SpaceX: How to buy before the IPO

It’s possible to get in on SpaceX (SPAX.PVT) before its initial public offering (IPO), but there are risks, trade-offs, and heavy fees.

The upcoming SpaceX IPO could happen as early as this June, with a potentially massive 30% retail allocation, with underwriters of major trading platforms providing retail investors with allocations post-IPO.

But for those who want in a little sooner, it's a little complicated.

The most direct route to SpaceX stock before an IPO is through a private secondary market. These are transactions in which existing shareholders — employees, early investors, or former contractors — sell their vested stock to new buyers. SpaceX does not issue new shares in these deals; investors buy from existing shareholders.

SpaceX lays out IPO details, targets early June roadshow: Reuters

SpaceX outlined details of its highly anticipated IPO at a meeting with its team of bankers Monday night, telling them it plans to earmark a large portion of shares for retail investors and will host 1,500 of them at an event in June following the IPO roadshow launch, according to two people familiar with the matter.

"Retail is going to be a critical part of this and a bigger part than any IPO in history," Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen said during the virtual meeting, the two people said, asking not to be identified because the discussion was private.

Johnsen said the large retail component is by design as "those are folks that have been incredibly supportive of us and of Elon (Musk) for a long time, and we want to make sure that we recognize that."

SpaceX Starlink satellite suffers mysterious ‘anomaly’ in orbit

Elon Musk’s space Internet company said this satellite, which appears to have blown to pieces, did not appear to pose a risk to the ISS or the upcoming NASA moon mission

One of Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet satellites suffered an “anomaly” on Sunday while in orbit around Earth, the company said in a social media post. The incident appears to have created some debris, with fragments likely to fall to Earth over the next few weeks, according to LeoLabs, a company that monitors satellites in low-Earth orbit.

The satellite lost communication at about 560 kilometers above Earth, Starlink said. While the statement from Starlink, which is a subsidiary of Musk’s rocket company SpaceX, merely noted that investigations are ongoing, LeoLabs said its radar observations of the event indicated an “internal energetic source” as the likely cause rather than a collision. SpaceX and LeoLabs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elon Musk's next moonshot: The $20B "largest chip manufacturing facility ever"

Elon Musk has previously promised the arrival of fully autonomous Teslas and ultrafast Hyperloop transport – both of which are yet to materialize. For his next trick, the galaxy's richest earthling plans to build an enormous chip manufacturing plant that will positively dwarf every other such facility on the planet.

Musk believes that scaling computing power is the path to solving complex physics challenges, accelerating humanity's future, and becoming a multi-planet species.

To that end, Terafab is a joint venture between his firms Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, to create the largest end-to-end chip design and manufacturing facility. This will kick off at the Advanced Technology Fab in Austin, Texas, which is home to Tesla's headquarters.

A SpaceX Starlink satellite is tumbling and falling out of space after partial breakup in orbit

An anomaly led to loss of contact with the satellite and "the release of a small number of trackable low relative velocity objects."

One of SpaceX's Starlink broadband internet satellites suffered an anomaly in orbit on Wednesday (Dec. 17) and is now plunging toward Earth.

The mishap led to a loss of communication with the Starlink spacecraft, which was orbiting at an altitude of 260 miles (418 kilometers), according to the company.

In addition, "the anomaly led to venting of the propulsion tank, a rapid decay in semi-major axis by about 4 km [2.5 miles], and the release of a small number of trackable low relative velocity objects," representatives of Starlink, a company that's owned by SpaceX, said in an X post on Thursday morning (Dec. 18). That description suggests that the Starlink satellite's propulsion tank may have ruptured or suffered some other type of damage.

Starlink satellite explodes, causing small debris field in space

A debris field comprised of a Starlink satellite's remains is floating through space, after a minor explosion broke off pieces of the tech and sent them tumbling around Earth's orbit.

Space X reported the anomaly earlier this week, which the company said resulted in trackable debris that included the satellite's propulsion tank and the largely intact satellite body, which is still in orbit. SpaceX says the satellite, which the company says isn't close enough to the International Space Station (ISS) to pose a risk to astronauts, will reenter the atmosphere and reach its "demise" in the next week.

"As the world’s largest satellite constellation operator, we are deeply committed to space safety. We take these events seriously. Our engineers are rapidly working to root cause and mitigate the source of the anomaly and are already in the process of deploying software to our vehicles that increases protections against this type of event," wrote SpaceX.
