Smoke and mirrors fill the vacuum as Springboks and All Blacks brace for battle

South Africa welcome New Zealand for their Greatest Rivalry series with the suspicion that they plan on beating the tourists at their own game

The problem with Test weeks is that they can feel long. Cricketers can play for days on end, footballers every few nights, but rugby players step on to the international stage for just 80 minutes per week. The result is a drawn-out vacuum in the buildup and if it’s not a “war of words” unfolding, it tends to be head coaches ramming home their points to the referee.

We lap it up, of course we do as we wait for Saturday to come, and though the pre-match sparring between South Africa and New Zealand is tedious to some, it is all part of the fun to others. This week in Johannesburg has been lively without crossing the line into poisonous. Suffice it to say that the referee Matt Carley is in for one hell of an afternoon in Saturday’s series opener at Ellis Park but the very fact that both Rassie Erasmus and Dave Rennie have stepped on to the offensive demonstrates the magnitude of the coming four-Test series. It promises to be a barn-burner.

Thin air and death threats: Why Ellis Park is the All Blacks' ultimate test

The cauldron, the cathedral, the mecca. Nothing in world rugby compares to the grand Ellis Park stage.

Wherever your vantage point this weekend, soak it in. Springboks-All Blacks tests at this stadium are the pinnacle, the greatest challenge any touring
    team confronts.

From Twickenham to Stade de France and the Principality Stadium, there are vastly larger, more aesthetically striking, venues dotted throughout the rugby world.

No place, though, makes you feel more foreign, more of an outsider, than Ellis Park’s towering stands and hostile arena.

Fans gather outside the famed ground, in a notoriously treacherous Johannesburg neighbourhood, hours before kickoff to stoke their braais, feast on mounds of meat, beer and the favoured local brandy and Coke as they build to the crescendo of the occasion.

4Warn Weather Alert extended as Detroit experiences some of the world’s worst air quality

The 4Warn Weather Alert has been extended today as wildfire smoke continues to blanket Southeast Michigan, giving Metro Detroit the worst air quality in the world this morning. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued an Air Quality Alert for the entire state due to elevated levels of fine particulate pollution from Canadian wildfire smoke. The smoke has settled near the surface, creating unhealthy conditions for everyone, especially children, older adults, and people with heart disease or respiratory illnesses such as asthma. If possible, avoid strenuous outdoor activities today and limit the amount of time spent outside. Keep windows closed, run air conditioning on recirculate if available, and consider using an air purifier indoors. Those who must be outside for extended periods should take frequent breaks indoors.

Dangerous smoke from Canadian wildfires moves into the Great Lakes and Northeast

Massive plumes of Canadian wildfire smoke have started to pour over the border into the United States, bringing dangerous air quality to more than 100 million people in the Midwest and Northeast.

Smoke shrouded skylines and caused air quality to plummet Wednesday in the Northeast, including in New York and Boston. Both locations were under air quality alerts warning of unhealthy air due to elevated levels of fine particulates from wildfire smoke. Alerts were issued ahead of the worst smoke for places in the Midwest, including Chicago and Detroit.

Smoke has already been an issue this summer in parts of the West, Plains and Midwest as stateside fires have burned more than 3.6 million acres, mostly in the western half of the country. But the thicker smoke that has moved over the Great Lakes and Northeast is from wildfires to the north.

Watch: Thick smoke billows from South Korea car parts plant in deadly fire

South Korean authorities say 11 people were killed when a huge fire engulfed a car parts plant in the central city of Daejeon. Three others are still missing and 59 were injured.

Videos show huge flames and thick smoke pouring from the building, with firefighters struggling to contain the blaze. There were 170 workers inside when it broke out.

Firefighters said they were unable to enter the structure earlier due to concerns it would collapse. There was also a risk of igniting sodium stored there.

An overnight search began for those missing, after the building was deemed safe to enter. Authorities did not immediately confirm the cause of the blaze, but said it appeared to have spread rapidly.
