Mitch McConnell returns to Senate after months-long absence

The 84-year-old said he was prepared to cast his first vote after rampant speculation about his health

Mitch McConnell, the former Republican Senate majority leader, returned to the Capitol on Monday and cast his first vote after a months‑long absence that fueled rampant speculation about his health.

The 84-year-old senator has been away from the Senate since mid-June, following what his office said was a fall that left him hospitalized. He was discharged from a rehabilitation center last month.

“Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June,” McConnell said in a statement. “I’m really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., will return to the Senate to cast his first vote following months of speculation on his condition and when the longtime lawmaker would reemerge into the public eye. McConnell said in a statement on Monday, the first day back for the Senate taking over a month long break, that he would "cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June."

US Senate passes Russia sanctions bill championed by Lindsey Graham

Late senator spent final days of his life working to advance bill that will now head to the House after 86-11 Senate vote

By a large, bipartisan margin, the US Senate on Friday approved a bill intended to punish Russia and countries that buy its petroleum exports over the invasion of Ukraine, capping a legislative push that was spurred by the death of its champion, the Republican senator Lindsey Graham.

The measure, renamed the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia Act in honor of the late senator’s work on the issue, was approved by an 86-11 vote. Rand Paul of Kentucky was the sole Republican to oppose the legislation, together with 10 Democrats.

US Senate passes sweeping Russian energy sanctions bill amid Ukraine war

Legislation implements aggressive economic sanctions, including 100 percent tariff on Russian oil and gas importers.

The United States Senate has passed an aggressive sanctions package targeting Russia’s energy revenues amid its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The legislation passed on Friday, dubbed the “Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026”, sets up to 100 percent tariffs on major nations importing Russian oil and gas. The measure, if passed, was expected to affect at least five top importers of Russian fuel, including China and India.

The bill further targets clandestine maritime networks used to evade Western embargoes.

The Senate voted 86–11 to pass the bill, which now heads to the House of Representatives. A vote in the 435-seat lower chamber will not take place until at least early September due to the congressional summer recess.

Michigan Senate Primary Election 2026 Live Results: Stevens, El-Sayed, Rogers and More

With former Rep. Mike Rogers unopposed in the Republican primary, all attention has been on a bruising Democratic primary battle between physician Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens. Stevens has rallied the Washington and Michigan Democratic establishments to her side, while El-Sayed has captured energy and attention from progressive luminaries. The winner will face a sprint to the general election while trying to repair any damage from the long, hard-fought primary.

From my new weekly newsletter, the Data Dive, here's what I'm watching for tonight in Michigan. Hope you'll read and subscribe, and tune in for live results beginning at 7:45 p.m. tonight.

US politics: Can a left-wing Muslim win the midwest? Or are Democrats about to make a big mistake

Ypsilanti, Michigan: Abdul El-Sayed takes the microphone, and the 100-or-so-strong crowd rises to their feet in applause. He leads them in a call-and-response of his election slogans. “Money out of …?” he yells. “Politics,” they respond. “Money in your …? Pocket. Medicare for …? All.”

It is not a glamorous setting. We are in a basement at the Michigan Firehouse Museum in Ypsilanti, a small city between Detroit and Ann Arbor. Surrounding us is a collection of old-school firefighting vehicles and a 1913 Ford Model T repainted to look like one.

These are the unassuming rooms in which future leaders are made. In El-Sayed’s case, possibly an important leader. A doctor, unionist and Muslim, he is vying to become the Democratic candidate for the US Senate here in Michigan, a swing state that will decide the outcome of the midterms.

Fact-checking Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens' claims ahead of the Michigan Democratic Senate primary

Michigan Democrats will pick their nominee for the U.S. Senate on Aug. 4 in a battle dominated by views on U.S.-Israel relations and the Democratic Party's future.

The race between Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens has exposed intra-party rifts about whether Democrats should move further to the left in a battleground state Donald Trump won in 2016 and 2024. Criticizing U.S. aid to Israel, as El-Sayed has done, has become increasingly common in the Democratic base, and, in July, nearly half of House Democrats voted to cut off aid. (The vote failed because of Republican opposition.)

National Primary Elections 2026: Live Results and Map

The first big election night of the year is here, with voters heading to the polls in Texas, North Carolina and Arkansas on March 3. Marquee matchups, particularly in Texas, will shape the fight for control of the House and Senate. Republicans in Congress hope to maintain and expand their narrow majorities in the fall for the second half of President Donald Trump’s term, while Democrats will aim to win over voters frustrated with Trump on the economy and other issues.

Democrats need a net gain of four seats in order to win control of the Senate in 2026. That means the party has to defend every seat it currently holds, and flip four more on highly competitive and even outright Republican terrain.
