Super switching sees billions flow out of traditional funds and at a risk

For many Australians, superannuation doesn't occupy their routine thoughts until they hit their 40s.

By that time, people who have been working for most of their lives may have built up hundreds of thousands of dollars in super, and start to think more closely about whether the amount they have accumulated will help support a comfortable lifestyle in retirement.

For much of the past decade, retail funds have been the biggest winners in attracting billions of Australians' super.

But in recent years, there's been a shift of retirement savings out of the major players into self-managed super funds (SMSFs).

ASIC warns savers at risk as big wealth platforms leave $300b exposed

The corporate regulator says major wealth management platforms have overly permissive compliance regimes, leaving customers exposed to the same dodgy schemes and shonky practices that led to thousands losing their savings when the $1 billion Shield and First Guardian schemes failed.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission analysis – its first of the fast-growing sector since 2024 – bluntly concluded platform operators were “not doing enough to protect members” and, in some cases, found they had even regressed on crucial consumer safeguards over the past two years.

‘Deeply concerning’: ASIC warns on gaps in oversight of $300b in super

Businesses that oversee $300 billion in superannuation savings invested via wealth platforms are not doing enough to monitor for potentially excessive financial advice fees being deducted from members’ accounts, the corporate watchdog warns.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will on Monday say it was “overwhelmingly disappointed” after it conducted a review into how well super trustees in the platforms segment are safeguarding members’ retirement savings.

Platforms, which have surged in popularity, allow members to have greater control over their super investments than traditional funds. They are technology systems that allow investors and financial advisers to manage money spread across multiple investment options.

Indian communities across New Zealand say they are feeling "hounded" after a surge in racist incidents.

Graffiti targeting Indians has cropped up across Auckland, with racist and violent calls spray painted at three public spaces last month.

After New Zealand signed a free trade agreement with India last month, New Zealand First deputy leader Shane Jones, whose party opposes the agreement, said he would not agree with a "butter chicken tsunami".

Japan welcomes New Zealand interest in Upgraded Mogami-class Frigate

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, on May 11, welcomed New Zealand’s decision to consider the upgraded Mogami-class frigate as a candidate for the Royal New Zealand Navy’s future frigate programme, calling it beneficial for strengthening deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.

Speaking at a press conference, Kihara said a potential New Zealand acquisition of the “Upgraded Mogami,” known in Japan as 06FFM or New FFM, could significantly improve interoperability among the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), and the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN).

Kihara, who previously served as Japan’s defence minister from 2023 to 2024, said:

Arteta sees Arsenal among Europe's elite, but must prove it

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Mikel Arteta said he believes Arsenal belong at Europe's top table, but urged his team to prove their Champions League credentials against Bayer Leverkusen.

Arteta has overseen the Gunners' first knockout stage win in 14 years and their first semifinal appearance in 16 years over the past two seasons.

Arsenal won all eight of their league phase matches and are favourites to progress to the latter stages once more with Leverkusen, Bundesliga champions in 2023-24, currently in sixth place in the table.

Asked if Arsenal had established themselves alongside Europe's best, Arteta said: "I believe so. This is football and you have to show it tomorrow night.

Competitive balance across Europe’s leagues would be transformed with the adoption of a new model for distributing revenue from the Champions League and other Uefa club competitions, according to a proposal by the Union of European Clubs (UEC).

Clubs competing in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League benefit this season from a bumper €3.317bn (£2.87bn) prize pot, culled from annual €4.4bn revenue primarily generated by media rights sales. Only €308m of the latter figure is divided among clubs who did not reach those competitions, in the form of solidarity payments.

Todd Woodbridge sees a path to unthinkable victory as Demon flips tired narrative that big guns have too many weapons for him

Alex de Minaur's mentality was decidedly murky as recently as October, when injury forced him out of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Hong Kong.

In an ominous interview, Australia's No.1 said he was battling "a lot of pain" and was set for scans to determine the path forward.

A glass ceiling has always hung above Alex de Minaur’s tennis career – but not of his doing.

There is an obsession with listing everything that de Minaur is not, and what he supposedly never will be. The problem for those repeatedly doing so, even as he continues to smash through, is that the man known as “Demon” takes great joy in proving his many critics wrong.
