    Iraq hold off Bolivia to claim final World Cup place

    Iraq became the 48th and final team to qualify for the World Cup, after they defeated Bolivia 2-1 in an intercontinental playoff in Mexico on Tuesday to secure the nation’s first appearance at the finals tournament in 40 years.

    Iraq, whose preparations for the playoff had been disrupted by the war in the Middle East, will play in Group I against Norway, France and Senegal during the summer tournament.

    Goals from Ali Al-Hamadi and Aymen Hussein secured a famous win for Iraq, whose last appearance at the World Cup finals came at the 1986 tournament in Mexico.

    The victory marked a triumph for Iraq’s Australian head coach, Graham Arnold, who had initially sought to have the playoff on Tuesday postponed because of disruption caused by the regional conflict triggered by US‑Israeli strikes on Iran.

    Sick Osaka hopes to be OK by Australian Open

    PERTH, Australia — Four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka is feeling under the weather at the United Cup.

    After losing her first match for Japan against Greece's Maria Sakkari on Friday, Osaka said she got "really sick" over the holiday period and wasn't operating at 100% during the 6-4, 6-2 loss.

    Osaka was coughing at times during the match and appeared to lack energy. She said she likely caught an illness from her 2-year-old daughter Shai.

    "I have been dealing with some health stuff, so I'm kind of just happy to be out here right now," Osaka said. "It's not serious, but I'm not operating at the percent that I want to be operating at, which kind of sucks, because I had a really good offseason so I thought I was going to do really well here."

    The four-time major winner says she began feeling ill over the Christmas period.
