Amazon stock soars 15% as e-commerce giant's AWS cloud business booms in 'home run' quarter

What's behind the move: The e-commerce and cloud giant topped second quarter expectations as accelerating cloud growth at Amazon Web Services (AWS) helped drive strong results. Amazon also said its AI and custom chip businesses have each surpassed a $25 billion annualized revenue run rate.

AWS generated $42.2 billion in second quarter revenue, up 36.7% year over year, fueled by strength across both its core cloud business and AI services.

"We added over $4.6 billion in revenue quarter over quarter — about 80% more than our largest increase ever. Our backlog stands at $496 billion, growing triple digits year over year," Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the company's earnings call.

    Jeff Bezos Is World's Third-Richest Again—Overtaking Google’s Sergei Brin

Jeff Bezos on Friday became the world’s third-richest person once again, reclaiming the ranking from Google co-founder Sergey Brin as Amazon’s stock accelerated at its fastest pace in four years, following a hotter-than-expected earnings report.

Shares of Amazon surged about 14% shortly after trading opened on Friday, pacing the stock’s largest single-day gain since April 24, 2015 (14.1%).

That burst followed Amazon’s quarterly earnings on Thursday, in which the firm reported $206.6 billion in revenue boosted by a 37% year-over-year surge in cloud sales to $42.2 billion, exceeding Wall Street’s estimates of $197 billion and $40.5 billion, respectively, according to FactSet.

Amazon even raised its spending forecast this year to $220 billion, up from $200 billion, as CEO Andy Jassy said a majority of Amazon’s capital expenditures would go toward matching demand for AI, noting the firm was “unusually well-positioned for this AI inflection.”

Amazon's AWS posts fastest growth since 2021, citing AI and chip demand

Amazon's cloud segment grew faster than analysts had predicted in the second quarter, with revenue increasing almost 37%, marking the strongest expansion since 2021.

The digital commerce company said in a Thursday statement that Amazon Web Services (AWS) generated $42.23 billion in revenue during the June quarter. Analysts surveyed by StreetAccount had been looking for $40.54 billion. The growth rate accelerated from 28% in the first quarter.

AWS' artificial intelligence business and the unit's chips each brought in over $25 billion in annualized revenue, more than doubling from last year.

Amazon remains a larger force in cloud computing than any other company. Microsoft said Wednesday that revenue from Azure and other cloud services were growing 43%, compared with 40% in the March quarter. The Windows company touted over $100 billion in revenue from Azure and other cloud services over the past 12 months. The equivalent figure for Amazon is $148.40 billion.

South Korean stock market at three-month low as AI sell-off intensifies

Samsung and SK Hynix fall by more than 10% amid renewed fears over AI spending and Chinese competition

The sell-off in AI stocks has intensified, driving South Korea’s stock market down to its lowest level in three months.

Investors continued to ditch chip stocks on Tuesday, amid rising concerns about the huge amount of borrowing among AI companies to fund their datacentre expansion plans.

The South Korean semiconductor companies SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics fell by more than 10%, dragging the country’s Kospi share index down by 11.5% to its lowest point since mid-April.

US chip stocks extended their recent losses when Wall Street opened on Tuesday, with Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Sandisk, Western Digital Corp and Seagate Technology all down by more than 4%.

Chip stocks slide in US and Asia as AI jitters rattle investors

Shares in major chip firms have fallen sharply in the US and Asia as a sell-off in artificial intelligence-related stocks deepened.

Trading on South Korea's benchmark Kospi index was paused temporarily on Tuesday morning after sliding by 8%. It fell further after the 20-minute halt was lifted, closing 10.8% lower.

The slump was led by technology firms, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both falling by more than 13%.

It comes after AI chip giant Nvidia fell by 5% in New York on Monday, meaning it lost its position as the world's most valuable listed company to Apple.

The tech-heavy Kospi has been halted multiple times so far this year under a stock market mechanism known as a circuit breaker, which is designed to calm panic selling.

KRX activates sell-side sidecar for KOSPI on sharp decline

Korea's bourse operator on Wednesday activated a sell-side sidecar for the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) after the index fell sharply, led by tech losses.

Program trading in KOSPI-listed shares was suspended for five minutes around 10:55 a.m., according to the Korea Exchange (KRX).

The decline came as retail investors sold off large-cap stocks, including SK hynix, as investors question whether massive spending on artificial intelligence (AI) will generate returns enough to justify elevated tech firms' valuations.

