Why Canadian airline strikes shut down the whole system — and how other countries avoid it

Over the August long weekend, roughly 250,000 WestJet passengers had their flights cancelled when the airline’s flight attendants walked out over pay, including compensation for ground duties performed before takeoff and after landing.

Less than a year earlier, an Air Canada strike grounded the country’s largest carrier for about 60 hours. The two disputes were different in their details, but both exposed how quickly a strike at a major airline can disrupt the wider air-travel system.

I’ve spent years studying how airlines and their unions collide, and in Canada the pattern is becoming familiar. Once an airline strike begins, there is little institutional middle ground between widespread disruption and government intervention. Other countries show this is not the only way to manage a strike.

CLC urges Ottawa to repeal – not ‘codify’ – power to end legal strikes

'The government is asking the wrong question,' says president Bea Bruske amid Canada Labour Code amid consultations

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is warning federally regulated employers that a second round of Canada Labour Code consultations could entrench, rather than eliminate, the labour minister's power to end lawful strikes.

The CLC's second submission to the Code review renews its call to repeal section 107, the provision allowing the labour minister to order employees back to work or refer disputes to binding arbitration.

The particular section reads: “The Minister, where the Minister deems it expedient, may do such things as to the Minister seem likely to maintain or secure industrial peace and to promote conditions favourable to the settlement of industrial disputes or differences and to those ends the Minister may refer any question to the Board or direct the Board to do such things as the Minister deems necessary.”

US launches 'heavy' strikes on Iran after attempted attack on American troops

The US military says it launched "heavy" strikes against Iran on Wednesday in retaliation for attempted Iranian ballistic missile attacks on American forces.

Centcom said it hit "dozens" of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in response to Tuesday's firing by Iran on US bases in Jordan and at ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest hostilities came a day after the conflict expanded, with the first publicly announced joint US-Saudi strikes targeting Iranian proxies in Iraq.

When the US and Israel launched military strikes on Iran in February, President Donald Trump said the war would last only a few weeks, but it has gone on for five months with no end in sight.

US launches fresh strikes on Iran after days-long pause, amid fears the war is widening

The US military is saying is has finished its “heavy wave of strikes” against Iran.

Central Command said in a statement posted on X that it struck “dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran, including military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities”.

It said the two hours of strikes were in response to Iran’s attempted missile attacks on US forces in the region and “aimed to further diminish threats posed by Iran and its proxies to American forces, commercial shipping, and neighboring Gulf countries”.

US strikes ‘dozens’ of targets in Iran, hours after Trump’s expletive-laden threat

Baghdad: The US military launched strikes on Iranian targets, hours after President Donald Trump warned that a retaliatory attack was imminent after Iran launched a barrage of missiles toward American forces in the Middle East.

US Central Command announced the strikes – which began at 10am on Thursday (AEST) – on social media and said they were “a powerful response to yesterday’s attempted Iranian attack”.

“We’re going to be hitting them very hard, because it’s our turn to hit ’em. They know it’s coming, they’re asking us not to do it,” Trump had told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon (US time).

Tehran launches more strikes after second round of US attacks in southern Iran

The US and Iran again traded strikes in exchanges that continued into Thursday, as observers reported a "dramatic" drop in the number of ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.

The US says it hit 90 military targets, some near the Strait. Iran says 14 people have been killed in the past two days.

State media also reported that targets near the Bushehr nuclear power plant were hit, citing the deputy governor of the province. The US has not commented on the latest strikes.

Iran said it targeted US assets in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar in response. Later on Thursday, Tehran launched more strikes on sites in Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq, state-linked media reported.

‘It was back-to-back explosions’: Iranians recall 48 hours of terror after US attack on port cities

Residents in Bandar Abbas and Sirik regions describe communities in fear and ‘feeling abandoned’ after US strikes

Residents in southern Iran have described two nights of fear this week after explosions shook coastal communities as the US launched fresh strikes on targets including the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Sirik.

US Central Command confirmed the attacks, saying they were carried out to “further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the strait of Hormuz”.

For residents in Posht-e Shahr, Bandar Abbas, back-to-back explosions marked another night of terror as they scrambled to check on friends and family. Noor, a teacher who lives near the fishing pier, said this week’s strikes were stronger than most in recent months.

The United States and Iran have exchanged strikes against targets in the Middle East, underscoring rising tensions that threaten the interim deal between the two nations to stop the war.

The US launched fresh strikes on Iranian military infrastructure near the Strait of Hormuz early this morning, saying the action was in response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping.

Iran then launched missile and drone strikes targeting US allies Kuwait and Bahrain, prompting the US to launch a second round of air strikes, and Iran to return fire.

Fresh hostilities in Gulf suggest US-Iran memorandum was too broadly worded

A new round of escalating strikes between Iran and the US has continued, further undermining the fragile interim peace agreement between the two countries, and prompting Donald Trump to threaten violence that would ensure Iran “will no longer exist”.

On Sunday, Tehran launched drone and missile attacks against Bahrain and Kuwait after new US strikes on sites in southern Iran, and threatened a “complete halt” to negotiations to end the war. Trump said that a moment might come soon when he abandoned talks and the US would “militarily finish the job”.

No immediate reports of damage after Bahrain hit by ‘number of drones’ as ship in strait of Hormuz also targeted

Bahrain said it was attacked by Iran with drones on Saturday, apparently in response to overnight US strikes on Iran. A ship in the strait of Hormuz was also attacked.

Bahrain’s foreign ministry said a “number of drones” were launched at the country, though there were no immediate reports of damage. It condemned the attack and described it as a “flagrant threat to the security of citizens and residents”.

No damage or casualties were reported in the attack on a tanker in the strait of Hormuz. No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but Iran was suspected to be behind it.

US launches new Iran strikes over attack on ship that Trump says violated ceasefire

Washington/Dubai: The US military attacked Iran in response to an Iranian drone strike on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, with each country accusing the other of violating terms of a ceasefire agreed on last week.

US Central Command said aircraft struck missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites on Saturday, later publishing a grainy black-and-white video of an explosion labelled “unclassified.” A US official reported the operation had concluded.

Iran said a projectile struck the area around a pier in Sirik in southern Iran, and that Iranian naval forces responded by striking US military targets in the region. Tehran did not provide details about what may have been hit.

No safe harbour: Ukrainian drones strike Russian warship in the Baltic for the first time

This week, Ukrainian one-way attack drones struck the Russian corvette RFS Boiky in Kronstadt naval base, more than 1,100 km from the Ukrainian border. The attack signals another extension of Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign and carries implications well beyond the conflict itself.

At 06:35 local time on 3 June 2026, drones operated by the 1st Separate Centre of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces struck the corvette Boiky in the Veleshchynsky dry dock at Kronstadt. The historic naval base is situated on Kotlin Island, roughly 20 km west of Saint Petersburg at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland. The attack formed part of a wider set of strikes in the region that morning.
