SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A tentative agreement has been reached between the Natomas Teachers Association and Natomas Unified School District, ending a weeklong strike that left thousands of students without their regular classroom teachers.

The strike began March 10 and concluded late Wednesday night after 12 months of bargaining and seven days on the picket line.

During the strike, classrooms remained open but were staffed by substitutes instead of regular teachers.

The strike between the community and the district escalated this week. On Monday, students joined the march, and on Tuesday, a parent was arrested after being accused of illegally entering the Natomas Unified building for a sit-in protest at the district office.

Strike looms after teachers reject ‘completely unacceptable’ government pay offer

The Allan government is facing teacher strikes in the lead-up to November’s state election after the Australian Education Union on Monday rejected its offer of a 17 per cent pay increase over four years.

The pay offer is the first tabled by the government in a wage dispute that has already dragged on for eight months.

Public school teachers are planning to walk off the job next Tuesday in an escalation of an industrial dispute that has cleaved a divide between Victoria’s long-term Labor government and an influential union that campaigned for its re-election at the last two state polls.

The Victorian government has made its first pay offer to teachers after eight months of negotiations ahead of a statewide strike next week.

The Australian Education Union has rejected the proposal, saying the pay rise is inadequate and the offer does not address excessive workloads and unpaid overtime.

Schools will shut next Tuesday as teachers, principals and support staff walk off the job for the first time in 13 years.

Victorian teachers have rejected a pay offer made by the state government as it attempts to head off a statewide strike next week.

NT scraps middle schools, almost two decades after introducing them

Territory students, including year 4 student Harley Snell, are returning to the classroom today. (ABC News: Dane Hirst)

Most Northern Territory middle schools have transitioned into secondary schools as the 2026 school year begins, under a government policy designed to boost student retention.

While NT student attendance fell to a 10-year low in 2025, the government says new measures such as fines and truancy officers are working.

The NT's remaining few middle schools will be turned into secondary schools by the beginning of 2027.

The Northern Territory has scrapped its middle school model after almost two decades, as students head back to school for 2026.
