Grasshopper’s 2026 Australian Snow Season Outlook – June Update

Welcome back to another Australian seasonal update, and although it might not yet look like it, we are a few weeks into the snow season. Despite some early falls and optimism things have been warm and the few storms that have rolled through were rather wet. So, let’s revisit what our expectations were for this winter below as we dive back into our seasonal outlook.

If you have been keeping up to date with the weekly forecasts, you’ll know that there isn’t a huge amount to report. A front/trough system approaching from the west this week is largely all bark to bite and will weaken thanks to the high-pressure system over the southeast.

The school holidays start at the end of the week for Victoria and Queensland, but people heading to the mountains will find almost no snow in what is already one of the worst starts to the Australian snow season on record.

The official snow depth at Spencers Creek – the highest of three New South Wales sites where Snowy Hydro regularly measures snow throughout the cooler months – is currently zero.

Just weeks from winter, and south-east Australia is still basking in summertime warmth.

Temperatures on Friday soared more than 10 degrees Celsius above average from northern South Australia to southern Tasmania, shattering May records in several states.

But after weeks of stagnant weather, volatility is about to return.

A cool, gusty and stormy change will follow the heat during the coming days, followed by an intense wave of polar air midweek which has the potential to bring a wintry mix of showers, thunderstorms, hail and snow.

The current spell of unseasonable warmth is due to a stalled region of high pressure in the Tasman Sea.

By far the most May heat records were broken in Tasmanian and Victoria this Friday, May 1, 2026, with South Australia and New South Wales also chiming in with a smattering of record highs.

Winter is sticking around despite the calendar telling everyone it's spring.

The National Weather Service issued a new winter weather advisory for three states expecting to see heavy snowfall over the weekend and into early next week.

"An upper-level energy moving onshore over California on Saturday will move to the Upper Midwest by Monday evening," the NWS said. "The system will produce rain with embedded thunderstorms over parts of Northern California and Nevada on Saturday and Sunday."

"The system will produce late-season light snowfall over the higher elevations of the Northern Rockies, the Northern Intermountain Region, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Great Basin, and the Central Rockies Saturday into Sunday."

Why Snowflake (SNOW) Shares Are Falling Today

Shares of cloud data platform provider Snowflake SNOW fell 10.2% in the afternoon session after a broader sell-off in the enterprise software sector hit the company.

The decline was part of a sector-wide repricing event, spurred by growing concerns that the emergence of “agentic AI” from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI threatened the traditional Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business model.

Snowflake’s shares are quite volatile and have had 19 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Snowflake and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 1 day ago when the stock dropped 8.5% on the news that reports of a ceasefire breach in the Middle East spiked market volatility as fears grew that a fragile U.S.-Iran truce would unravel.

Is SNOW Stock Falling on AI Fear or a SaaS Valuation Reset?

SNOW stock closed at $132.24 on April 9, 2026, down 11.83%, but the selloff occurred during a broader software-sector drawdown, not a broad-market liquidation.

The primary concern was the impact of AI, heightened by Anthropic's recent product cycle and increasing worries that AI agents could erode traditional SaaS pricing power.

Snowflake's own fiscal 2026 numbers do not yet show a same-company demand break: Q4 revenue was $1.28 billion, product revenue was $1.23 billion, and remaining performance obligations reached $9.77 billion, up 42% year over year.

Snowflake's $9.77 billion in RPO represents about 2.2 years of FY2026 product revenue, which does not align with a business experiencing immediate displacement.

Management also reaffirmed FY2027 guidance on March 31, 2026, including $5.66 billion in full-year product revenue.

Snow will fall this week from Tuesday, December 23, for at least a couple of days in elevated parts of Tasmania, with a few flakes likely to persist into Christmas Day.

That means a White Christmas for our southernmost state in the heart of the Australian summer.

Tasmanian summer snowfalls often consist of just a few flakes at the state's highest points, such as the summit of Cradle Mountain (1545m) or Tasmania's highest peak Mt Ossa (1617m).

Rare weather phenomenon may treat Aussies to first white Christmas in 19 years

Some among us could be lucky enough to enjoy a white Christmas this year. The rare Australian phenomenon last occurred almost two decades ago.

A senior meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) told Yahoo News the "unusual" event is looking likely for some in Tasmania. Others across the country will grapple with extreme heat or storms.

The bureau's Angus Hines said there was "definitely the potential" for some snow in southern and western areas of Tasmania on Christmas Eve and into Christmas morning if the forecast stays true.

"The period where it looks most likely is beginning on Christmas Eve and then heading into the first half of the day on Christmas morning, and then gets increasingly unlikely after maybe 8 or 9 am," he told Yahoo News.

Brittany Snow Is Engaged 2 Years After Tyler Stanaland Divorce

The Hunting Wives star is engaged to boyfriend Hunter Moreno, a source confirms to Us Weekly.

Snow’s The Beast in Me costar Claire Danes seemingly confirmed the news at the show’s premiere earlier this month. “You’re engaged?” Danes, 46, says with a grin while talking to Snow, 39, in a video shared by Deuxmoi on Monday, November 5. “When did that happen?” (Snow’s reps could not be reached for comment.)

Snow and Moreno were first romantically linked in October 2024, though have seldom publicly addressed their relationship status. The actress, for her part, does regularly “like” Moreno’s social media snaps, which he often reciprocates.
