    Socceroos forward Awer Mabil offered his trademark focus on Wednesday afternoon in Oakland speaking to the Australian media about this week’s clash against the United States. There was one distraction, however, he could not overcome.

    The winger lost his concentration when long-time SBS commentator David Basheer – in the US as part of the network’s coverage – asked a question during the press conference. “Sorry, David from SBS, right?” Mabil interjected. “I grew up watching you.”

    Australia U23 qualify for next stage of AFC U23 Asian Cup™ with come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Iraq

    Yaya Dukuly and Matthias Macallister scored in stoppage time as Australia lifted themselves from potential elimination to Group D winners in the space of an exhilarating four minutes.

    Head Coach Tony Vidmar made three changes from the side that was narrowly defeated by China. Giuseppe Bovalina, Luka Jovanovic and Jaylan Pearman came into the starting eleven, replacing Aydan Hammond, Mathias Macallister and Nathaniel Blair.

    The first half was spent in somewhat of a holding pattern, with both teams getting a feel for each other and the game.

    Australia had consecutive chances at the midway point of the first half. Yaya Dukuly was ruled narrowly offside after being played through on goal, before a shot from James Overy minutes later resulted in a corner. However, that would be the Olyroos' only sight on goal for the first stanza.

    South Korea lost 0-2 to Uzbekistan in the final Group C match of the 2026 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup at Prince Faisal bin Fakhd Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Jan. 13.

    South Korea was able to advance to the quarterfinals on its own just by drawing. However, it was a complete defeat. Fortunately, Lebanon advanced to the quarterfinals as it produced an extraordinary 1-0 victory over Iran. South Korea advanced to the tournament as second place in Group C, beating Lebanon (1 win, 2 losses and 3 points) with one win, one draw and one loss (four points). Uzbekistan scored two wins and one draw (7 points) in three group matches to advance to the quarterfinals, ranking first in the group.
