Swatch stores close for second day in Liverpool and Manchester

Swatch stores in Manchester and Liverpool were shut for a second day after queues built up again, with shoppers keen to buy a new £335 pocket watch.

They were first closed by the Swiss firm on Saturday "due to safety considerations", along with its shops in Birmingham, Sheffield, Glasgow, Cardiff and London.

In a social media post after crowds gathered at branches worldwide, Swatch asked people "not to rush to our stores in large numbers" and said the items – which have been resold online for up to £16,000 – would "remain available for several months".

Some have criticised the company, saying the watches should be available on its website and police resources had been unnecessarily diverted.

‘It was like a mosh pit’: Swatch closes stores as watch launch causes crowding and scuffles

Paris police used teargas on Saturday and UK shops stayed shut on Sunday after rush for Royal Pop timepieces

Swatch closed its stores in the UK and in some cities in Europe and the US at the weekend after the launch of a limited-edition watch caused chaos.

Shoppers waited throughout the night, and in some cases for several days, hoping to buy the Royal Pop timepieces – made in collaboration with the luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet – on Saturday.

But police were called when huge crowds descended on stores in Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.

A dispersal order was put in place in Birmingham, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Cardiff and issued with a Section 35 dispersal notice, and police dogs were deployed at the Battersea power station and Westfield shopping centres in London to tackle the chaos.

Want an AP Royal Oak for $630? There’s a catch

It’s a new watch, and also a sign of the times: a $50,000 timepiece offered for $630.

For years, luxury watch brands have lifted their prices year-on-year, which delivered revenue growth until demand fell; sales of Swiss watches have dropped for two years in a row.

Swatch Is Officially Collaborating With Audemars Piguet

There is nothing quite like a Swatch tease. In the watch world, it has always been the joker in the school playground who aces their exams. So last weekend, when I saw a screenshot of a newspaper ad, a familiar Swatch-induced sensation came over me; the powers that be in Biel/Bienne were up to MoonSwatch-levels of no good again.

A few cryptic social media posts soon followed (wait, is that a lanyard?), quickly drawing assumptions online that it would be another Swatch brand but which one? Longines? Breguet? Maybe this was the moment to shine for Jaques Droz? Or, was the Swatch x Seamaster about to come to fruition?

It's Official: Swatch Confirms Its Next MoonSwatch Successor with the Maker of the Royal Oak

Swatch and Audemars Piguet will release a new watch called the Royal Pop on Saturday, May 16. But it might not look like the MoonSwatch.

It’s official. Swatch and Audemars Piguet have collaborated on a new watch called the “Royal Pop,” set to release Saturday, May 16.

The brands shared the news on social media, following intense speculation earlier this week.

While the scope of the release remains vague for now, Swatch has already dropped a few clues that suggest a radically different timepiece to anything we’ve seen yet.

For starters, it probably won’t be a wristwatch like the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch or Scuba Fifty Fathoms made in collaboration with Blancpain.

Swatch Is Finally About to Upstage the MoonSwatch

A Royal Oak collab is definitely on the way. But what will it look like?

In 2022, Swatch collaborated with sister brand Omega to launch the MoonSwatch. This BioCeramic take on the iconic, space-traveling, luxury chronograph was a sensation, to say the least. Swatch sold over a million of them in its first year, with the MoonSwatch becoming the rare horological object to cross over into the broader culture.

In the past four years, Swatch has released countless MoonSwatch variations, effectively bludgeoning the collab to the point of irrelevance. The brand also collaborated with another member of the Swatch Group, Blancpain, on a BioCeramic version of the legendary Fifty Fathoms dive watch in 2023. The Scuba Fifty Fathoms has its fans, including yours truly, but it failed to ignite anything close to the excitement we saw with the MoonSwatch.

Is There Another MoonSwatch Type Collaboration on the Way?

Swatch is teasing something big for May 16th. It started over the weekend when a pair of newspaper advertisements with small bits of dials and a movement appeared in The Guardian. The ads seemed to suggest that Swatch was cooking up something similar to the MoonSwatch, a miracle series of high-low collaborations with Omega that caught fire in the industry. On Wednesday morning, Swatch shared a video with clues as to who this next partner may be. Which has us asking: Is there really about to be a Swatch-made version of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak?!

All the signs seem to suggest that the Royal Oak is the next watch that Swatch will translate to the masses. The teaser video posted this morning flashes the word “Royal” in AP’s distinctive font followed by “Pop.” The use of bright colors suggests there will be a pop art spin on the recognizable Royal Oak. (Representatives for Swatch and Audemars Piguet declined to comment.)

Is Swatch teasing a Royal Oak collaboration with Audemars Piguet?

The cryptic “Royal” ad, featuring the same font Audemars Piguet uses on its iconic model, has sparked speculation among collectors and watch enthusiasts

It is the “Royal” version of the ad that has the internet in a tizzy. Collectors and enthusiasts – particularly us at the Style team – speculate that the “Royal” could even refer to the much-loved Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, especially given the “Royal” in the ad features the same font that the independent Swiss watchmaker uses for its own Royal Oak branding.

The Royal Oak, courtesy of Gerald Genta, is considered a grail piece for many, and one of the most recognised integrated sports watch designs on the planet since its release in 1972. We reached out to Audemars Piguet and Swatch Group but neither were available for comment at the time of publishing.
