Shock AFL club crowned biggest in the country

The Sydney Swans have been crowned the biggest club supporter-wise in 2026 despite the recent police investigation and Pullman Hotel incident.

According to independent market research and public opinion polling company Roy Morgan, Sydney tops the AFL ladder in terms of supporter base with 1,131,000 fans.

That's 60,000 more than the next-best two-time reigning premier Brisbane who has 1,065,000 fans.

Sydney's support has dropped considerably in 2026, with the Swans down 12.8 per cent (166,000) on 2025's number.

Victorian giant Collingwood sits in third with 920,000 fans, while Adelaide makes up the top four with 756,000.

The fact that Sydney sits above the likes of Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton, Richmond and West Coast might come as a surprise to football fans.

Consumer confidence lifts from latest record low

ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence increased 2 points to 73.9 in mid-September, which is 12 points below the same time last year, but 1.5 points above the 2026 weekly average of 72.4.

According to ANZ and Roy Morgan, the index was driven higher this week amid increasing confidence about people’s personal finances, especially when compared to a year ago. 

Now 17 per cent (up 3ppts) of Australians say their families are ‘better off’ financially than this time last year, compared to 51 per cent (down 3ppts) that say their families are ‘worse off’.

Views on personal finances over the next year were slightly stronger this week, with 23 per cent (up 1ppt) of respondents expecting their family will be ‘better off’ financially this time next year, while 40 per cent (down 1ppt) expect to be ‘worse off’.

Latest ANZ-Roy Morgan data shows only a modest lift as economists warn further rate rises ahead

Australian consumer confidence rose a handful of points last week, but remained well below the neutral 100 level that separates optimism from pessimism, according to the latest ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence report.

The two-point uptick to 73.9 followed a fall the previous week and left the measure roughly in line with where it has sat for most of 2026. With an average reading of 108.5 over the past 26 years, it is clear that the Australian public remains in a deep trough.

Consumers remain highly sceptical of a recovery in their day-to-day living costs, with combined survey respondents expecting inflation to hit 6.1% (on a four-week moving average).
