Sydney’s Oxford Street is gearing up for its biggest party of the year – the 48th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. A night of dancing, celebration and copious amounts of glitter, the parade will see more than 10,000 people march proudly down the street across 160 floats.
But once the colour and crowds of Mardi Gras fade for another year, Oxford Street will be left to grapple with challenges that have been reshaping the street for years.
Last year, around 300,000 partygoers attended the event, generating $38 million for the local economy.
Among Oxford Street traders counting down the days is sequin-filled menswear boutique Daly Male. A stalwart of the LGBTQIA+ scene, the store is celebrating 40 years as one of the strip’s most recognisable retailers.

Protesters who marched along Oxford Street in Sydney’s first Mardi Gras parade in 1978 urged hundreds of spectators to join them with the rallying cry: “Out of the bars and onto the streets.”
The route of those marchers, known as the 78ers, who sparked the long-running Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, is going from the streets into the history books in recognition of the parade’s immense historical and cultural significance to Australia.
On Thursday, the federal government will announce it has added the two-kilometre Mardi Gras route through inner Sydney to the National Heritage Register, alongside the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, days before more than 10,000 people march in the 48th annual parade on Saturday.

The Sydney Mardi Gras parade route will be protected for generations by a heritage listing for its enduring cultural value and significance to the struggle for LGBTQI rights in Australia.
The two-kilometre stretch through the heart of Sydney received the nod from the Australian Heritage Council on Thursday, almost half a century after the inaugural protest was met with police violence in 1978.
