Mud balls a hot topic at soggy Chevron Championship

HOUSTON – The topic of mud balls came up often during pre-tournament press conferences at soggy Memorial Park. On Thursday, in the opening round of the Chevron Championship, many LPGA players were surprised by the tour's decision to play the ball down.

Two-time Chevron winner Brittany Lincicome counted seven times during the course of her opening round that her ball had enough dirt caked on to impact the flight.

Linn Grant, who opened with a 2-under 70, felt playing preferred lies would've been the right choice after storms rolled through early week, dumping 2.9 inches of rain and shortening the Tuesday pro-am. Officials closed the course three times in two days.

If organizers schedule an important tennis tournament and a slew of the world’s best players miss it, is it still an important tournament?

This is the question the Madrid Open will present to the tennis world over the next 10 days. It was a similar story at the Canadian Open last summer, when Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka skipped the event.

The Madrid Open and the Canadian Open are two of the six biggest mixed events in tennis outside the Grand Slams, known as ATP Masters 1000s and WTA 1000s. The BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif., the Miami Open, the Italian Open and the Cincinnati Open are the others.

At the 2026 Madrid Open, is it Sinner—and Sabalenka—take all?

Two dominant No. 1s descend on the Caja Magica, but how will the field fare? Six things to watch.

Last month we watched the Sunshine Double. On Tuesday we begin the…what should we call it? The Dirty Double? The Clay-Thousand? The Euro Slide?

However we want to say it, the tours will spend the next month at the recently expanded clay 1000s in Madrid and Rome.

With the Madrid draws made, here are six things to watch for as the players take over the Caja Magica for the next two weeks.

Carlos Alcaraz has a wrist injury. Novak Djokovic has a shoulder injury. That means the No. 2, 3, and 4 seeds are Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger Aliassime, and Ben Shelton, respectively. Combined, Sinner has won his last 22 meetings with those three opponents. The last time he lost to any of them was 2023.

Ashley Harkleroad’s husband files for divorce from tennis star turned Playboy model

Longtime tennis couple Ashley Harkleroad and Chuck Adams are divorcing after 16 years of marriage, according to TMZ.

Adams, 54, filed for a legal separation from Harkleroad, 40, on April 14, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split, per court documents.

Adams is seeking joint custody of their two kids — son, Charlie, 17, a 6-foot guard in the class of 2028, and daughter, Cissy, 15, a Fila-sponsored tennis player — with physical custody going to Harkleroad and Adams getting visitation.

He requested to terminate the court’s ability to award spousal support to Harkleroad.

Adams also requested to amend his divorce petition after he gets his current assets and debts sorted out.

Pro Athlete Couple Divorcing After 16-Year Marriage

Ashley Harkleroad is dealing with a major development in her personal life after more than a decade of marriage.

According to court records, her husband, Chuck Adams, filed for separation on April 14, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, who married in 2009, share two children, ages 17 and 15. Adams is seeking joint custody, with physical custody going to Harkleroad, along with visitation rights. He has also requested that the court terminate any potential spousal support.

The split comes after a long relationship rooted in tennis. Adams competed professionally in the 1990s before later coaching, including working closely with Harkleroad during her career.

Harkleroad, who turned pro at just 15, quickly rose through the ranks. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 39 in 2003, a breakout season that included a strong run in Charleston, where she knocked off multiple top-20 players. That performance helped establish her as one of the rising names in American tennis at the time.

Tennis great Andy Roddick ‘stunned’ by Novak Djokovic nearly hitting a ball kid at Australian Open

Tennis great Andy Roddick has teed off at Novak Djokovic after the 10-time Australian Open champion went within a whisker of being defaulted from another grand slam tournament.

Midway through the second set of his third-round win over Botic van de Zandschulp, a frustrated Djokovic wildly slapped a shot in the direction of a ball kid.

It came after van de Zandschulp pushed a shot long and appeared completely unnecessary given the Serbian had won the point and was leading by a set and 4-2 at the time.

The kid had no chance to react, barely flinching as the ball flew past her head.

