Hundreds of new electric vehicle chargers will be rolled out in suburban Sydney and regional blackspots and more funding will be directed to businesses to electrify their heavy vehicle fleets as part of a new strategy to keep up with a surge in EV sales in Australia amid the war against Iran.

EV sales have jumped dramatically since the outbreak of the war against Iran prompted a spike in global fuel prices. Sales climbed by 50 per cent in March, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, and EV rentals have also boomed.

Electric truck development and building more stations to charge them will be core pillars of a state’s revamped electric vehicle strategy designed to ease the pressure of rising fuel costs.

The New South Wales government unveiled its 2026 EV strategy on Tuesday in an effort to give confidence to motorists hesitant about switching from their increasingly pricey petrol cars.

Rolling out more fast-charging stations in regional and remote areas to encourage EV take-up among non-city dwellers will be one of the top priorities in the $100m package.

Second-hand EV sales more than double as drivers avoid petrol shock

Sales of second-hand electric vehicles more than doubled in the last month as rising fuel prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East sent motorists looking for alternatives to petrol and diesel cars.

Figures compiled for automotive dealerships recorded a 138 per cent rise in sales between February and March – and a massive slump in supply – with Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y the most popular cars on the second-hand market. EVs made by MG and BYD were also popular purchases.

“I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force. All the US is asking for is a place called Greenland,” he said. “You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say no and we will remember.”

Global shares have fallen for a fourth day and some measures ‍of market stress remain high after a rout in global bonds and US threats to acquire Greenland kept investors on edge ahead of President Donald Trump's Davos speech.

Fears of foreign selling of US assets – the so-called "Sell America" trade that emerged after 2025's "Liberation Day" tariff announcements in April – gripped markets as Wall Street tumbled more than two per cent overnight and the US dollar suffered its biggest fall in over a month.

MILWAUKEE — With the Lakers leading by as many as 31 points in Saturday's 119-95 rout of the Bucks, the only drama of the evening came after the final buzzer, when Lakers players tried to secure the game ball to present to their rookie teammate after he scored his first NBA points.

After Lakers rookie Adou Thiero scored four points, including a raucous dunk in the final minute, teammate Jarred Vanderbilt held on to the game ball when the game ended and held it under his left arm as he exchanged postgame pleasantries with several Bucks players.

Giannis Antetokoumpo’s Heartwarming Gesture for Lakers Rookie Adou Thiero Goes Viral

On a night when the Milwaukee Bucks hoped to build momentum, the script flipped dramatically. After an overtime win against the Charlotte Hornets, fans at Fiserv Forum walked into Saturday’s matchup expecting another step forward.

Instead, October 15 turned into a long, frustrating evening for Milwaukee. The Lakers rolled to a dominant 119–95 victory, but even in defeat, one moment that Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo sparked has taken over social media for all the right reasons.

The Lakers entered the contest shorthanded with forward Rui Hachimura sidelined due to calf soreness. In response, the coaching staff made a bold call to activate rookie Adou Thiero, who had been working his way back from a knee injury suffered months earlier. The matchup against Milwaukee marked Thiero’s long-awaited NBA debut.

Lakers’ Adou Thiero reacts to Giannis making sure he got his game ball after ref controversy

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Adou Thiero got the game ball for his first NBA points thanks to a nice gesture from Giannis.

On Saturday evening, the Los Angeles Lakers continued their winning ways with a road win over the Milwaukee Bucks, pushing their record on the young 2025-26 NBA season to an impressive 10-4 in the process. The Lakers are now awaiting the return of LeBron James, whom they hope will help them reach the next level with this team.

Due to the blowout nature of Saturday's game in Milwaukee, Lakers head coach JJ Redick was able to put some of his reserves in toward the end of the game, including rookie Adou Thiero, who scored his first NBA basket in the win. After the game, the Lakers tried to secure the game ball for Thiero to hold onto, but for some strange reason, the referees on the court were not allowing it. However, Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo then stepped in and made sure Thiero got the ball in a heartwarming moment.
