The Spider-Man: Brand New Day Stars on New York Being Its Own Character

Spidey has swung back into theaters, and fans are here for it. The movie has only been playing for a day, and it already earned both Certified Fresh and Verified Hot badges, with critics saying it’s the most mature Spider-Man movie yet.

To gear up fans for its premiere, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, and Sadie Sink sat down with director Destin Daniel Cretton, producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige, and Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Chris Tait to talk about the highly anticipated film, from New York being a character of its own to the film’s unique vibe within the Marvel universe and all of the research they did to nail the high-flying physicality.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Cast & Character Guide: Avengers, Mutants & More Superheroes

SPOILER ALERT: This post spoils some surprise appearances in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and character details.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day contains many familiar faces as well as one major newcomer.

The fourth solo Spider-Man installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, stars Tom Holland as the web slinger, but his Peter Parker has been forgotten by the majority of the world, including his closest friends MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). In addition to the stress of that event, Tom Holland’s Peter is undergoing some sort of puberty or metamorphosis with the arachnid DNA overwhelming his senses. There is also a mysterious psychic threat on the prowl that he is dealing with.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Actor Jacob Batalon Says He was “Hired For The Vibes”

Jacob Batalon was just 19 years old when he landed the life-changing role of Ned Leeds in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an experience he looks back on with equal parts humor and disbelief. Reflecting on why Marvel Studios chose him despite his relative lack of experience, the actor—now starring in Spider-Man: Brand New Day—admitted that “it was really… I think they really just hired me for the vibes. I think they just really enjoyed me and Tom together.”

Although he never directly asked the executive team why he stood out from the rest, he recalled that “a lot of what my first initial feedback was that they just really enjoyed Tom… like our, just our chemistry, or and how we just kind of got along from our first screen test.” MCU producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal created a supportive environment through every step of production, though Batalon noted “I was so spoiled from that movie that I just assumed every job was like that, and it’s not,” realizing later on how much more work goes into standard film sets.

The world’s favorite webslinger is back this week in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth film starring Tom Holland as one of the most iconic superheroes in the history of pop culture. While Brand New Day pushes the character in a new direction, it also recalls a half-century cinematic history of the friendly neighborhood teen in tights, which got us thinking about the dozen or so adventures of Spider-Man on the big screen. From a 1970s TV movie through the Tobey Maguire years, Andrew Garfield era, Spider-Verse flicks, and now the Holland quadrilogy, it’s been an incredible ride, one with extreme highs and regrettable lows. The world loves Spider-Man, and this is the order in which that love should be enshrined.

Every Spider-Man film ranked, from worst to best

The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be slowing down, but there will always be room for Spider-Man. Ever since Tobey Maguire squeezed into his spider-suit in 2002's Spider-Man, the web-slinger has been a mainstay on the big screen. With the arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we decided to rank every spider-movie that's come out since then.

It's difficult for a sequel to surpass the original, but sometimes, that's exactly what happens.

Of the four series of Spider-Man movies we've gotten this century, the pair of films starring Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger are widely considered the weakest. Garfield is winning as the nerdy Peter Parker, who fights crime as the wise-cracking Spider-Man, but the movies themselves are a cut below what fans can otherwise expect.

Every Tom Holland MCU Movie, Ranked

Ever since his debut in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland's Spider-Man has made his fair share of appearances across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once he met the Avengers and traded blows with Captain America (Chris Evans), Spider-Man instantly became more involved with the greater Marvel universe than ever before. Across his tenure in the MCU, Holland's Spider-Man has made an appearance in a total of seven MCU films, each a great addition to the large universe, not to mention entertaining watches.

Some would even say the films that Holland has appeared in are some of the best in the MCU. Whether it features him taking down metal-winged arms dealers or facing off against Thanos (Josh Brolin) himself, each Spider-Man intervention is of great quality and not to be sneezed at. Holland has also appeared in some of the MCU's most monumental films, making him essential to some of the most pivotal events in the universe. And while each of his movies is great, some are undoubtedly better.

Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal officially makes Marvel history

Jon Bernthal is quietly having the biggest year of his career. The Walking Dead veteran has been dominating the box office through the past few weekends through the overperformance of Christopher Nolan epic The Odyssey and now he's set to do it all again with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Let's also not forget that he starred in his own Disney Plus Special Presentation earlier this year, bringing Frank Castle back to the small screen in The Punisher: One Last Kill. Let me tell you something, man: Bernthal can do it all.

That being said, the acting veteran – who really made a name for himself as Shane Walsh on The Walking Dead all those years ago – has officially made history, bringing his version of The Punisher to the silver screen for the first time ever this summer. We knew it was coming as we had seen him in the multiple trailers for the Marvel movie, but seeing him in action was a completely different ball game.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Credits Scene Explained: Will Tom Holland Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Secret Wars’?

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” now playing in theaters.

After saving New York City in “Brand New Day,” Tom Holland‘s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man looks like he’s heading off-world once again. The post-credits scene in the latest Sony and Marvel movie revealed that the hero will return to the MCU and seems to be leaving Earth in his next appearance.

