It's generational warfare as millennials take on gen Z in Beef season 2

The second season of Netflix series Beef centres on two couples from different generations. (Supplied: Netflix)

It's been nearly three years since the hit series Beef made its impressive debut, capturing the Zeitgeist — and a slew of Emmy Awards — with a wild tale of road rage-induced revenge starring Steven Yuen and Ali Wong.

The anthology series is finally back with a new cast — and a new beef for the audience to sink its teeth into.

Season two moves from the streets and sprawling suburbs of LA to the rarefied air of a Californian country club in Montecito, a coastal haven popular among celebrities one hour from the city.

Beef season two review – the best show on TV becomes an unlovable White Lotus rip-off

Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac are a miserable couple who run a country club and get blackmailed in a rich v poor potboiler that has been done so much better before – not least in the stunning first series. What a shame

We may have to start calling it White Lotus Derangement Syndrome. This is a condition spreading through the television commissioning system since Mike White debuted his brilliant anthology series five years ago, whereby drama is produced by setting poorer Americans alongside richer Americans in a location the latter choose to come to and the former can’t escape. In The White Lotus, they are the staff and guests at a variety of luxury resorts. In Sirens, the personal assistants of kabillionaires. In whatever Nicole Kidman is in they can be single mothers with children at assisted places at schools with the cashmere-clad elite, servants to expats nursing secret sadnesses in luxurious apartments, masseuses and other service providers at exclusive spa retreats, or exploited or sexually harassed nannies to people who think nothing of exploiting or harassing their nannies. In non-Kidman derivatives, the dogged blue collar viewer-avatars can also include cops, struggling novelists or academics. Unless the academic is a tenured professor, in which case the underdog becomes a sexually harassed student, who should probably unionise with the nannies.

New Zealand take first strike; Mustafizur out with knee injury

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham opted to bat first against Bangladesh in the first ODI of their three-match series in Dhaka on Friday morning.

There was a delay in the toss because Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons had to pass on a changed team sheet to captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz. This was later revealed to be Mustafizur Rahman being replaced by Shoriful Islam. It later emerged that the last-minute change was because Mustafizur had picked up a knee injury.

That meant a three-pronged fast-bowling attack of Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana and Shoriful.

Spreading the net: Why and how New Zealand have 53 cricketers playing in Asia this summer

Somewhat unnoticed, New Zealand will have 53 men's cricketers involved in various competitions in Asia across April and May.

In these two months, four different competitions – one each in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – are taking place in Asia that will feature cricketers from New Zealand:

Ahead of the start of the Bangladesh series, New Zealand head coach Rob Walter spoke about this being part of a conscious effort from New Zealand Cricket: "If you send out entire team to Sri Lanka, and then bring them here (Bangladesh), you've missed out an opportunity to give 12 other players the opportunity to develop their skills in Sri Lanka.

Thousands of beachgoers take advantage of Perth’s lingering summer-like picture-perfect weather

Perth is in the midst of a warmly welcomed hot streak that has the city feeling like it’s summer.

The mercury hit 31C on Sunday, with thousands flocking to the beach to make the most of the April sunshine that will continue well into this week.

Monday was forecast to hit 27C before it returns to 30C on Tuesday and continues in the high 20s for the next two days.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the April warm spell was slightly above the month’s usual average of 26C, but not unusual.

“Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s or near 30 degrees and drop back into the low 20s from Friday,” the BOM spokesperson said.

‘Harrowing’: Cyclone Narelle leaves graveyard of turtles, dolphins and seabirds in Western Australia

Exmouth local says devastating impact on wildlife along the coastline is ‘hard to put into words’

As the flooding from Tropical Cyclone Narelle’s violent visit to Exmouth subsided and the winds dropped, Brinkley Davies headed to Graveyards beach.

The beach, at least according to some Exmouth locals, got its name because of the tendency for turtles to get stuck on the dunes.

But on Sunday morning, this stretch of sand in remote Western Australia had turned into a literal graveyard, strewn with thousands of baby turtles and turtle eggs alongside dead fish, sea snakes, dolphins and seabirds.

Work continues on cyclone-hit ports at Dampier and Ashburton

Inspectors are on site at the Port of Dampier and the Port of Ashburton in Western Australia, assessing the damage done by Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

Both ports re-opened to some extent on March 28, however significant infrastructure damage is restricting the types of cargo that can be loaded and unloaded.

At the Port of Dampier all general cargo imports remain suspended with damage to the general cargo precinct including the Dampier Cargo Wharf and adjacent floating deck facility. The Bulk Liquids Berth is still operating with fuel imports not affected.

At the Port of Ashburton the Cargo Wharf remains closed for inspections over the next two to three days, with Pilbara Ports committed to communicating updates as it has them.

Premier League club tipped to take ‘huge gamble’ on Ange Postecoglou despite ‘terrible’ record in trophy-winning Tottenham spell and 39-day stint at Nottingham Forest

Ange Postecoglou is considering a return to the Premier League dugout, but potential suitors remain wary. The 60-year-old manager possesses a divisive track record in England, combining Europa League success at Tottenham Hotspur with a disastrous 17th-place finish, followed by a fleeting tenure at Nottingham Forest, making his next appointment a massive risk for any club.

