California threatens lawsuit over federal offshore wind lease buyouts

NORTHSTATE, Calif. — California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the California Energy Commission are threatening legal action against the U.S. Department of the Interior over what they call an unlawful effort to halt offshore wind energy development off the state's coast.

On Thursday, July 16, Bonta and California Energy Commission Chair David Hochschild sent a Notice of Intent to Sue the Department of the Interior and energy developer Invenergy. The notice challenges a June agreement in which the federal government agreed to pay an Invenergy subsidiary more than $111 million to give up its offshore wind lease in the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area.

Cybersecurity agencies in Australia, the US, Canada, the UK and New Zealand have issued a joint warning on the cyber threat posed by artificial intelligence.

They are jointly urging governments and businesses to act faster to dramatically improve cybersecurity, including using AI tools to improve their defences.

Companies like Anthropic have provided powerful AI tools to a small number of Australian government agencies and businesses to help improve defences.

Cybersecurity agencies have sounded a warning to government and corporate leaders that the cyber risk posed by artificial intelligence (AI) demands urgent action.

Australian businesses and government agencies could face a dramatic escalation in AI-powered cyber threats within months, according to a warning from the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which said frontier models were rapidly reshaping the capabilities of hostile actors.

In a rare statement published overnight, the spy agencies from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US warned that AI had accelerated the speed, scale and sophistication of cyber threats.

‘Act now’: Cyber spy chiefs issue warning on AI threat

The heads of the Five Eyes cybersecurity agencies have issued a rare joint statement warning that artificial intelligence is reshaping cyber risk in months rather than years, and have urged business and government leaders to act immediately.

Released on Monday night, the statement brings together cybersecurity chiefs from the Five Eyes allies – Australia, the United States, Britain, Canada and New Zealand. It says frontier AI models are expected to exceed industry expectations and will transform both attack and defence, and that the gap between a vulnerability being found and exploited is closing fast.

“The urgency is clear. AI is not a future consideration – it is already here,” the statement says. “It lowers barriers for malicious actors and increases the speed and complexity of attacks … At the same time, AI offers powerful tools to strengthen defence.”

Google is suing a major Chinese cybercrime operation, which it said facilitated scams targeting hundreds of thousands of victims, causing losses estimated in the millions.

Chinese cybercrime operation that used AI to scam 'hundreds of thousands of victims' sued by Google

Google is suing to dismantle the infrastructure behind an alleged massive AI-powered cybercrime operation.

On Friday, the tech giant announced a lawsuit against an alleged Chinese cybercrime network called Outsider Enterprise, which Google says uses AI in its campaigns to send scam text messages impersonating Google and other brands to steal passwords and credit card numbers.

Outsider Enterprise has financially scammed “hundreds of thousands of victims” with losses “estimated in the millions.” The group deployed 9,000 fake websites, one million fraudulent web domains, and 2.5 million texts sent to Android users in a two-week period, according to Google.

The company said, “55,000 spam texts were flagged by Android users in just two weeks this past May — that’s more than two text spam complaints a minute.”

The ABC has confirmed an email was sent to the organisers of a local Shen Yun Chinese dance group falsely claiming that explosives had been placed around the property.

There is no evidence the Chinese embassy or Chinese government was behind the evacuation.

The prime minister was forced to evacuate the Lodge last night due to a bomb threat linked to performances in Australia by a classical Chinese dance and music group that is banned in China.

Bondi gunman Naveed Akram has been denied a visit from family members after a search of their car found a fruit knife and a handwritten note.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed Corrective Services stopped the family of the 24-year-old prisoner outside the super-max jail in Goulburn on Saturday.

“A search was conducted with the vehicle and found what has been described as a fruit knife and other pieces of writing,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
