Residents slam 'selfish' Australia Day act at popular public beach: 'Council should stop it'

Another public holiday has rolled around for Australians. With it comes the controversial practice of reserving prime vanatage points ahead of council-planned celebrations.

On New Year's Eve, Yahoo News reported on the outrage that rippled through Manly when revellers used cabanas to claim their spot on the wharf foreshore before the city's firework display.

Now, ahead of Australia Day festivities in the Sutherland Shire, the debate has been reignited at Cronulla, with dozens of people using picnic blankets in the same way.

By 8am on Monday, one resident urged the community to "get down here early if you want a good spot", despite the show commencing at 4pm.

Cronulla beach clear of seaweed in good start to Australia Day in the shire

It was a good start to Australia Day at Cronulla beach, with the seaweed clearing overnight.

Big seas have returned, washing the thick weed, which has been present for several days, out to sea.

Surf conditions at Cronulla were mild, but bigger waves were rolling in at other Bate Bay beaches.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast waves along the Sydney coast of one to two metres.

"Surf conditions in the early morning may be more powerful than they appear," the bureau said.

Forecast strong winds will be monitored by organisers of the planned fireworks at the end of Cronulla concert.
