    ‘Seeking connection’: the video game where players stopped shooting and started talking

    In a post-apocalyptic landscape of cutthroat scavengers, surprisingly peaceful players are opting to team up and open up – a phenomenon that’s intriguing game developers and psychologists alike

    The video game Arc Raiders is set in a lethal imagining of an apocalyptic future for humanity. Survivors have been forced to live deep underground in colonies while mysterious, murderous AI machines patrol the surface. Only the desolate ruins of former cities survive, and reckless human “raiders” take trips topside to conduct dangerous scavenging missions.

    For all the menace of these armed robots, called Arcs, the deadly droids are not the biggest threat in this hugely popular game, which was released late last year and has sold more than 14m copies. Raiders operate with the constant anxiety that another person will shoot them on sight and steal their loot. Mercilessness is rewarded in this kind of competitive, high-stakes world.

    US says Iran seeking 'exit ramp' despite mixed ceasefire signals

    The White House insists talks to end the war with Iran are continuing, despite conflicting reports over Iran's response to a US ceasefire proposal.

    Speaking at the White House, press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the US was "very close" to meeting its "core objectives" and that Tehran was seeking an "exit ramp".

    The comments come amid a series of conflicting reports about Iran's response to a 15-point ceasefire proposal sent by the Trump administration earlier this week to Iran via Pakistani intermediaries.

    'No intention of negotiating for now,' says Iranian minister, as US insists war goals almost met

    The US is "very close" to meeting its objectives in Iran, the White House says, adding that Iran's regime is looking for an "exit ramp"

    But Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the country will keep "defending" itself. There is "no intention of negotiating for now," he tells state media

    Araghchi says "friendly countries" may have conveyed messages between the US and Iran, but this does not amount to "dialogue" – the White House has suggested talks are ongoing

    Washington | Iran is seeking commitments from US President Donald Trump on five demands before it agrees to end the war, as the White House insisted its peace talks to end the conflict have been productive.

    Underlining the early, delicate nature of the talks and the continued sabre-rattling on both sides, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) Iran was looking for “an exit ramp” to a war that has upended markets and supply chains around the world and wreaked havoc across the Middle East.

    XRP-associated Ripple seeking VASP license in Brazil

    Ripple, the payments-focused blockchain company closely associated with the XRP Ledger (XRP) network, is expanding its digital asset services in Brazil while preparing to apply for a license with the country’s central bank, a move that would place it under the nation’s new crypto framework.

    The company said Tuesday it is rolling out a broader set of services that bundle cross-border payments, digital asset custody, brokerage and treasury tools. It said the combined offering targets banks and fintechs that want to move money across borders, hold crypto and manage liquidity in one system.

    It said it also plans to apply for a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license with the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB), in line with the country's crypto regulation.

    Ripple-linked coin XRP jumped Binance's BNB to become the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market cap amid news the financial services firm is expanding its payments offerings in Brazil and plans to seek a local license.

    XRP is even in the last 24 hours and up 8.5% in the last week, recently changing hands at $1.51. Late Monday, the coin hit a price of $1.60—its highest trading price in the last month.

    On the other hand, BNB is down 1.1% over the last 24 hours to a recent price of $668, and has only gained around 2.7% in the last week of trading, allowing XRP to leapfrog it in terms of market cap.

    XRP jumps back to 4th-largest crypto by market cap

    XRP reclaimed the spot of the world's fourth-largest cryptocurrency as its market capitalization climbed from $90.5 billion to $92.5 billion over the last 24 hours.

    In contrast, BNB's market cap dropped from $92.6 billion to $90.8 billion over the last 24 hours as XRP took over it.

    XRP's price has risen 2% over the last 24 hours—the highest climb among the top 13 cryptocurrencies.

    Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether's USDT still remain the top three cryptocurrencies with market caps of $1.47 trillion, $279.8 billion, and $184 billion.

    Kyrgios says he will not be seeking an Aus Open wildcard

    Nick Kyrgios has conceded he is not up to playing singles at the Australian Open, ruling himself out of a likely wildcard.

    The local crowd-puller was tipped to receive one of the three remaining wildcards from Tennis Australia.

    But he announced on social media on Friday he would only play doubles with great mate Thanasi Kokkinakis at Melbourne Park, with the tournament getting underway on January 18.

    Multiple wrist and knee surgeries have limited Kyrgios to just seven singles tour matches over the past three years, with his ranking plummeting to 670.

    Australian Open boss Craig Tiley has backed Nick Kyrgios’ decision not to play singles at this year’s event, revealing he had not given the Wimbledon finalist any guarantee of a wildcard.
