Satellite imagery captures race to recover 170-foot SpaceX Starship in the Indian Ocean

Space exploration enthusiasts have been tracking the unprecedented journey of SpaceX’s latest Starship prototype, which wound up floating in the Indian Ocean after the company’s latest test flight. Now, satellites have captured mind-bending images of boats working to haul the rocket back to shore.

The saga of Ship 40 — as this specific Starship prototype is called — began on July 24 with the launch of SpaceX’s 13th fully integrated test flight the rocket system, which includes the upper spacecraft, or “ship,” as well as the Super Heavy rocket booster, the bottommost part of the rocket that fires the ship off the launchpad and toward space.

Why the SpaceX IPO is a peak passive moment for capital markets

For all the fear and loathing about SpaceX’s fast-tracked entry into passive market indices, investors are realising that everything is actually active.

On Friday, the SpaceX initial public offering suffered a major setback. Index provider S&P Global said it would not change its rules to fast-track the inclusion of Elon Musk’s company in its index.

SpaceX would have to wait a minimum of 12 months, have a free float of at least 10 per cent and meet profitability tests if it is to be added to the S&P indices, which are closely tracked by trillions of dollars in institutional capital and exchange-traded funds.

Why some Australian investors will risk punting on Musk’s $2.5 trillion space vision

Yee-haw! Elon Musk is offering Australian investors their own special opportunity to buy a small piece of his wild space dream – the listing of his $US1.77 trillion ($2.5 trillion), YES TRILLION, SpaceX.

This is one for the adrenaline junkies. It’s a ride without a harness, airbags or safety nets, and few road rules.

The Australian corporate regulator has even required some modifications in a special Australian addendum to the SpaceX prospectus – so that Australian investors get an extra layer of warnings about how they could potentially lose their money in the SpaceX float, which is scheduled for this week.

As leading Australian retail broker, Commonwealth Bank has even come to the party, enabling those with CommSec accounts to take part in the raising or trade shares once listed.

SpaceX IPO: how can I buy shares, and what are the risks?

Elon Musk firm plans the biggest stock market launch in history – but experts have flagged potential downsides

It’s being billed as the biggest stock market launch in history. Shares in Elon Musk’s SpaceX are poised to be released on 12 June with a valuation of $135 (£100.84). The company plans to sell 555.6m of them, which means it will raise $75bn from the sale.

On Friday, it was reported that up to a quarter of the shares could be reserved for individual investors, rather than funds and banks. This is a bigger share than is typically the case in a large initial public offering (IPO).

SpaceX launches its biggest rocket yet in test flight from Texas

The launch is the 12th test flight of the mega-rocket that CEO Elon Musk is building to get people to Mars one day

SpaceX launched its biggest, most powerful Starship yet on a test flight Friday, an upgraded version that Nasa is counting on to land astronauts on the moon.

The redesigned mega-rocket made its debut two days after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced he’s taking the company public. It blasted off from the southern tip of Texas, carrying 20 mock Starlink satellites for release halfway around the world.

It’s the 12th test flight of the rocket that Musk is building to get people to Mars one day. But first comes the moon and Nasa’s Artemis program.

The most powerful rocket ever built is now even bigger and more powerful. But will it work?

After a seven-month hiatus, SpaceX is set to launch a new, more powerful version of its Starship megarocket — reigniting a make-or-break testing campaign aimed at hashing out unprecedented rocketry challenges and getting the vehicle ready to carry NASA astronauts to the moon.

SpaceX set to launch amped-up Starship V3 on inaugural test flight

But experts question whether this vehicle — or a competing spacecraft under development by the Jeff Bezos-founded Blue Origin — will be ready in time to sway the outcome of what US lawmakers say is an ongoing space race with China.

Version 3 of Starship was expected to launch Thursday evening, but a series of stop-and-start holds occurred late in the countdown. With teams unable to clear the red flags in time to recycle the countdown clock, SpaceX could make another launch attempt as soon as Friday at 6:15 p.m. ET, but the company said it will share updates on social media.

SpaceX readies 12th test flight of massive Starship rocket as IPO looms

SpaceX is readying for the 12th test flight of its massive Starship rocket on Thursday, a landmark launch ahead of the company's IPO that's expected next month.

The launch will represent the debut of Starship V3, which "is designed to deliver 100 metric tons to Earth's orbit in a fully reusable configuration while enabling rapid turnaround times akin to commercial aviation," SpaceX said in its IPO prospectus on Wednesday.

A 90-minute launch window is set to open at 6:30 p.m. ET, and the event can be viewed by webcast. The launch could be delayed by weather or other disruptions.

Elon Musk's reusable rocket maker has spent more than $15 billion on its Starship program, according to Wednesday's filing. The company says Starship is key to launching more satellites into orbit to build out its Starlink constellation at a faster pace than it's been able to using Falcon 9 rockets. Starlink delivers wireless internet services to consumers, businesses and government agencies.

Live coverage: SpaceX to launch first Starship Version 3 rocket

SpaceX is set to launch the third generation of its Starship rocket as soon as Thursday, May 21, from its company town in southern Texas, called Starbase.

