What it takes to conquer the Bathurst 12 Hour… and how an Aussie can claim it

The iconic Mount Panorama will host Australia’s international endurance race this weekend when the lights go out on the prestigious Bathurst 12 Hour.

Twice as long as the renowned Bathurst 1000 and open to cars and drivers from around the world, the half-day race is the de facto season opener for Australian motorsport in 2026, and this year’s edition promises to be the biggest in years.

The grid features some of the biggest names from domestic, regional and international racing. Among them are championship winners in a variety of categories, including on two wheels and four, all seeking to conquer the mountain.

What Supercars is testing at Bathurst 12 Hour

The category has a Triple Eight Ford Mustang, Team 18 Chevrolet Camaro and Walkinshaw TWG Toyota Supra at Mount Panorama and four 30-minute slots in which to run them across Friday and Saturday.

While there’s been much focus on new player Toyota, Supercars’ data gathering is also about ensuring there’s straight line parity between the Mustang and Camaro.

Straight line speed was the big talking point at last year’s Great Race – in particular the ability for Camaro runners to tow up on Mustangs on Conrod in the race.

There was heated debate over whether that was due to engine – and the impact of barometric pressure at Bathurst – or aerodynamic factors.

Live: Alcaraz takes opening set on RLA after Aussies take mixed doubles crown

Australia's Olivia Gadecki and John Peers have successfully defended their mixed doubles title at Melbourne Park, coming from a set down to win in a thrilling 10-point tiebreaker.

Carlos Alcaraz is now on Rod Laver Arena, playing in his first Australian Open semifinal, up against Germany's Alexander Zverev.

Then tonight, 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic will take on number two seed Jannik Sinner.

Follow all the action from Melbourne Park in our live blog below.

Alcaraz is going to go down throwing haymakers in this game I reckon. Might as well leave it all out there. He belts his way to 0-15.

Men's semi-finals at Australian Open – listen to BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra coverage from 08:00 GMT (UK only)

Third seed Zverev bidding for first major title after three runner-up finishes

An important game now for Alexander Zverev to consolidate his advantage as he seeks to level up this match.

An ace provides the perfect start, but Carlos Alcaraz makes a return for 30-30.

That's a great point from the German, though, as he directs Alcaraz one way before guiding a volley in the opposite direction on his way to securing a 5-2 lead.

Carlos Alcaraz sees off the first break point, and shuts down the second with an overhead smash into the back of the court.

After the drama of his third-round win against Eliot Spizzirri, Monday’s straight-sets passage into another Australian Open quarterfinal was just what Jannik Sinner needed.

The two-time defending AO champion suffered cramp in Saturday’s conditions during that four-set victory over the American, but it was business as usual on Day 9 as he raised his game when it mattered to beat fellow Italian Luciano Darderi 6-1 6-3 7-6(2).

Australian Open 2026: Rejuvenated Jannik Sinner sails into quarter-finals

Jannik Sinner looked rejuvenated as he sailed into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with an assured victory over fellow Italian Luciano Darderi.

Defending champion Sinner said he was "lucky" to still be competing in Melbourne after he battled 40C heat and cramps in a testing third-round match.

Only coming off court and having the roof pulled over saved Sinner from a shock defeat by American world number 85 Eliot Spizzirri on Saturday.

But the second seed looked fresher against an injury-hampered Darderi as he surged through the opening two sets, dropping just four games.

There were still some signs of fatigue, as Sinner appeared to fade late in the third set when Darderi put up more resistance to force a tie-break.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has appointed the Secretary of the Defence Department, Greg Moriarty, to be Australia’s new ambassador to Washington, succeeding Kevin Rudd, who leaves the position in March.

The highly-respected senior bureaucrat is a safe choice, and his defence background gives him special qualifications for the post when the further development of AUKUS will be a major preoccupation in coming years.

