Sydney rivals added to list of clubs circling Liam Martin

The Penrith Panthers chances of retaining Liam Martin beyond the end of his current contract have taken another hit, with the Sydney Roosters understood to be interested in acquiring his services.

The second-rower, who can also play in the middle and has been a permanent fixture in the New South Wales State of Origin side in recent years if off-contract at the end of 2027, and able to negotiate his future from November 1 this year.

Penrith are facing a salary cap crunch, with the club from the foot of the mountains having a host of players off-contract, and their constant run of success likely dictating that all of them be in line for upgrades.

‘It’s not AI, it’s real’: shock as RSPCA releases images of 250 dogs found at property

Dozens of dogs were found crammed into single living room space at property in undisclosed location in UK

More than 250 dogs have been found at a property in scenes so shocking that the RSPCA was forced to deny allegations that the images were faked by artificial intelligence.

The animal welfare charity said it took in 87 dogs from the property at an undisclosed location in the UK and the remainder went to the Dogs Trust, another charity.

After the RSPCA posted images of the property online showing dozens of the animals crammed into a living room space, members of the public accused the charity of generating the photos with AI tools.

RSPCA says 250 dogs found crammed into one home

Rescuers have found more than 250 poodle-cross dogs living in a single home, the RSPCA has said.

The animal welfare charity said the numbers and living conditions of the dogs, discovered at an undisclosed location in the UK, "had rapidly grown out of control amid extenuating family circumstances".

It also said a "shocking" image taken by a rescuer – showing dozens of the dogs crammed into a living room – was not generated by AI, in response to dozens of comments on social media suggesting it was fake.

The photo illustrates the "staggering reality" of the multi-animal incidents dealt with by the RSPCA, which have increased by 70% in England and Wales since 2021, it said.

Moment more than 250 poodles are rescued from inside one home before getting an incredible makeover

This is the moment 250 poodles were rescued from the same house after their owners claimed they were 'overwhelmed by breeding'.

The poor animals were discovered in a home covered in their own filth with many of them suffering from sore skin and matted coats.

They had been in the care of an 'extremely vulnerable, elderly owner' and their living conditions had 'rapidly spiralled out of control', the RSPCA said.

In a disgusting picture from inside the house, the dogs can be seen clambering over each other as they fill a room nearly from wall to wall. Some of the pooches take shelter elsewhere with two sat under a table and one perched inside a woodburner.

Danger lurks in Piastri shock as early pecking order emerges; rules fear exposed — F1 Talking Pts

McLaren has been keen to play down expectations for the early part of the season, insisting that it’s a step behind presumed leader Mercedes and even likely contender Ferrari.

The team has been leaning hard into the narrative that not being a works constructor is going to cost it results early in the season, when the engine manufacturers will have a knowledge advantage when it comes to operating the motor.

That may well be true, but on Friday afternoon Oscar Piastri did his best to zero the difference.

‘We seem to be on the back foot’ – Leclerc wary of Mercedes threat in Australia

The drivers, teams and Pirelli report back on all the action from Friday practice in Melbourne, ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

It was not the ideal opening session for McLaren, who had Piastri going slow on track with a loss of power in the first few laps. While he did get going and completed the session, Norris only managed seven laps before being called back to the garage for a precautionary gearbox change.

A former member of Oscar Piastri’s inner circle has been called up to help his rival and Formula 1 title favourite George Russell ahead of Sunday’s race because of travel issues caused by the war in the Middle East, while ongoing mechanical problems threatened to derail Aston Martin’s Australian Grand Prix.

On a dramatic Friday at Albert Park, Piastri completed a sizzling second practice session to clock the fastest lap for the day, and Aston Martin design guru Adrian Newey revealed his team arrived at the Australian Grand Prix with just two usable batteries.

Ford Australia has recalled some of its Ranger and Everest units, according to a Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication, Sports and the Arts filing.

It concerns 244 units affected in the 2022 model year relating to a low battery level causing the transmission to shift into the Park setting at low speeds.

“Due to a software issue, under certain circumstances if the battery level drops below a critical threshold, the transmission may shift into Park when the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 6 km/h,” the notice reads.

Ford recalls 2022 Ford Ranger and Ford Everest models over safety issue

Ford has issued an urgent recall affecting two car models over major safety concerns caused by software issues.

The alert was issued for the 2022 Ford Ranger and Ford Everest models, with more than 200 cars affected.

The Department of Transport said the vehicles have a defect caused by a software issue, where if the battery level drops below a critical threshold, the transmission may shift itself into the park position when the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 6km/h.

“This may cause a sudden stop without the rear brake lamps illuminating as intended,” they said.

“A sudden stop whilst driving at low speed and the rear brake lamps not illuminating as intended could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

The Coalition Split and the Re-emergence of One Nation

Despite denials, I find it hard to believe that this week’s split in the Coalition doesn’t stem from the reported surge in support for One Nation. Perhaps this week is not all about One Nation, but what has been building for months is about One Nation.

Voting intentions in this week’s Newspoll recorded One Nation on 22% of the national vote, for the first time polling ahead of the Coalition on 21%. Labor’s support slipped to 32% with the Greens on 12% and Others 13%.

Similar results from lesser known pollsters released since the start of January were dismissed. But when Newspoll starts reporting a surge in One Nation support, it gets more attention from the political classes.

Triple rate hike: Shock as Aus big bank delivers blow ahead of RBA

Homebuyers or owners looking to lock in a fixed loan have been hit with a massive jump today.

One of Australia’s biggest banks has delivered a brutal blow to homebuyers with the equivalent of a triple rate hike, adding hundreds to the cost of a typical fixed mortgage repayment.

The Commonwealth Bank, Australia’s largest, jacked up its fixed rates by up to 0.70 percentage points – the same as if the Reserve Bank hiked three times in a row.

The bank’s savage repricing saw its three-year fixed rate rocket from 5.34 per cent to 6.04 per cent, leaving borrowers who locked in earlier dodging a financial bullet.

    Bank’s painful move for homeowners

Australia’s major home loan lenders are lifting their fixed rate offerings, in a grim sign for cash-strapped mortgage holders.

The Commonwealth Bank has lifted interest rates on its fixed home loans by up to 0.70 per cent, to make its lowest rate 5.79 per cent for two-years.

CBA is not alone in lifting interest rates with data from rate tracking site Canstar showing 34 lenders have hiked at least one fixed rate offering in the past month.

The lift in fixed interest rates come ahead of a forecast of interest rate hike in February.

The Reserve Bank of Australia next meets on February 2-3, with the CBA warning the official cash rate could rise from 3.60 per cent to 3.85 per cent.
