Mexico Teenager Gilberto Mora Makes History With Start vs. Ecuador

Gilberto Mora will make history just by stepping on the pitch for Mexico's round of 32 match against Ecuador on Tuesday at Mexico City Stadium.

The 17-year-old will become the second-youngest player ever to start in a World Cup knockout stage match, behind Brazil legend Pelé. Pelé still holds the record as the youngest player to start in a World Cup knockout stage match at 17 years and 239 days old; Mora is 17 years and 259 days.

Mora has appeared in two matches for Mexico this tournament, coming on as a substitute in El Tri's group-stage opener and starting in its group-stage finale. He is both the youngest player to start and sub on for Mexico at a World Cup match.

From Gil Mora and Obed Vargas: How Javier Aguirre's youngsters are building Mexico's World Cup future

Gil Mora, Obed Vargas and Mateo Chávez are leading Mexico's youth movement as Javier Aguirre builds a World Cup contender with one eye firmly on the future.

Current Xolos manager Sebastián "Loco" Abreu has seen it all in football. After playing for 31 clubs, there are few careers, dressing rooms or footballing paths he has not crossed.

That is why 17-year-old Gilberto Mora could hardly ask for a better manager at this stage of his career. As Mora climbs the ranks and breaks barriers rarely seen in Mexican football, Abreu has become one of the voices best positioned to explain what makes him so special.

Scotland told McTominay is key to stopping World Cup starlet linked to transfer

That's the view of their former midfielder Barry Bannan ahead of the upcoming World Cup test in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

A 1-0 victory over Haiti last week got Scotland off to a strong start in their first World Cup campaign since 1998.

Next up are Morocco, who drew 1-1 with Brazil in their opening match with the help of breakout star Bouaddi.

The 18-year-old made only his fourth international appearance but shone in the midfield during his tournament debut.

Bouaddi currently plays for Lille but could be set for a summer move as both Arsenal and Liverpool have held talks over a transfer.

Newcastle United could do a lot worse than making a move for Ayyoub Bouaddi if Sandro Tonali quits St James' Park.

Having shone for Morocco against Brazil last weekend, he sparkled again at the World Cup to push Morocco closer to the knockout stages.

With the likes of Liverpool, Paris St-Germain and Arsenal liking the look of the 18-year-old, it may take a fee of around £60m to tempt Lille's hand.

Bouaddi actually started the move that rocked Scotland after 71 seconds in Boston on a glorious summer evening here in Massachusetts, when Ismael Saibari timed his run perfectly before hooking a sublime finish into the top corner and beating Angus Gunn after Brahim Diaz's assist.

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva wins French Open and claims first grand slam title

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva was already a tennis phenom at age 15.

The eighth-ranked Andreeva ended the run of 114th-ranked Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the Roland Garros final on Saturday.

Andreeva became the youngest player to win the women’s singles title since Monica Seles, who was 18 when she landed her third straight French Open in 1992.

Chwalinska was attempting to become the first qualifier to capture the Roland Garros title.

When Andreeva executed a backhand cross-court winner on her first match point, she dropped on her knees to the clay to celebrate.

“You’re so young and talented. It’s so annoying,” Chwalinska told Andreeva during the awards ceremony.

Australia has lost the opening match of its Billie Jean King Cup tie against Great Britain, with Aussie spearhead Talia Gibson going down to teenager Mika Stojsavljevic in straight sets.

Gibson lost the opening set in a tiebreak, and came from 2-5 down in the second set to level at 5-5.

But the world number 56 was outplayed by the 17-year-old Brit to fall 7-6(4), 7-5 at John Cain Arena in Melbourne.

The result means Great Britian takes a 1-0 lead, with another singles match to be played on Friday.

Shock result for Aussies in Billie Jean King Cup opener

Australia's quest to win a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals is off to the worst possible start with spearhead Talia Gibson a shock loser to British teen Mika Stojsavljevic.

Gibson was expected to get the tie at Melbourne's John Cain Arena off to a flying start on Friday for the home side, but she fell 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 to the lowly-ranked 17-year-old.

World No.56 Gibson took over as Australia's No.1 following injury to Maya Joint and arrived at the tie in sparkling form.

The 21-year-old had recently beaten five top 20-ranked players and rocketed to her career-high ranking.
