Stefanovic takes aim at TV’s ‘beige’ hosts after Nine departure

Karl Stefanovic has rounded on his former industry for promoting “beige” broadcasters after Nine and radio company ARN ousted him following a string of incidents culminating in a controversial interview with British extreme-right activist Tommy Robinson.

The former Today show host received the backing of broadcaster Piers Morgan, who has also largely abandoned the mainstream media for podcasting, in an hour-long interview released on Wednesday where the British commentator accused Nine of “cancel culture” and failing to “stand up to the mob”.

“By the end of this week, Australia will be completely united behind you,” Morgan said.

In the podcast, released on Wednesday evening but recorded in the French resort town of Cannes last week, Stefanovic said that free-to-air TV networks had promoted “beige” personalities out of fear of backlash from advertisers, even as he praised several former colleagues by name.

Karl Stefanovic is set to be dumped from his radio show just days after he was ousted from Nine, the ABC understands.

Stefanovic and Eddie McGuire had co-hosted The Long Weekend, an ARN Media show that launched last month.

Stefanovic's radio axing came following an interview with far-right extremist Tommy Robinson on Stefanovic's independent podcast, which prompted significant backlash before it was taken offline.

Karl Stefanovic is free! To delete the podcast he made in the name of free speech

It is surely one of the greatest hustles of our time – the way that podcast bros declare themselves freedom of speech warriors. Karl Stefanovic attempted this swindle on Friday, when, having been sacked from the Today show, he declared himself “free”.

When Stefanovic accepted the Logie for most popular television personality in 2011, he paid tribute to legendary political journalist Laurie Oakes.

“He’s the reason why I’m in this business and why I want to be in this business of journalists for the rest of my life,” Stefanovic said.

But Woodward or Bernstein he ain’t. On the contrary, he has undermined the sort of excellent journalism of which he is incapable – notably exposés, in this newspaper, of neurosurgeon Charlie Teo, and accused war criminal Ben-Roberts Smith.

In 25 years as the face of Channel Nine, Karl Stefanovic made international news twice. Once when he was crowned “hero of 2014” for wearing the same suit for a year to highlight sexism, and this week when he was dumped from his $2.8m contract for embracing far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

The journey between the two extremes is what the Australian television industry is grappling with as the jovial, popular host of the middle-of-the-road breakfast show took a sharp turn to the right and blew up his $2.8m network television career.

Today show host Karl Stefanovic to leave Nine after Tommy Robinson podcast fallout

Nine is negotiating terms for longtime Today host Karl Stefanovic to leave the network following his incendiary podcast interview with far-right British activist Tommy Robinson, potentially defusing a major advertiser boycott.

Nine made the decision on Wednesday evening following a series of crisis meetings at its North Sydney headquarters.

The 51-year-old was in London when told the network wanted to part ways following weeks of worsening tensions. It is unclear whether the network’s highest-paid presenter will receive any form of exit payment.

The decision clears the way for a major shake-up of the Australian breakfast television landscape, but also risks attracting the ire of Stefanovic’s conservative backers, including One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.

Karl Stefanovic's move to outsider politics follows a well-worn lucrative path

There ain't nothing new about audience panic: when the baked-in viewers of a show like Nine's Today start to dwindle, any halfway competitive presenter might pull the panic lever to get some attention. That usually involves animals, sick kids or celebrities.

And there ain't nothing new about grievance merchants attempting to leverage genuine community disaffection and anxiety into something that can be monetised. That goes back as far as Cleon of Athens, who turned Athenian anger about the "elites" into a very personally useful populist movement of resentment.

Stefanovic’s future at Nine under a cloud amid emergency meetings

Today host Karl Stefanovic’s future with Nine is under a cloud after online activists vowed to target him over his sympathetic interview with British far-right anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson on a now-deleted episode of his podcast.

The episode, which was removed from sites including YouTube and Spotify less than 12 hours after it debuted, drew an angry backlash from the activist group Mad F—ing Witches, who vowed to target Stefanovic and Nine in the same way it did advertisers on shock jock Kyle Sandilands’ former show.

Sources familiar with the matter, who were not authorised to speak publicly, said that Nine executives had held lengthy discussions about the podcast in the day since it aired, but had not reached a decision.

Revealed: The Russian Neo-Nazi Network Pushing ‘White Lives Matter’ Division in Britain – Promoted by Tommy Robinson

As riots spread across Belfast, Tommy Robinson promoted a movement founded by a sanctioned Russian oligarch, which has pushed white supremacist propaganda about the death of Henry Nowak

A network of Russian far-right extremists steeped in neo-Nazi antisemitism – created under the umbrella of a sanctioned oligarch close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and now openly promoted by Tommy Robinson – has been driving ‘White Lives Matter’ propaganda over the murder of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak, Byline Times can reveal.

The organisation promoted by Robinson is part of a wider Russian state-linked campaign to sow division across the UK and Europe,

A Byline Times review of X and Telegram posts by the Brotherhood of Academists, a Russian ultranationalist youth movement which operates under the leadership of the US-sanctioned Tsargrad Society, reveals that the group pushed a white supremacist framing of Nowak’s killing on 20 May – the day media coverage of his killer’s trial intensified.