According to a report from Football Insider, Postecoglou is assessing his options ahead of the summer following a highly damaging stint at Forest. Despite securing the Europa League trophy, his time at Tottenham ended in a dismal 17th-place finish, costing him his job. The Australian's subsequent move to the City Ground proved even more catastrophic, lasting just eight games before he was dismissed. Now, as clubs across the English top flight prepare for administrative changes, recruitment departments are left weighing his "Angeball" philosophy against the severe defensive vulnerabilities exposed during his turbulent time in the division.

Cristian Romero admits he's 'not having the best time' at Tottenham amid La Liga transfer talk

The Argentine defender didn't mask his frustration with the current environment at Spurs, though he emphasized a professional need to "focus on the club" and rediscover his best form. These comments paint a picture of a key figure increasingly disillusioned as he reportedly attracts interest from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Despite his admitted unhappiness, Romero was quick to emphasize that he remains professional and committed to steering the club away from danger. With a crucial fixture against Sunderland on the horizon, the defender understands that individual feelings must be set aside for the greater good of the Spurs squad as they fight for survival.

Tottenham: Cristian Romero’s mindset admission may make Ange Postecoglou think twice

Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has admitted he is “not having the best time” amid the ongoing relegation struggles.

On the face of it, a return of six goals and four assists in 31 games in all competitions is a good return for a central defender.

However, dig a little deeper and Romero has been something of a liability for Tottenham this season.

He has picked up eight yellow cards in the Premier League alone, and has been sent off twice. Indeed, Romero’s second dismissal led to a four-game ban.

The Argentine has been linked with Real Madrid this summer. Now, Romero has made, arguably, a worrying admission during Tottenham’s fight to stay in the Premier League.

DENVER — After defeating the Phoenix Suns in Arizona Tuesday night, the Nuggets flew back home to Denver for the second of back-to-back games.

Denver aims to continue its four-game home win streak with a victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at Ball Arena.

The teams square off for the fourth time this season. The Nuggets won the last meeting 118-109 on Jan. 15. Jamal Murray scored 33 points to help lead the Nuggets to the victory.

You can watch Wednesday's game over-the-air for free on KTVD. Coverage starts at 8 p.m.

Preview: Mavs try to clinch season series against the Nuggets with help from the NBA

The Nuggets have won three-in-a-row for the first time since 2023, it feels like, and are seeing improved results in the clutch after last night’s two-point win over the short-handed Phoenix Suns. But the NBA schedulers are back at it again today, giving the good guys a 9:00 p.m. start time on the road followed by an 8:00 p.m. start back home (with a flight delay thrown in just for kicks).

Adding insult to fatigue, the team gets the rested Dallas Mavericks tonight who have beaten them twice already this year, hanging 131 in both wins. It feels like the making of yet another schedule loss in a season of brutal back-to-backs, but the Nuggets still have a shot at the three-seed if they can hang with the Lakers—-a team who’s had twice as many days at home and received the most favorable whistle in the league again this season.

Squads named for Auckland FC’s A-League match against Melbourne City

Striker Sam Cosgrove will return to the Auckland FC line-up for Saturday’s men’s A-League match against Melbourne City.

Cosgrove completed a one-match suspension last weekend and has been named in Auckland FC’s squad for the game at Go Media Stadium Mt Smart.

Head coach Steve Corica has also named several players in the provisional squad who were previously under injury clouds.

All Whites defender Nando Pijnaker has been included in the squad but missed the derby against Wellington Phoenix after rolling an ankle in training. Corica said after the derby that Pijnaker could be out for two or three games.

An out-of-control bushfire is threatening lives in three central Victorian towns, just a few kilometres away from where a deadly major fire burned in January.

The fire has started on a day on which emergency services are warning people to stay alert to extreme fire danger across the state.

Residents of Kerrisdale, Tallarook and Trawool – about 15 kilometres south of Seymour – are being urged to take shelter immediately from the blaze as it is too late to evacuate.

“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive,” the 1.55pm warning read. “The safest option is to take shelter indoors immediately. It is too late to leave.”

A Breath of Sanity in the Ongoing Fight for Safety and Fairness in Women’s Sports

Imagine the crisp air of the Italian Alps, the roar of the crowd at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, and Swedish skier Elis Lundholm carving down the course — “making history” not with a groundbreaking record, but with something far more straightforward and refreshing. Lundholm, a biological female who identifies as male, is set to become the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the Winter Olympics. Yet instead of pushing into the men’s category in the name of her so-called gender identity, she’s competing in the women’s freestyle skiing division — right where biology aligns.

The International Olympic Committee’s 2021 Framework on Fairness, Inclusion, and Non-Discrimination opened the door for trans-identifying athletes to participate if their sport’s federation approves. While the IOC has signaled possible future tweaks to better safeguard fairness and safety in women’s categories, those 2021 guidelines still stand. Under them, Lundholm could have sought a spot in the men’s field — but she didn’t. She’s skiing with the women. Whether intentional or not, that choice is one that honors biological reality in the middle of one of the most heated debates in sports.

Olympic committee: New transgender policy consensus reached across sports

A proposed new consensus between sports leaders across the globe about gender policy would be a first uniform criteria.

Global sports leaders ‌have reached consensus on a new set of eligibility criteria for transgender athletes, with the new policy expected to be announced within the first half of this year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Saturday.

It would be the first uniform policy adopted by the IOC and international sports federations, applying to major events in dozens of sports, including the Games and world championships. Currently, federations have their own rules, which can vary.

Details of the new policy are unclear, but it is expected to severely restrict the participation of transgender athletes who compete in women’s categories if they have undergone full male puberty before any subsequent medical transition.
