Tech promises smooth sailing in Fremantle waters
Fremantle’s debut as a sailing grand prix venue is expected to have ongoing benefits for other water users.
The Oracle Sail Grand Prix will make its Fremantle debut from January 17 to 18, launching the 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship season.
Just metres from the shore of Bathers Beach, national teams will race identical 50-foot catamarans at speeds topping 100km/h.
Detailed three-dimensional mapping of the seabed off Fremantle has been held ahead of the event to make it safer for competitors and officials.
As part of the formal approval process for SailGP, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure considered a range of issues, including safety risks above and below the waterline prior to its endorsement of the event.
SailGP: First look at F50s sailing in "The Doctor" – 11 Videos
A first look at the F50's test sailing in Fremantle on Tuesday in the Fremantle Doctor.
Conditions started at 10-15kts building to 25kts before the session was cancelled at 1500hrs.
The F50s were sailing off Bathers Beach – where the water gets quite shallow, kicking up and awkward chop, which made for some challenging sailing.
The bottom line with all these videos is that they show the F50 is very capable of being sailed fast in these conditions – and makes for some excellent viewing. Hopefully SailGP will set new standards for TV coverage of the sport and show what a huge difference it makes to hold sailing events in venues where there is some WIND!!