First, like many fans have theorized for months, Sadie Sink is playing X-Men member Jean Grey in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” She’s the primary antagonist in the movie, though it’s later revealed that the Department of Damage Control kidnapped and killed her older sister Sara. Once he realizes the cause of Jean’s Damage Control crusade, Spider-Man convinces her to release the psychic bubble she creates that freezes nearly every New Yorker at the end of the movie. He also saves her from getting shot by Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and gets hit by the sniper rifle bullet himself. At the end of the movie, Spidey recuperates, and Jean heads out of town (and possibly to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters upstate).

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’—Ending And Post-Credits Scene, Explained

Spider-Man: Brand New Day sees Tom Holland’s Peter Parker face his biggest challenge yet—loneliness, the film’s ending hinting at more.

Before Brand New Day, each chapter of Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy has grappled with Peter Parker’s identity, all three films introducing a dramatic shift to the status quo.

It’s been nearly five years since Spider-Man’s last big-screen adventure, but your friendly neighborhood webslinger is finally back.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” in theaters now, follows a Peter Parker (Tom Holland) who no longer has much of a life outside of his vigilante crime-fighting and keeping tabs on his loved ones (Zendaya, Jacob Batalon) from afar.

The movie’s biggest reveal involves the identity of the villain played by Sadie Sink — and plenty of questions remain about her future and what her appearance means for a certain fan-favorite mutant superhero team.

How The Punisher adds an extra layer to Spider-Man: Brand New Day

A lot of us awaiting Spider-Man: Brand New Day in India this Thursday and worldwide on Friday may be die-hard fans of the web slinger. But with every new addition to the Spider-Man franchise, the superhero is getting more and more embedded into the complicated world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

While Tom Holland's version of the wall-crawler was introduced amidst infighting Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, the fourth Spider-Man film, Brand New Day, puts the hero face-to-face with a street-level vigilante like The Punisher. Most Marvel fans may be up-to-date with all of Holland's Spider-Man appearances in the MCU, from Civil War to No Way Home. But just days before the release, many may still be clueless about The Punisher, essayed by Jon Bernthal, who is appearing on one of Marvel's films for the first time.

    ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Has A Post-Credits Scene, But There’s A Catch

What could very easily be the biggest box-office success of the year – until Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18 – is web-slinging its way into theaters today. Preview showings of Spider-Man: Brand New Day kick off today with the full release on Friday, July 31.

The movie is something of a reset: Peter Parker has erased his existence from the memories of everyone in the entire world, including MJ, Ned and the rest of the Avengers (though I’m not clear if this also worked on Doctor Strange).

Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Peter Parker is now an adult living completely alone after asking Doctor Strange to erase all memory of his identity from the world to save the multiverse. A solitary hero now, Peter has devoted himself utterly to being Spider-Man, protecting NYC while struggling with isolation and the consequences of his sacrifice.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day ending explained – Full spoilers, but does it set up Avengers: Doomsday?

The new Spidey outing is the last MCU film before the Avengers take on Doctor Doom.

It’s a Brand New Day for Spidey. After his multiverse antics and Avengers team-ups, Peter Parker is flying solo in New York in his latest MCU outing.

The fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film is a ground-level look at Spidey as he takes on villains, saves New Yorkers and tries to unravel a strange and mysterious transformation that’s causing him to go full spider without realising.

The hype surrounding Brand New Day is more feverish than any superhero film since the last Spider-Man film (Spidey is in a different league, though, so it’s hardly fair), partly thanks to the success of No Way Home.

Meet The Punisher, Spider-Man character who can change Peter Parker's brand new day

For nearly a decade, Tom Holland's Spider-Man has fought some of the biggest threats in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He has gone to space with the Avengers, battled Thanos, travelled across Europe to stop Mysterio and, most recently, saved the multiverse itself. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, however, Peter Parker's greatest challenge may not be another superpowered villain or an interdimensional crisis. Instead, it comes in the form of a man with no superpowers at all.

His arrival is one of the biggest talking points surrounding Brand New Day, and for good reason. Unlike Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus, the Punisher is not someone Spider-Man can simply defeat and move on. And we explain why.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day ending explained: What [SPOILER] really means for Peter

You could argue Tom Holland's Peter Parker had a pretty forgiving and easy life… until the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, that is. Every tragedy that hadn't befallen the wall-crawler before suddenly hit like a train in the span of a few days. The friendly neighborhood hero not only had to witness the death of Aunt May, but the whole world forgot he ever existed courtesy of a spell cast by Doctor Strange. That means Peter also lost his girlfriend, MJ, and his best friend, Ned Leeds.

Spider-Man had to move into an apartment all on his own, with no one to rely on, and that's exactly where Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up. Audiences see how the friendly neighborhood hero has decided to dedicate all of his time and energy to keeping New York safe, even if this comes at the cost of his own well-being. Fortunately, not everything is completely grim.

Who is [SPOILER] in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and how does she fit into the Marvel Universe?

When creating Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it feels like director Destin Daniel Cretton and Tom Holland got to play with a superhero sandbox larger than usual. Don't get me wrong, this is still Peter Parker's story. However, we knew beforehand that iconic characters from the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe were set to have a key role in the wall-crawler's latest film. Anti-heroes like Hulk and the Punisher were revealed in promotional trailers and material, yet there were still many surprises that Disney and Sony were holding back.

The wall-crawler's latest live-action adventure introduced audiences to two key Marvel characters, one of whom hadn't appeared in live-action before. But before we go any further, this is an official warning: There will be MAJOR spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day ahead. If you don't want any BIG surprises ruined, then it's better to watch the movie and return later for a breakdown of what truly happened.
