‘Seinfeld’ Actor Jason Alexander Apologizes to Courtney Stodden for “Inappropriate” Sketch Filmed When She Was Underage

In a follow-up statement shared with THR after Alexander's apology was reported, Stodden said, “I appreciate Jason Alexander’s public apology. People keep asking if he’s apologized privately, and he hasn’t. A private apology would be meaningful, but meaningful action would be even more powerful.”

Jason Alexander has issued an apology to Courtney Stodden for an inappropriate 2012 Funny or Die sketch, in which the Seinfeld actor rubbed a cellphone on Stodden’s breasts when she was a mere 17.

“Looking back at the comedy sketch in which Ms. Stodden and I participated in 2012, I completely agree that it was inappropriate and I truly regret it,” Alexander said in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “But more importantly, I am deeply sorry for any harm or distress it has caused Ms. Stodden. I offer her my sincerest apologies.”

Seinfeld star Jason Alexander has apologised for his role in an “inappropriate” comedy sketch with a then-17-year-old Courtney Stodden.

Courtney Stodden Slams Jason Alexander for Doing Adult Skit With Her

Courtney Stodden revisited the trauma of her teenage years as a child bride, recalling actor Jason Alexander's inappropriate behavior during a comedy skit when she was still a minor.

"I was 17 years old in this photo. The older I get, the more impossible this is to understand," Stodden, 31, captioned a still image alongside Alexander, 66, from the 2012 Funny or Die sketch "The Donny Clay Show."

Stodden was referencing a sketch in which the Seinfeld actor played a sleazy talk show host interviewing her and her then-51-year-old husband, actor Doug Hutchison.

"During this comedy sketch, Jason Alexander repeatedly r——- his phone across my b—– while saying there was 'no signal' in my head but 'plenty of signal' in my c—-," she wrote in the caption. "Later in the sketch, he joked that when I turned 18 he’d like to t— me behind the couch and 'have his w–' with me."

Child marriage is currently legal in 34 states across America, and 4 of those states do not require any minimum age for marriage, with a parental or judicial waiver. Three years ago, California rejected a bill that would have banned child marriage. Campaigners are pushing for the implementation of AB 1267, a bill that would ban all child marriages in the state, requiring a minimum age of 18. One of the campaigners leading the charge is Courtney Stodden, someone who, unfortunately, knows all about being married off as a teen.

At the age of 16, Stodden was married to Doug Hutchison, an actor who was, at the time, 51 years old. Rather than be terrified for the fate of an adolescent who seemed to be an obvious victim of , pop culture and the media mocked Stodden. They smeared Stodden as a slut, an attention seeker, and the conniving schemer who somehow tricked poor 51-year-old Doug into marrying her. Even by the low standards of 2010s media failings we all regret, this one was ghoulish (I wrote about it here!) Stodden is now 31, married to someone who isn't a loser pervert, and they're speaking out over the nightmare of that marriage. When the divorce was announced in 2020, they said that they felt "absolutely taken advantage of" and "groomed" by Hutchison. And they want everyone to know just how humiliating it was to be objectified and mocked as a literal child bride.

It feels like a scene straight out of Seinfeld, the way Dan O’Keefe explains his Festivus “outing.” The moment in 1997 when the esoteric holiday left the closed confines of the television writer’s memories of an atypical adolescence and slipped into the world via Hollywood producers took place as he was cornered in a booth with his colleagues prodding him to spill the beans. Over the next several decades, Festivus would morph and expand into today’s top alternative to Christmas. But in that moment, as Seinfeld’s four principal protagonists were often positioned, O’Keefe was seated with these successful writers and producers at a popular L.A. diner — though here, Swingers on Beverly Boulevard stood in for Tom’s Diner, the Upper West Side eatery the great sitcom put on the map.