Barbs directed at Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala appear to be AI fabrications

Ahead of popular Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala's first appearance at the Australian Open in mid-January 2026, fabricated quotes spread in social media posts claiming they were insults directed at the 20-year-old by Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Philippine news anchor Mel Tiangco. Both Albanese and Tiangco denied making the comments, which appear to stem from AI-generated articles.

"Just moments before at the Australian Open, an unforgettable scene unfolded as Anthony Albanese insulted Alex Eala ahead of the tournament," reads part of a Facebook post shared January 16.

The post claims Albanese dismissed Eala as "just a player from a small country". A comment links to a longer article posted on multiple websites, repeating the claim.

Hometown bet Alex Eala's hopes dashed by Camila Osorio in Philippine Women's Open quarters

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

In a clash of former US Open junior champions, Camila Osorio dashed the hopes of Filipino fans of seeing their own Alex Eala hoist her first WTA title.

Their first matchup in the pro ranks resulted in a defeat for the 49th-ranked Eala, as she succumbed in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 against Osorio in the quarterfinals of the Philippine Women's Open on Thursday evening at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The opening set turned into a shaky serving affair, with momentum swinging back and forth as both players traded breaks. Double faults crept in early with three apiece in the set — highlighting the lack of rhythm on serve.

A trio of teenage tennis scions are spotted together at the Australian Open – but who are their famous fathers?

The twin daughters of Mirka and Roger Federer joined forces with Cruz Hewitt at the Australian Open this week

Two great tennis dynasties took front row seats at the Australian Open this week, as the scions of two great champions sat side by side at the Rod Laver Arena. Seventeen-year-old Cruz Hewitt, the budding champion son of former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, has clearly been fostering a friendship with 16-year-old Myla and Charlene Federer, the twin daughters of (arguably) the sport’s greatest player, Roger Federer.

The trio were spotted courtside for the first-round match-up between two-time Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner and the world number 92, Hugo Gaston. The match was something of an anti-climax, with Gaston retiring at 2-6, 1-6 down. For tennis fans, however, the next generation of tennis legends in the crowd – laughing and sharing jokes during the game – were the real stars of the show.

Roger Federer's wife wears the most expensive accessory at the Australian Open – and you will NOT believe how much it costs

Roger Federer's wife Mirka was spotted wearing a hugely expensive accessory as she lapped up the atmosphere at the Australian Open this week.

The Swiss tennis icon has returned with his family to Melbourne Park for the first time since 2020, and rolled back the years for a series of exhibition matches.

As Carlos Alcaraz put it, class never truly disappears and the 20-time Grand Slam champion showcased that earlier this week.

Federer took on Norwegian star Casper Ruud for an exhibition match prior to the tournament and teamed up with Ash Barty and Andre Agassi for a mixed doubles match against Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter.

Their famous fathers were rivals, and Cruz Hewitt and twins Myla and Charlene Federer are friends.

Cruz Hewitt, son of former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, watched Jannik Sinner’s Australian Open first-round win over Hugo Gaston seated next to Roger Federer’s daughters, Myla and Charlene.

Cruz Hewitt and compatriot James Duckworth received a doubles wild card and were set to play their AO first-round doubles match on Court 13 on Wednesday.

Devoted AO fans will remember 11 years ago when 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer hit some balls with the young Cruz Hewitt during an Aussie exo.

Tennis Star Daniil Medvedev Says He Will Not Give Up Russian Citizenship

Grand Slam champion Daniil Medvedev said Wednesday that he has no plans to change his nationality, distancing himself from a growing number of Russian tennis players who have done so in recent years.

Since the full-scale invasion in February 2022, several Russian players on the professional tennis circuit have sought to sever formal ties with their home country.

Daria Kasatkina, a former world No. 8 now ranked 43rd, switched her allegiance to Australia last March after criticizing Russia’s treatment of LGBTQ+ people. She has also described the war as a “nightmare.”

More recently, tennis player Anastasia Potapova announced that her application for Austrian citizenship had been approved.

The victory extends Paul’s flawless head-to-head record against Davidovich Fokina to 5-0 and continues a bizarre statistical trend in Melbourne, where the Spaniard has now lost five consecutive 6-1 sets to the American across their tournament meetings.
