Sri Lanka claim maiden T20I series win over West Indies

Sri Lanka Women rounded off their first-ever T20I series victory against West Indies with an emphatic nine-wicket win in Grenada on Tuesday, March 3. One-nil down, the hosts had an opportunity to level the series at best, after the first game fell prey to rain, but suffered from yet another poor batting display.

It was Sri Lanka’s first bilateral series win against West Indies in seven attempts. Perera was adjudged the Player of the Match, while Chamari Athapaththu bagged the Player of the Series award.

Brief Scores: West Indies 119/5 in 20 overs (Chinelle Henry 32*, Deandra Dottin 28, Inoka Ranaweera 2-16, Sugandika Kumari 2-32) lost to Sri Lanka 121/1 in 17.4 overs (Hasini Perera 52*, Imesha Dulani 34*, Afy Fletcher 1-14) by nine wickets.

West Indies 218 for 4 (Matthews 100, Taylor 38, Henry 32*, Madara 2-33) beat Sri Lanka 217 for 7 (Samarawickrama 70, Dilhari 45*, Matthews 2-33, Ramharack 2-39) by six wickets

Hayley Matthews' tenth ODI century led West Indies to a six-wicket victory in the final match of the series against Sri Lanka and gave them their first points in the new Women's Championship cycle.

Sri Lanka had already secured the series but couldn't clinch a whitewash as Matthews dominated: she started the match by removing opposite number Chamari Athapaththu in the first over of the contest and then compiled an 118-ball hundred, which took West Indies most of the way in their chase.

New Zealand captain Mitch Santner: "There was obviously a nice little period for us with the track and with the ball. They squeezed us a lot, I think we lost three wickets on 84 which is never ideal. The longer we could take it, myself and Cole [McConchie] were thinking we would try to get to 140, which kind of set it up for the last two or three overs. I guess 160 wasn't a bad total from there."

England stagger to 146‑9 in the end after they failed to build any sustained partnerships.

This might just be well short of a truly competitive total but they will hope the pitch does them some favours when they come out to bowl.

It's in the slot from Dushmantha Chameera and the England batter punishes him.

Sri Lanka have opted to chase against England in Pallekele, hoping to replicate their dominant victory over Australia here to kickstart their Super Eight campaign.

It was six days ago that Pathum Nissanka's unbeaten 100 saw the hosts chase down Australia's total of 181 with eight wickets and two overs to spare. And home skipper Dasun Shanaka is looking to utilise that confidence in this Group 2 encounter. "We've been chasing well in the past few occasions and happy to chase again," Shanaka said at the toss. "The boys are very confident playing here."

England looking to extend T20 success versus Sri Lanka

Moeen Ali says England have been "tentative" at T20 World Cup, wants Jos Buttler to "play the situation"; Harry Brook's side play all Super 8s games in Sri Lanka, a place where they enjoyed success ahead of tournament; watch England vs Sri Lanka live on Sky Sports on Sunday (9.30am start)

That is the message from captain Harry Brook as his side begin their Super 8s campaign against Sri Lanka on Sunday (live on Sky Sports from 9.30am) after a scratchy opening round in which they lost to West Indies and were pushed hard by three Associate nations.

England needed a clutch last over from Sam Curran in their opening game to beat Nepal by four runs, while they looked in danger of a shock defeat to debutants Italy in their final group fixture – one which would likely have seen them eliminated – before rallying.

Sri Lanka won the toss at the party at Premadasa and decided to bat first. Both, the hosts and Zimbabwe, are through to the Super Eight already, but for Sri Lanka it was important to get in their injury replacements.

The big one, of course, was Matheesha Pathirana, whose tournament ended with a calf injury sustained during the match against Australia. His replacement in the squad, Dilshan Madushanka, came straight into the XI. Also given a look-in was Pramod Madushan, the fast bowler who was already in the squad. In order to organise this virtual bowl-off between Madushan and Madushanka, Sri Lanka rested their lead fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.

Curran in rare air with T20I hat-trick

Phil Salt then led England's successful chase with 46 off 35 balls as the tourists clinched victory in a low-scoring match that had been reduced to 17-overs-a-side following rain.

On Wednesday, we will be exactly a month out from the next men's T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The arrangement is such that both Sri Lanka and Pakistan, who are contesting a three-match T20I series starting Wednesday, will be spending their entire group and Super Eights stages on the island (provided they both qualify for the Super Eights, of course). If Pakistan progress even further than that, they will continue plying Sri Lankan decks, and perhaps bring a semi-final or final to the country. Such is the state of South Asian geopolitics at present that we do not know where exactly the knockouts of this pinnacle T20 event will be played. But perhaps that is moot for now.

Sri Lanka into the T20 tri-series final thanks to Chameera

Pakistan await Sri Lanka in the T20 Tri-Series final after the latter's final-over victory in Rawalpindi

Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has snaffled 4-20 and stifled Pakistan in the final over as Sri Lanka breezed into the final of the T20 tri-series with a six-run victory.

Pakistan, who had already qualified for Saturday's final with three successive wins, were held to 7-178 on Thursday with captain Salman Ali Agha's career-best unbeaten 63 going in vain.

Opening batter Kamil Mishra's 76 off 48 balls had earlier anchored Sri Lanka to 5-184 in a game they had to win in order to reach the final instead of Zimbabwe.

    Sri Lanka 184 for 5 (Mishara 76, Mendis, 40, Abrar 2-28) beat Pakistan 178 for 7 (Salman 63, Usman 33, Chameera 4-20, Malinga 2-54) by six runs

Dushmantha Chameera held his nerve in a clutch final over to ensure Sri Lanka did not throw away a win they had spent the rest of the evening working for. He conceded three runs in the final over, building on a magnificent opening spell to deny Pakistan victory by six runs in a 184-run chase.

The stakes were higher for Sri Lanka than they were for Pakistan, with a victory required for a place in the final, or it would be Zimbabwe playing that game on Saturday. And Sri Lanka played with a hunger they have rediscovered since they finally won a game on Pakistan soil on Tuesday. Kusal Mendis and Kamil Mishara's 36-ball 66-run stand got them off to a flier, with Mishara ending up with 76 off 48 balls, and cameos lower down the order got them to 184.

Sikandar Raza’s side will look to return to winning ways as they take on Sri Lanka in their second game at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

The Lankans will also be hoping that Wanindu Hasaranga, who picked up a hamstring niggle in the second ODI against Pakistan earlier this month. They have called up Vijayakanth Viyaskanth from the India ‘A’ squad as back up for Hasaranga.

As per Artificial Intelligence, Sri Lanka will secure a commanding 29-run victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20I at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. A fluent 54 from Pathum Nissanka will help the Lankans post 185/6, while Wanindu Hasaranga’s three-wicket haul will dismantle the African nation for 156.

The Rawalpindi track offered true bounce and pace, and rewarded batters who played straight but punished mistimed shots. The outfield was quick, encouraging boundary scoring, while spinners found grip in the middle overs. Temperatures hovered around 32°C with light winds, and dew made its way in the second half, giving a slight advantage to the chasing side.