New ambassador to US has a daunting task ahead of him

It appears that Greg Moriarty is eminently qualified to be Australia’s next ambassador to the United States (“Defence Secretary, former Turnbull aide to become next Australian ambassador to US” January 25). One would expect that Mr Moriarty, in normal times, would be able to keep the relationship with our long-term ally on an even keel. But these are not normal times. A once-great democracy is crumbling before our eyes. An armed paramilitary force, ICE, is terrorising US citizens and executing some of them. Martial law may be declared in the next few months. It is possible that the 2026 half-term election and/or the 2028 presidential election will not be held because of a perceived insurrection. An armed coup cannot be ruled out. As Mr Moriarty gets his feet under his new desk, Australia should be reconsidering the defence policies that have for the past 80 years relied on a rock-solid relationship with a global superpower that shared our democratic values. That US no longer exists. Mike Reddy, Vincentia

The head of the department of defence, Greg Moriarty, will succeed Kevin Rudd as Australia’s ambassador to the United States.

The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, announced Moriarty’s appointment to the role on Sunday. A former chief of staff to Malcolm Turnbull and former Australian envoy to Iran and Indonesia, he has led the defence department since 2017. He will take up the posting in Washington from April.

If you’re heading to Mecca in 2026, get ready to reach the destination faster and quietly. Saudi Arabia has officially launched its first fully electric bus rapid transit network. The Holy City, is marking a major shift in how millions of pilgrims move during Hajj and Umrah. The Masar BRT has elevated a transport upgrade by introducing Electric bus in Mecca for the easy passage of pilgrims.

Mecca’s electric transit revolution set to redefine the pilgrim journey in 2026

Riyadh, Dec 19: For those planning a journey to the Holy City in 2026, getting around Mecca is set to become markedly calmer, cleaner and more efficient. With its official rollout following inauguration in late 2025, the Masar Bus Rapid Transit system has emerged as the Middle East’s first fully electric BRT network, reshaping daily movement through one of the world’s most spiritually significant urban spaces.

Far more than a new fleet of buses, the Masar project represents a complete rethinking of pilgrim mobility. Introduced as Saudi Arabia prepares for growing Hajj and Umrah numbers, the electric network is designed to ease congestion, cut emissions and improve reliability at times when the city faces its heaviest crowd pressure. The system operates along the Masar corridor, a vital route linking major transport hubs with areas close to the Grand Mosque, making access to Masjid Al Haram faster and more direct.

Kohli, Rohit star on record-breaking night for India

Records tumbled as veteran Indian superstars helped overcome Proteas in a thriller in Ranchi

Virat Kohli's record-extending 52nd one-day international century laid the groundwork for India's 17-run win over South Africa on Sunday on a record-breaking night for Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

The narrow victory got India off to a winning start in their three-match series after South Africa swept the two-match Test series last week.

Former captains Kohli and Rohit, who have retired from Tests and Twenty20 internationals, delighted the Ranchi crowd with a 136-run partnership for the second wicket.

It was their 20th century stand in ODI cricket, taking them equal second in the all-time list for such partnerships alongside Sri Lankan duo Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan. Only legendary Indian pair Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have more ODI century partnerships together, with 26.

Watch: Dewald Brevis takes a stunner to dismiss Ruturaj Gaikwad

Dewald Brevis lit up the opening ODI with a moment of sheer brilliance, pulling off a breathtaking one-handed diving catch at backward point to dismiss Ruturaj Gaikwad for 8 off 14 balls. Flying full stretch to his right, Brevis produced the breakthrough South Africa badly needed, ending a cautious third-wicket stand of 22 runs in 5.1 overs.

The dismissal offered some relief for the visitors, with Virat Kohli continuing to hold firm at the other end, unbeaten on a commanding 85 off 78 deliveries. Washington Sundar walked in at No. 5 for the first time in his career, with India 184 for 3 in 26.2 overs. Washington Sundar, struggling to rotate the strike during his time at the crease, managed just 13 off 19 balls before finding mid-off in an attempt to accelerate, leaving India 200 for 4 in 30.3 overs with Kohli on 88 off 83.

Fans accuse CSK captain after burning golden chance in IND vs SA 1st ODI

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s long-awaited return to India’s ODI team did not go as planned, and fans on social media quickly expressed their disappointment after the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain was dismissed for just eight runs in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi.

Gaikwad earned his recall following Shreyas Iyer’s injury. But his comeback innings was cut short by a stunning moment of brilliance from Dewald Brevis, who took a flying one-handed catch at backward point.

While trying to cut a ball slightly outside off-stump from Ottneil Baartman, he sliced it in the air, only for Brevis to leap sideways and pull off a sensational catch. The effort immediately brought back memories of legendary fielder Jonty Rhodes, and Brevis’ athletic grab went viral online within minutes.
