The Handmaid's Tale's sequel arrives with similarly eerie timing

In the halls of Aunt Lydia's premarital preparatory academy, young teens Agnes and Daisy will form a bond that will up-end their past, present and future.

That's the premise of the new television series The Testaments, based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name, a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale.

While The Handmaid's Tale was about the totalitarian regime of Gilead, which stripped women of their rights during a global fertility crisis, the sequel focuses on the young women being groomed for marriage in Gilead at the elite preparatory school.

The Testaments review – brace yourself for a bloody sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale

Don’t be fooled by the lighter tone of Margaret Atwood’s follow-on. June’s daughter is now grown up in Gilead, where daily horrors are still in full swing – and Aunt Lydia is back

I had to give up on the TV adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale quite early on – the mass mock execution scene did for me – because it was too relentlessly bleak, too full of dread, too awful, too true. Margaret Atwood’s future-dystopia tale, published in 1985, drew on nothing that had not already occurred in totalitarian and tyrannical regimes around the world. Translated to the screen, the visceral terror of it all was almost too much from the very beginning.

The trouble with Agnes MacKenzie narrating a TV series about the political antipathy that begets authoritarianism is that she has nothing to say on the matter. It’s not her fault. She’s scarcely older than Gilead, the country that has restricted her formal education to embroidery and the Old Testament. Even on the narrow subject of Agnes MacKenzie herself, Agnes confesses that she’s no expert. She doesn’t know her own age or what her new period is doing to her body. She doesn’t know the identity of her own mother.

They’re making a sequel to ‘The Family Stone’

Christmas is coming early for those who love spending the holidays with the Stone family.

Thomas Bezucha, the writer-director behind the 2005 perennial yuletide favorite “The Family Stone,” is working on a sequel to the movie, he tells CNN.

Bezucha shared the news during an interview about working with the late Diane Keaton, who played matriarch Sybil Stone in the original movie.

The filmmaker said that he had been thinking about and working on the script for a followup to “The Family Stone” – which follows Sybil’s family at Christmas as they grapple with the news that she is terminally ill – when he learned of Keaton’s untimely death last month at the age of 79.

Thomas Bezucha, who wrote and directed the 2005 dramedy “The Family Stone,” is working on a sequel to the contemporary holiday classic. He told CNN that he had already been thinking about revisiting the fictional kin before the death of Diane Keaton, who died in October at the age of 79. Keaton’s character, the Stone family’s matriarch Sybil, dies after a terminal illness at the end of the original film.

“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha said during a CNN interview. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”

A Sequel to The Family Stone Without Diane Keaton? I’m Already Crying…But I’m Also Seated

I don’t have many Christmas or Hanukkah traditions (beyond getting manically into holiday decor, melting a candy cane into my coffee while I wrap presents, and listening to Kacey Musgraves’s A Very Kacey Christmas album, that is), but one favorite activity involves going over to my best friend’s house for our annual Yuletide sleepover, changing into my plaid flannel Lanz nightgown, and firing up The Family Stone. Even though we rewatch the Thomas Bezucha-directed film quite literally every year, it somehow never gets old—so you can imagine my delight when I learned that we could soon be getting a sequel.
