April Flight Turmoil Slams Asia Pacific's Busiest Aviation Hubs in 2026

April flight turmoil slams Asia Pacific's major airports as severe storms and air traffic control failures cascade across Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore in 2026, with monsoon season approaching.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Tokyo Haneda, Hong Kong International, and Singapore Changi are experiencing unprecedented operational strain as early April 2026 brings coordinated weather disruptions and air traffic control failures. Severe thunderstorms combined with systemic ATC workstation failures triggered the region's most significant travel chaos in recent years, affecting over 3,000 flights and stranding thousands of passengers across Asia Pacific's most critical aviation gateways during the first week of April.

Powerful storm systems swept across North and East Asia beginning April 5, 2026, creating cascading operational failures at the region's most congested hubs. Pre-dawn thunderstorms and dramatically reduced visibility forced widespread runway capacity reductions. On April 5 alone, major airports in China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Singapore recorded thousands of delays and cancellations as weather conditions deteriorated simultaneously across multiple time zones.

Raducanu’s failings resurface as Britain suffer bitter United Cup loss to Greece

Great Britain fell to a bitter 2-0 loss in their decisive United Cup tie against Greece in the round-robin group stage as Emma Raducanu fought hard to overcome her injury-ravaged preparation for the new season before fading badly in her first match of the year, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 against Maria Sakkari in her first match of the year.

Raducanu’s defeat had been preceded by a courageous performance from the British No 5 Billy Harris, Jack Draper’s injury replacement, who played one of the best matches of his career before falling 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) to the former No 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Emma Raducanu withdraws from United Cup tie against Naomi Osaka as GB start campaign

Emma Raducanu withdrew from her match against Naomi Osaka as Great Britain started their United Cup campaign with a 2-1 group-stage win against Japan in Australia.

The British number one has not played since October and pulled out of two exhibition matches in the United States in December because of a minor foot issue.

Her withdrawal against Osaka in Perth comes in the lead up to the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on 18 January.

"I have to be honest, she was very close," GB team captain Tim Henman told Australian broadcaster Nine prior to the tie.

"It wasn't an easy decision. She had been building up and practising really well. But we just felt this morning it was a little bit too early."

Naomi Osaka survived a welcome test in her United Cup opener as Japan pushed Great Britain to the brink in Perth, where Emma Raducanu was a late scratching.

The two-time Australian Open champion beat Katie Swan 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 to level their tie at 1-1, before the Brits sealed the rubber in a match tiebreak.

Swan stepped in for Raducanu at late notice and pushed the four-time major winner for almost two hours, before Osaka delivered Japan their first United Cup point in their tournament debut.
