism Western Australia, Venues West and Perth Bears.

    Neil the seal swims out to sea leaving joy in his wake

    Videos of Neil the seal have brought joy and laughter to millions of people around the world.

    Experts say there's a reason so many of us have fallen in love with this special seal.

    Authorities say it appears Neil has returned to the sea but he'll keep coming back.

    The 1,000-kilogram marine mammal has spent the past few weeks at Seven Mile Beach, near Hobart, in southern Tasmania.

    His bollard-bashing, fence-crushing, traffic cone-chewing antics have turned him into an internet sensation.

    "Neil the seal is a global treasure," one fan posted on Instagram.

    Is Neil the seal lonely and poorly brought up or just a hooligan?

    Like many adolescents with an outsized social media presence and a distinct lack of constructive peer support, Neil the seal is exhibiting performative behaviour that is causing serious concern to those charged with his care and supervision.

    Neil is the five-year-old elephant seal born in southern Tasmania who still hauls himself ashore at or near his birthplace twice a year – once in October to moult, and once mid-year during mating season.

    In his early visits ashore as a playful pup of just half a ton or so, Neil spent time wrestling traffic cones or sprawling out across driveways or pavements, attracting a substantial global audience to social media posts about his shore visits.

    Neil the seal is more than a viral animal. He’s become a global folk hero

    I am one of Hobart’s many residents who travelled to a nearby beach to witness Neil the seal – an animal that has been receiving global attention for his wild personality and humorous antics.

    Neil’s latest arrival in Tasmania was in late June. Due to his celebrity status, a security detail from the local council had been tasked with limiting all pedestrian access to the animal.

    On my visit yesterday evening, people peered from a distance at the sleeping giant. A constant stream of cars was permitted to travel on the road, slowly, as though on an impromptu safari.

    Stephen Crichton appears to have shrugged off the shoulder issue which forced him to withdraw from the NSW State of Origin squad after the Canterbury captain was named to line up for the Bulldogs. 

    Crichton was originally picked in Laurie Daley's NSW side for Wednesday's game two clash at the MCG, only to be removed from the Blues squad 12 hours later as a result of a lingering AC joint complaint.

    Massive twist as NSW superstar 'quietly dropped' for State of Origin 2

    Former NRL player Justin Horo believes Stephen Crichton was actually ‘dropped’ by NSW coach Laurie Daley for State of Origin 2 after he was named to play for the Bulldogs this weekend. Crichton was originally named in the Blues’ squad for Origin 2, but withdrew just hours later.

    The Bulldogs captain has been battling a shoulder injury for weeks, and reportedly aggravated it against Parramatta. The superstar centre has reportedly only been training once a week with the Bulldogs, and Daley said he wouldn’t have been able to do any of the contact sessions in NSW camp.

    But eyebrows were raised on Tuesday afternoon when Crichton was named for the Bulldogs’ clash with Manly on Saturday night. Many were left questioning why Crichton isn’t playing on Wednesday night but is right to go for Saturday.

    Antarctic sea ice defied global warming for decades – now, hidden ocean heat is breaking through

    For decades, Antarctica seemed to defy global warming. Since satellites began monitoring the poles in the late 1970s, the seasonal growth and retreat of Antarctic sea ice – frozen seawater that expands around the continent each winter – appeared remarkably resilient. It was often described as the “heartbeat of the planet”.

    Unlike the Arctic, where sea ice declined rapidly as the planet warmed, Antarctic sea ice showed little overall loss. It even expanded between 2007 and 2015. But that resilience has now broken.

    Since 2015, Antarctic sea ice has declined sharply. In 2023, winter sea ice extent fell to record lows — so far below the long-term average that scientists considered it an event with roughly a one-in-3.5-million probability of occurring by chance.

    A ‘triple whammy’ of chaos has triggered a downward spiral in Antarctica, scientists discover

    For decades, it seemed Antarctica might be insulated from the kind of rapid ice melting unfolding in the Arctic. But in 2015, that changed when the sea ice fringing this vast, icy continent stopped expanding and began to decline dramatically. Now, scientists say they have figured out why this happened — and their findings spell deep trouble for a region whose fate affects us all.

    Antarctic sea ice has been on a steep downward trend for nearly a decade. It reached a record low in 2022 and again in 2023, when it dropped to just 691,000 square miles, equivalent to an area of missing ice larger than Greenland compared to average levels. This year saw a higher amount of sea ice at the height of the Southern Hemispher summer, but it was still at its 16th lowest level in nearly five decades of record keeping.

    Antarctica is being ravaged by a triple-whammy of climate chaos that has melted sea ice to record lows, a new study has revealed. For decades, the frozen wilderness at the bottom of the world defied global warming trends, with ice levels actually growing—until 2015 when it suddenly reversed.

    The study led by the University of Southampton shows that a series of compounding events flipped the Southern Ocean—which surrounds Antarctica—out of balance, dragging unusually warm, salty water from the deep up to the surface.

    Team Update: NRL Round 10 vs Broncos

    Manly Warringah Sea Eagles squad has been trimmed to 20 players ahead of Saturday night's Round 10 match against the Brisbane Broncos at 4 Pines Park, Brookvale.

    Dropping out of the squad in the 24-hour update are Jamal Fogarty and Simione Laiafi.

    Fogarty has again been ruled out following a minor groin strain which he sustained in Manly's ANZAC Round win against the Eels. As he did last weekend, Walsh will slot straight into the halfback role.

    Jackson Shereb is in line to make his NRL debut. If used off the interchange on Saturday he will become Sea Eagle #671.

    Zach Dockar-Clay is also a chance of making his first NRL appearance for Manly after being elevated from the reserves to the six-player interchange.

    NRL community throws their support behind hospitalised Sea Eagles legend

    The NRL community has thrown its support behind Manly Sea Eagles legend, who was hospitalised this week after suffering seizures.

    One of the Sea Eagles' greatest fullbacks, who played 237 games in maroon and white, picking up four titles on the Northern Beaches.

    Eadie also represented NSW on 14 occasions in State of Origin and 20 Test honours for the Australian Kangaroos. 
    Former speedster and friend of Eadie, Larry Corowa, told the Daily Telegraph an update on the situation and relayed the continued support he has been receiving since the incident. 
    “Graham has had his health issues over the last couple of years, and we – all the boys – are right behind him,” Corowa said.

    Lloyds Banking Group to close another 95 branches

    Another 95 branches will be closed by Lloyds Banking Group, as many banks continue to reduce their presence on the High Street.

    The group said 53 Lloyds, 31 Halifax and 11 Bank of Scotland sites would shut, external between May this year and March 2027.

    Lloyds, the biggest banking group in the UK, said it offered a range of options for people to manage their money.

    The latest announcement is in addition an ongoing closure programme by the bank which will see 49 sites shut by October.

    Lloyds will have 610 branches remaining once all the announced closures are complete.

    A spokesperson for Lloyds said: "Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before."
