The Bureau of Meteorology said severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and possible large hail continue to develop.

"An upper-level trough combines with a trough of low pressure at the surface over the southern half of the state to produce slow moving thunderstorms today," the bureau's warning said on Saturday evening, March 21.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a tropical low in the Coral Sea east-north-east of Cairns will bring severe weather to the mainland from today.

A cyclone watch from Cooktown to Palm Island has been cancelled with the weather bureau calling the tropical low off Queensland "disorganised".

A severe weather warning has been issued for the far north Queensland Peninsula, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands due to heavy rain.

North Queensland is bracing for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding as disorganised tropical low 29U approaches the mainland.

Rain could fall in Brisbane through the weekend and beyond, as a possible cyclone approaches the state’s north.

Showers are predicted in the south-east until Tuesday, with severe storms possible.

Daniel Hayes from the Bureau of Meteorology said the weather system off the coast near Cooktown might drive moisture towards Brisbane in coming days.

“We do start to see the increase in tropical moisture from later tomorrow and particularly over the weekend,” he said.

He said Sunday could be the wettest day, with an upper-level trough moving across the region.
