Genesee County Spartans host Southern Tier on Saturday

The Genesee County Spartans open the home portion of their 2026 semipro football season this Saturday.

The Northeastern Football Alliance contest is set for 5 p.m. at Pembroke Town Park, not at Van Detta Stadium in Batavia as previously announced.

Last weekend’s game against the Upstate Predators was determined by league officials to not count in the standings due to the lack of certified referees, and it will be rescheduled.

Head Coach Jermaine Henderson’s team is one of eight in the NFA, which downsized from two divisions into one division this season.

Last year, the Spartans finished with a 3-6 record, losing in the NFA playoff semifinals to the Buffalo Stampede, 20-6. This season marks the fourth for the team in the league.

Southern Utah locals creating map to document historic pioneer rock walls in Leeds

LEEDS, Washington County — Historic rock walls dot the landscape in the small town of Leeds in southern Utah, and visitors will soon be able to know where each wall is.

In a project spearheaded by the Silver Reef Foundation in conjunction with the Washington County Historical Society, locals have been working together to create an interactive map that shows exactly where the rock walls are.

"It's an extension of what I believe may very well be the per-capita municipality in Utah with the most history," said Mayor Wayne Peterson.

Leeds, just north of St. George, was settled in 1867 by pioneers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, when the nearby town of Harrisburg failed to provide enough water to sustain crops. The neighboring town of Silver Reef brought in miners from around the world to gather silver ore. Farmers in Leeds produced food for miners in exchange for much-needed cash that the Silver Reef miners brought in.

Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office reminds voters of congressional candidate filing deadline

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office is reminding voters and prospective candidates that the qualifying deadline is approaching for congressional races under the state’s newly redrawn district map.

The Tennessee General Assembly approved revised congressional district boundaries on May 7 and established a special qualifying period for candidates seeking election to the U.S. House of Representatives. That qualifying period runs through noon Friday, May 15, 2026.

Gov. Bill Lee signed the new congressional maps into law last week after lawmakers approved the revised district boundaries during a special legislative session. The changes could help the GOP flip every congressional seat in the state.

Tennessee gerrymander ‘unlawfully targeted Black voters,’ new lawsuit claims

Tennessee’s congressional gerrymander, which wiped out the state’s only Black-majority district, has drawn another lawsuit.

Black voters and civil rights groups, represented by the ACLU, filed suit in federal court Monday, charging that the GOP-led redraw, which cracked the city of Memphis into three districts, intentionally discriminated against Black voters in violation of the 14th and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

“The racial impact and motivations behind the dismemberment of the State’s largest predominantly Black city, in order to deprive Black residents of the power to elect even a single member of the State’s congressional delegation, are evident on the face of the hastily enacted congressional map as well as the statements and actions of the all-White legislators who advanced the scheme,” the plaintiffs alleged.

Heavy winds bring power outages for thousands across Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A storm that is expected to bring rain in the valley and snow to the mountains has also brought with it strong winds that have left over a thousand people in Utah without power on Tuesday morning.

According to Rocky Mountain Power's Outage map, over 1,600 customers are without power in northern Utah. A majority of those outages are in the Salt Lake Valley, with hundreds also without power near Vernal.

Some outages have also been reported in southern and eastern Utah.

The utility company listed wind as the main cause of the outages. Most of the outages are estimated to be restored before 11:00 a.m.

Strong winds, winter storms force road restrictions for several highways across Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Several road restrictions were implemented across Utah as strong winds swept the state late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Early Tuesday morning, the Utah Department of Transportation prohibited high-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks and RVs from driving on I-80 through Tooele County due to high winds. The restrictions were also extended to other light vehicles that could be at risk of blowing over.

State Route 143 near Brian Head and State Route 14 near Cedar City were also closed in both directions due to strong winds, prompting UDOT to force drivers onto alternate routes.

The restrictions come as heavy winds blow in a series of winter storms into the state. The National Weather Service said strong winds with gusts hitting above 60 miles per hour were expected, especially in the area of I-80 in Tooele County.
