Football transfer rumours: Guimarães set for Arsenal? Newcastle to bring in Froholdt?

Eddie Howe presumably won’t be reading this page for a while. Perhaps the now departed Newcastle boss will be seeking some beach time, looking out to sea and mentally preparing his audition for the England job while his assistant Jason Tindall works on trying to be as quick over the first few yards as Anthony Barry.

The Magpies fly out to La Manga on Friday for a pre-season training camp and it remains to be seen if Bruno Guimarães, a £75m Arsenal target, will turn up to the airport, meet them in Spain or send the lads a farewell on social media while house-hunting in London. Very latest reports suggest a deal to the champions has “moved closer” following Howe’s exit.

The biggest loser from Arsenal signing Bruno Guimaraes is not Martin Zubimendi

Bruno Guimaraes is very, very close to joining Arsenal from Newcastle United, according to recent reports.

All there is left, according to the latest from L'Equipe, is the agents fee, bonuses, and other small fees. The general agreement, in principle, is finalised between the two parties.

In a transfer that was not at all expected at the start of the saga, it now revolves around the notion that Arsenal have one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League in their ranks.

Martin Zubimendi was signed from Real Sociedad last summer, but it was quickly made clear to Mikel Arteta that in some games, Zubimendi was just not performing consistently well, and for them to take the leap, their midfield had to be a bit stronger. However, the player who is losing out the most after this signing is definitely not Zubimendi.

    Morgan Smithies to the Bears

For months we’ve wondered what was going on with Morgan Smithies. Now we have our answer, with reports that Smithies will join Perth on a three-year deal from next season.

It ends a short Canberra stay for Smithies. He came to the club in 2024 and had his best season then, doing a slightly dour impression of Corey Horsburgh’s role – big minutes, big tackles, a bit of passing. Before that season his passing game had been talked up, but it felt like something the club was trying to talk into existence, rather than something he demonstrated.

He never quite found that capability consistently. He never found that power. Even in big minutes he didn’t break tackles (144th in the competition in tackle breaks in 2024), or make big metres. In 2025 as the Raiders thrived, he was relied on less. His output, his performance, and his minutes have dwindled. This season Jayden Brailey and Daine Laurie have been preferred in the middle to him. That is not good.

Revealed: Eels in fight to keep star forward as rival launches three-club raid

The Parramatta Eels are in a fight to retain veteran prop Junior Paulo as the Perth Bears move to land the former NSW forward away from western Sydney.

Perth have reportedly tabled a two-year deal for the 32-year-old which, according to Code Sports reporter Michael Carryannis is “significantly” more money than what the Eels are prepared to offer the 32-year-old.

Fagan’s first big rebuild signing hits historic double milestone

Charlie Cameron is a veritable feast of football content and quirky football facts this week ahead of a major reward for a huge career decision nine years ago.

It’s almost to make you want to steal the old advertising slogan… but wait, there’s more!

Cameron is the #1 Member of the Chris Fagan Brisbane Lions Rebuilding Program, having made a call in October 2017 to walk away from an AFL grand final side and join the wooden-spooners.

The now 32-year-old excitement machine was the first ‘big’ signing of the club’s rebuild under coach Fagan, who at the time was 12 months, 22 games, five wins and one ‘spoon’ into his time in Brisbane.

Saints make late change ahead of huge Roos clash, Lions host Port. Follow LIVE

ST KILDA has made a change minutes before the first bounce against North Melbourne with Rowan Marshall ruled out.

Marshall will miss with a back spasm and has been replaced by Anthony Caminiti.

It came after Cooper Sharman was ruled out an hour before the bounce and replaced by Dan Butler.

The Roos (8-10) continue to frustrate as they added Melbourne to the finals contenders that they have at least challenged before suffering a defeat, extending their record of failing to beat a side currently sitting in the top 10.

The Kangaroos' wildcard hopes are hanging by a thread and the clash with the Saints is their last match-up against a bottom-half side in a tough run home.

Manchester United are targeting the Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, who is valued in the region of £50m. Talks are yet to take place between the two clubs but an offer is expected.

After missing out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, United were forced to look elsewhere as they seek to rebuild their midfield under Michael Carrick, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott also of interest to the club’s hierarchy. The Brazilian is behind Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández at Stamford Bridge and the Blues need to bring in funds in order to aide the ambitions to strengthen of the new head coach, Xabi Alonso.

Nine, Foxtel win NRL rights in massive Australian sport media deal

Nine and Foxtel are on the cusp of a multibillion-dollar agreement to keep airing the NRL in what could be the most expensive rights deal for an Australian sporting code in history.

The pending deal, which is set to run until 2034, could make the sport more valuable than the AFL, a longstanding goal of the Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys.

Sources familiar with the matter said the seven-year $5 billion deal included $150 million annually from Nine for the free-to-air TV rights, and Foxtel paying $520 million annually for the pay TV component.

While the deal is yet to be signed and it is unclear how much of the headline figure will be made up of free advertising, the pact stands to amount to about $700 million a year, including the rights to broadcast the game in New Zealand.