The 407-foot-tall (124 m) two-stage rocket will fly on a suborbital mission dubbed Flight 12. The mission will see the Super Heavy booster (Booster 19) splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico and the Starship upper stage (Ship 39) meet its own aquatic end in the Indian Ocean.

Liftoff is scheduled during a launch window that opens at 5:30 p.m. PDT (6:30 p.m. EDT / 2230 UTC).

Spaceflight Now will have live coverage beginning about two hours prior to liftoff.

Following five flights of Starship Version 2 in 2025, the company progressed to the next block upgrade of the rocket after extensive testing, including two separate explosive set backs on the test stand, which destroyed a Super Heavy Booster and a Starship.

SpaceX: How to buy before the IPO

It’s possible to get in on SpaceX (SPAX.PVT) before its initial public offering (IPO), but there are risks, trade-offs, and heavy fees.

The upcoming SpaceX IPO could happen as early as this June, with a potentially massive 30% retail allocation, with underwriters of major trading platforms providing retail investors with allocations post-IPO.

But for those who want in a little sooner, it's a little complicated.

The most direct route to SpaceX stock before an IPO is through a private secondary market. These are transactions in which existing shareholders — employees, early investors, or former contractors — sell their vested stock to new buyers. SpaceX does not issue new shares in these deals; investors buy from existing shareholders.

SpaceX lays out IPO details, targets early June roadshow: Reuters

SpaceX outlined details of its highly anticipated IPO at a meeting with its team of bankers Monday night, telling them it plans to earmark a large portion of shares for retail investors and will host 1,500 of them at an event in June following the IPO roadshow launch, according to two people familiar with the matter.

"Retail is going to be a critical part of this and a bigger part than any IPO in history," Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen said during the virtual meeting, the two people said, asking not to be identified because the discussion was private.

Johnsen said the large retail component is by design as "those are folks that have been incredibly supportive of us and of Elon (Musk) for a long time, and we want to make sure that we recognize that."

SpaceX Starlink satellite suffers mysterious ‘anomaly’ in orbit

Elon Musk’s space Internet company said this satellite, which appears to have blown to pieces, did not appear to pose a risk to the ISS or the upcoming NASA moon mission

One of Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet satellites suffered an “anomaly” on Sunday while in orbit around Earth, the company said in a social media post. The incident appears to have created some debris, with fragments likely to fall to Earth over the next few weeks, according to LeoLabs, a company that monitors satellites in low-Earth orbit.

The satellite lost communication at about 560 kilometers above Earth, Starlink said. While the statement from Starlink, which is a subsidiary of Musk’s rocket company SpaceX, merely noted that investigations are ongoing, LeoLabs said its radar observations of the event indicated an “internal energetic source” as the likely cause rather than a collision. SpaceX and LeoLabs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elon Musk's next moonshot: The $20B "largest chip manufacturing facility ever"

Elon Musk has previously promised the arrival of fully autonomous Teslas and ultrafast Hyperloop transport – both of which are yet to materialize. For his next trick, the galaxy's richest earthling plans to build an enormous chip manufacturing plant that will positively dwarf every other such facility on the planet.

Musk believes that scaling computing power is the path to solving complex physics challenges, accelerating humanity's future, and becoming a multi-planet species.

To that end, Terafab is a joint venture between his firms Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, to create the largest end-to-end chip design and manufacturing facility. This will kick off at the Advanced Technology Fab in Austin, Texas, which is home to Tesla's headquarters.

A SpaceX Starlink satellite is tumbling and falling out of space after partial breakup in orbit

An anomaly led to loss of contact with the satellite and "the release of a small number of trackable low relative velocity objects."

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

One of SpaceX's Starlink broadband internet satellites suffered an anomaly in orbit on Wednesday (Dec. 17) and is now plunging toward Earth.

The mishap led to a loss of communication with the Starlink spacecraft, which was orbiting at an altitude of 260 miles (418 kilometers), according to the company.

In addition, "the anomaly led to venting of the propulsion tank, a rapid decay in semi-major axis by about 4 km [2.5 miles], and the release of a small number of trackable low relative velocity objects," representatives of Starlink, a company that's owned by SpaceX, said in an X post on Thursday morning (Dec. 18). That description suggests that the Starlink satellite's propulsion tank may have ruptured or suffered some other type of damage.

Starlink satellite explodes, causing small debris field in space

A debris field comprised of a Starlink satellite's remains is floating through space, after a minor explosion broke off pieces of the tech and sent them tumbling around Earth's orbit.

Space X reported the anomaly earlier this week, which the company said resulted in trackable debris that included the satellite's propulsion tank and the largely intact satellite body, which is still in orbit. SpaceX says the satellite, which the company says isn't close enough to the International Space Station (ISS) to pose a risk to astronauts, will reenter the atmosphere and reach its "demise" in the next week.

"As the world’s largest satellite constellation operator, we are deeply committed to space safety. We take these events seriously. Our engineers are rapidly working to root cause and mitigate the source of the anomaly and are already in the process of deploying software to our vehicles that increases protections against this type of event," wrote SpaceX.
