Getting a TV show made isnât easy. OK, so youâve got an interesting idea and some good scripts â but a network or streaming platform will have many further questions. How much will it cost to make, which age/demographic will enjoy it, can it be distilled in a grabby one-line summary, could it recoup investment by running to multiple seasons? For whatever reason, I never reviewed the first season of “Sugar,” which I’d stopped watching before its late-season big reveal — the detective (Colin Farrell as John Sugar) is an alien. Had that happened earlier in the story I might have hung on, but strictly as a production, I’d found its brand of neo-noir to be mannered, gimmicky, obvious, overdirected (by Fernando Meirelles, the Brazilian director of the fine “City of Men”) and, as you may have surmised, off-putting.
This is by way of announcing that the second season arrives Friday on Apple TV and that I like it very much. The stylistic eccentricities have been dialed back, including the use of old Hollywood film clips to reflect the action and possibly the thoughts of its main character, a cinephile from space, who is both practicing and enacting the work of a private detective. He reads American Cinematographer; he takes the Paramount studio tour, then takes it again.

I wrote that two years ago when this little Apple TV neo-noir series about a space-alien P.I. ended its initial eight-episode run. Chances of a second season seemed slim on account of the broader mixed reception to the series’ late-season twist: the old-school-noir-obsessed John Sugar is actually an alien sent to Earth with a bunch of other aliens to blend into human society, observe, and report back to the homeworld. But once the initial aversion to the twist died down, it seems the powers that be over at Apple recognized that some shows need a whole-ass first season under their belt before they come into their own.

Thieves made a break for 413,793 units of the company’s new F1 line bars which could cause shortage before Easter
A large shipment of KitKat bars was stolen while in transit to distributors, a major candy crime right before the Easter holiday that could cause shortages for customers.
The truck carrying 413,793 units of a “new chocolate rangeâ€, about 12 tons of chocolate bars, was pilfered while driving through Europe on 26 March, Agence France-Presse reported.
A spokesperson for Nestlé, KitKat’s parent company, confirmed the theft to the Guardian, adding that the company is investigating the theft with local authorities and supply chain partners.
Swiss food giant Nestlé says about 12 tons, or 413,793 candy bars, of its KitKat chocolate brand were stolen after leaving its production site in Italy earlier this week for Poland.
The company, based in Vevey, Switzerland, said in a statement Friday that “the vehicle and its load are still nowhere to be found.”
The shipment of the crunchy bars, made of waffles covered with chocolate, disappeared last week while en route between production and distribution locations. The chocolate bars were to be distributed throughout Europe.
The missing candy bars could enter unofficial sales channels across European markets, the company said, but if this does happen, all products can be traced using the unique batch code assigned to individual bars.
Thieves in Poland have stolen 12 tonnes of KitKat chocolates, according to Nestlé.