A sell-side sidecar is triggered when the KOSPI 200 Futures Index falls 5 percent or more for at least one minute.

How Microsoft Stock Can Climb To $600

Microsoft (MSFT) shares are currently priced around $410 each, boasting a market capitalization of $3.0 trillion and a trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio estimated at approximately 24.3. This valuation is considerably conservative when compared to its three-year average ratio of 33 and its historical peak of 48, reached in late 2017. Although the existing market price indicates a downside relative to historical standards, the ascent to a $600 share price is fueled by genuine earnings growth instead of a speculative return to higher valuation multiples.

The key driver for this anticipated growth is revenue compounding, underpinned by substantial visibility into enterprise demand. Microsoft reported a growth rate of 17.9% over the previous twelve months, surpassing its three-year compound annual growth rate of 15.3%. (Refer to Microsoft’s financials). This growth pattern is supported by the company’s shift toward consumption-based cloud services and its strong remaining performance obligations, creating a highly visible groundwork for long-term growth. While Microsoft captures a significant portion of enterprise expenditures, the broader sector transformation also affects its competitors. 1 Software Stock to Buy Before It Doubles, According to Select Analysts

2026 has not been kind to software stocks. Fears that more companies will use generative AI products for a broader set of software needs have led many analysts to rerate earnings multiples for companies that rely on the typically predictable software-as-a-service (SaaS) model.

One of the hardest-hit companies in the sector is Atlassian (TEAM +8.26%), which saw its stock drop almost 90% from its all-time high. Shares have started to recover, but one analyst still sees significant upside. In fact, Piper Sandler's team thinks the stock can double from here, recently setting a share price target of $175.

That's not an unreasonable expectation either, as Atlassian benefits from high retention rates and multiple tailwinds that can drive earnings growth through the end of the decade, despite the challenge posed by artificial intelligence (AI).

Atlassian Shares Jump 8% on Friday, Eyes on Monday for AI Interest

Atlassian shares jumped 8.16% to $87.46 on Friday, snapping back from earlier losses, while the rest of tech stumbled. Still, TEAM closed the week down roughly 4.5% from where it stood at $91.60 after the May 8 session.

Timing is key. Investors want to see if Atlassian’s AI push turns product news into sales, as buyers look at budgets and compare Atlassian against bigger software rivals and new project-management tools.

Atlassian shares aren’t trading in the regular session on Saturday because Nasdaq’s normal market hours are Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern. That puts the focus on Monday’s open to see if Friday’s bounce continues.

Intel's stock soars 20% as results top estimates, with chipmaker showing signs of growth

Intel reported first-quarter earnings Thursday that blew past Wall Street's expectations, as the struggling chipmaker shows signs of a revival.

Here's how the company did, compared with estimates from analysts polled by LSEG:

Intel has been a Wall Street darling of late, with its stock up more than 80% this year as of Thursday's close, after soaring 84% in 2025. The chipmaker has been championed by the Trump administration, which turned the U.S. government into the largest shareholder last year as part of an effort to bring chip manufacturing stateside. Nvidia and SoftBank also invested billions in Intel.

But the business, which fell way behind rivals Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices during the early stages of the artificial intelligence boom, hasn't been seeing much momentum.

Intel stock soars on Q1 earnings beat, strong outlook

Intel (INTC) stock rocketed more than 16% higher in after-hours trading following a first quarter earnings report that beat analysts’ expectations on the top and bottom lines and provided better-than-anticipated Q2 guidance on strong data center sales.

Intel said it expects revenue of between $13.8 billion and $14.8 billion for the second quarter. Wall Street was anticipating $13.03 billion.

For Q1, Intel saw adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.29 on revenue of $13.6 billion. Wall Street was anticipating EPS of $0.01 and revenue of $12.36 billion, according to Bloomberg analyst consensus data.

The company saw EPS of $0.13 and revenue of $12.67 billion in the same quarter last year.

    Why Palantir Stock Just Popped

Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) stock jumped 5% through 9:45 a.m. ET Monday after Wedbush analyst Dan Ives reiterated that he still has an outperform rating on the government IT contractor, and still believes the stock will hit $230 within a year.

From its current stock price, that would work out to a 45% profit.

Palantir provides IT services, focusing on artificial intelligence, to a host of government agencies, including the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as international defense ministries, healthcare systems, and law enforcement organizations.
