Judge denies teen killer’s request for a hug as he hands down life sentence

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Court TV) — A judge showed no mercy to a tearful teenager convicted of killing a 15-year-old girl, sentencing him to spend the rest of his life behind bars — plus 45 years.

Thomas Stein, 18, was convicted of felony murder with a firearm and three counts of attempted murder in the death of Kayla Rincon-Miller, who was shot to death on March 17, 2024. Rincon-Miller had been out at the movies with two friends when they were randomly targeted by Stein and his friend, Christopher Horne.

At his trial, Stein took the stand and conceded that he had been present at the time of Rincon-Miller’s death, but claimed that others in the car had pulled the trigger and that he never had any intention of hurting anyone. Stein testified at his sentencing on Friday, maintaining his plan that night had only been to steal from cars. “I didn’t know that robbery was going to occur, but it was my reaction in fleeing that ultimately played a major role in assisting the perpetrators,” Stein said Friday. “I know that it wasn’t my intentions, but the truth is it doesn’t change the result. It doesn’t change the fact that there was a life taken and innocent people were forever traumatized because of that. That day I made a terrible decision. The decision to get behind the wheel was a total act of selfishness and something I regret and I’m ashamed of every day.”

Brendan Banfield sentenced to life in prison for murders of wife, stranger amid affair with his family’s au pair

Brendan Banfield, the Virginia man convicted of killing his wife and a stranger as part of an elaborate plot with the family’s au pair, was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole after facing his victims’ loved ones in court.

“The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse – it reflects evil, which is why I carry no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to life,” Judge Penney S. Azcarate said as she handed down the sentence.

Banfield and the au pair – who were having an affair – lured Joseph Ryan into the family’s home in February 2023 under the pretense of a sexual encounter to frame him for the killing of Banfield’s wife, Christine, prosecutors argued.

Brendan Banfield sentenced to life in prison in ‘au pair affair’ murders

LOCAL ALERT: Boil water advisory issued for upper Northwest DC neighborhoods as precaution

A judge in Fairfax County, Virginia, has sentenced Brendan Banfield to life in prison with no chance of parole in the 2023 “au pair affair” murders of his wife and another man.

Prosecutors said Banfield was romantically involved with the family’s au pair and the two plotted to murder Christine Banfield and blame her death on a stranger, Joseph Ryan, who they lured to the family’s home.

“One would hope that some day you will become tortured by what you have done to Christine, Joe, Christine’s daughter, and their families, but nothing I have seen suggests that you will,” said Fairfax County Circuit Court Chief Judge Penney Azcarate. “The level of cruelty, calculation, and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse. It reflects evil, which is why I carry no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to life.”

Imran Khan and wife sentenced for state gift fraud

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to further jail terms following a fraud case involving state gifts.

They were convicted of breaking Pakistan's rules on gifts after Bibi was given a luxury jewellery set by Saudi Arabia's Mohammed bin Salman during a 2021 state visit.

The pair are already serving time in prison for earlier convictions, and the new sentences – 10 years for criminal breach of trust and seven years for criminal misconduct, and a fine – will reportedly run concurrently to their earlier terms.

Khan has described the charges as politically motivated and his lawyer told BBC News his team plan to challenge the verdict.

A Pakistani court has convicted and sentenced imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife to 17 years in prison.

They were found guilty of retaining and selling state gifts, according to officials and his party.

Following the verdict, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party announced plans for protests across the state of Punjab on Sunday.

Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 17 years' prison each in a corruption case.

The case relates to luxury watches gifted to Khan by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during official visits, which prosecutors said Khan and his wife then purchased from the state at a heavily discounted price in violation of Pakistan's gift rules.

Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan, wife sentenced to 17 years in corruption case

Khan and his wife have denied accusations that they misrepresented the value of state gifts, including jewellery, and profited from them.

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 17 years in prison after a Pakistani court found them guilty of illegally retaining and selling valuable state gifts.

The sentence, handed down on Saturday, capped a years-long saga that saw the duo accused of selling various gifts – including jewellery from the Saudi Arabian government – at far below market value. They have denied all charges.

In order to keep gifts from foreign dignitaries, Pakistani law requires officials to purchase them at market value and to declare profits from any sales.
