‘We seem to be on the back foot’ – Leclerc wary of Mercedes threat in Australia

Oscar Piastri impressed his home crowd as he led the two Mercedes drivers of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in just the second practice session of the season.

Oscar Piastri finished the first day of running in Australia at the top of the timesheets, beating the Mercedes duo of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in another eventful hour.

After FP1 saw some drivers face teething problems, a small group were ready to go at the pit lane exit for the day's second practice session, including reigning World Champion Lando Norris, who missed a sizable chunk of the opening session due to precautionary gearbox checks.

What we learned from first F1 2026 Friday at Australian GP

After a long pre-season, Formula 1's finally had its first proper day of 2026 at the Australian Grand Prix – which has given some big pointers for the season opener.

Ferrari and McLaren topped the two sessions – so pre-season favourite Mercedes was never fastest on Friday…so we're in for a surprise, right?

For now, whatever the classification says, nobody doubts that Mercedes is the class of the field. That was revealed by George Russell's impressive long run pace.

While FP2 was patchy in terms of the long run data, it showed Mercedes having the clear advantage with Russell able to run at a pace the rest couldn't match.

This is Yamba, wide beaches, gentle surf and a town that still has time to talk. Photo / Destination NSW

“You’ll notice people chat here,” Shane tells us on our first afternoon in Yamba.

He’s right. Over the next 24 hours, a dog walker stops to recommend a beach, a server laughs about regional food names, and the town’s dolphins seem keen to say hello.

    We fly into Gold Coast
Airport for my wife’s birthday in just before summer and drive two hours south to Yamba, a town that still feels like what Byron Bay used to be before it became too popular.

Perth's seven-wicket win over Brisbane Heat has guaranteed the Scorchers a spot in this year's WBBL finals.

Perth's win also ensured that the Renegades would be unable to defend their title, and left Brisbane with the first winless season in the competition's history.

The winner of the Sydney Sixers-Adelaide Strikers game on Sunday will take the final spot in the top four.

Beth Mooney has led Perth back into the WBBL finals, executing the perfect chase against Brisbane and ending Melbourne Renegades's title defence in the process.

    UNCHANGED SQUAD FOR HEAT

The WBBL Brisbane Heat have named an unchanged squad of 13 for tomorrow’s final regular season match against the Perth Scorchers at the WACA.

Allrounders Chinelle Henry and Sianna Ginger were both cleared to play despite being hit in the helmet in the Heat’s 23-run loss to the Sydney Thunder at Drummoyne Oval on Wednesday night.

Teenage allrounder Lily Bassingthwaighte made her WBBL debut against the Thunder, the fifth first-gamer for Brisbane this season.

Local Replacement Player Catherine White and pace bowler Bonnie Berry would make their WBBL debuts if included in the starting team at the bat flip tomorrow.

Beth Mooney has led Perth Scorchers back into the WBBL finals, executing the perfect chase against Brisbane Heat and ending Melbourne Renegades' title defence in the process.

Needing 165 for victory in a must-win game at the WACA on Saturday, Mooney hit an unbeaten 94 from 61 to help Perth reach the target with seven wickets and four balls to spare. The victory ensured the Scorchers would have a home final, knocked the Renegades out of the top four and handed the Heat the first winless season in WBBL history.
