    US congressman swims to safety after his plane is forced to land on a lake

    Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany has said he sustained minor injuries after a plane he was on landed on a lake, forcing him and the pilot to swim to safety.

    Tiffany, the state's Republican nominee for governor, was travelling in a small plane on Saturday night when the aircraft encountered a mechanical issue, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Lake Wausau, the county sheriff's office said.

    "As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat," Tiffany wrote on social media. The pilot also sustained minor injuries.

    Wisconsin congressman Tom Tiffany was on his way home Saturday evening following a demanding day of parades and political events when his plane plunged into the pitch-black darkness of Lake Wausau.

    As he was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner in Onalaska, Wisconsin, Tiffany, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, was aboard a Beechcraft K35 when it lost power as it approached Wausau Downtown Airport, the congressman told reporters during a Sunday news conference.

    “Hang on, Tom, and buckle up because we’re going to go down,” Tiffany recounted pilot Len Bolt warning him moments before the emergency landing.

    Private plane crashes into Lake Wausau

    WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – A private plane went down in Lake Wausau at 9 p.m. Saturday, according to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.

    Two people sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital.

    The sheriff’s office said the plane will be marked with a buoy and asked people to give it distance.

    The Wisconsin DNR and State Patrol also responded to the scene.

    A one-tonne southern elephant seal named Neil, whose beachside antics have attracted millions of views on social media, appears to have returned to sea.

    The five-year-old has spent several weeks at his usual twice-yearly haul-out spot in southern Tasmania.

    Videos of Neil crushing signs and poles and lounging on suburban streets near fences have gone viral online and attracted streams of visitors to the otherwise sleepy coastal town.

    But on Thursday, Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) said it appeared Neil had left the area.

    Like many adolescents with an outsized social media presence and a distinct lack of constructive peer support, Neil the seal is exhibiting performative behaviour that is causing serious concern to those charged with his care and supervision.

    Neil is the five-year-old elephant seal born in southern Tasmania who still hauls himself ashore at or near his birthplace twice a year – once in October to moult, and once mid-year during mating season.

    In his early visits ashore as a playful pup of just half a ton or so, Neil spent time wrestling traffic cones or sprawling out across driveways or pavements, attracting a substantial global audience to social media posts about his shore visits.

    Neil the seal is more than a viral animal. He’s become a global folk hero

    I am one of Hobart’s many residents who travelled to a nearby beach to witness Neil the seal – an animal that has been receiving global attention for his wild personality and humorous antics.

    Neil’s latest arrival in Tasmania was in late June. Due to his celebrity status, a security detail from the local council had been tasked with limiting all pedestrian access to the animal.

    On my visit yesterday evening, people peered from a distance at the sleeping giant. A constant stream of cars was permitted to travel on the road, slowly, as though on an impromptu safari.

    A teenager has saved his mother and two younger siblings by making a four-hour swim to raise the alarm despite fading light and rough conditions after the family was swept out to sea in Western Australia.

    The Appelbee family were on holiday in Quindalup, 125 miles (200km) south of Perth, when strong winds pushed their inflatable paddleboards and kayak offshore from Geographe Bay on Friday afternoon.

    Joanne Appelbee, 47, asked her 13-year-old, Austin, to kayak back to shore to get help, but his boat soon took on water, forcing him to swim 2.5 miles back to land.

    Teenage hero swims four kilometres to rescue family stranded in ocean off WA coast

    A mother and her two children have been rescued off the coast of a holiday hotspot in WA’s South West after her eldest child, who was swept out to sea with them, swam four kilometres back to shore in fading light to get help.

    Joanne Appelbee and her children had been kayaking and paddleboarding off Quindalup in Geographe Bay on Friday morning when they were swept out to sea in rough conditions.

    Speaking to media back home in Perth on Tuesday, Appelbee said the group had gone out for one last paddle and a bit of fishing, and the weather had seemed calm, before a board flipped, they lost an oar and their kayak began to take on water.
