Inside the unlikely alliance that broke Trump and unleashed the Epstein files

"The president called me a traitor because I stood with the victims of Jeffrey Epstein … That was a significant turn. He was upset, angry with me, and yelling at me."

Marjorie Taylor Greene has spoken candidly about the moment she decided to go her own way and the wrath of US President Donald Trump that followed, in an interview with the ABC.

Greene had been a very loyal MAGA soldier. She rarely veered off party lines, voting with Mr Trump's position on an overwhelming majority of bills in the US Congress.

She had always been vocal in her support for Trump, campaigning for him across the country, stumping for him at rallies and spinning for him on conservative television. In the words of political commentator Gretchen Carlson, Greene was "full-blood MAGA".

The mystery man who links Andrew with Jeffrey Epstein

In the high-tech megacity of Shenzhen in southern China, Prince Andrew looked on as dancers spun and waved streamers to entertain an audience of investors and innovators.

It was spring 2019, a gala dinner for the Chinese arm of his start-up competition Pitch@Palace – which turned out to be the last.

Within a year, the then-prince would step back from royal life after a disastrous interview about his links with the convicted American sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

There was a third man in this drama, little known to almost everyone, who was at the event, glimpsed in a brief shot in the official highlights video – David Stern.

rory mcilroy confident as Genesis Invitational begins at Riviera on Thursday

Rory McIlroy arrives at the Genesis Invitational optimistic about his form and intent on sharpening his game before he returns to Augusta to defend his Masters title in April. The world number two will tee off on Thursday (ET) in a group that includes Tommy Fleetwood and reigning Pebble Beach champion Collin Morikawa.

McIlroy conceded that his recent start to the season has been about shaking off some early rust, but he said there were enough positives from last week to carry into the Riviera Country Club. He finished tied for 14th at Pebble Beach, five shots behind Morikawa, and closed with an eye-catching 64 on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy is set to play his first round at Augusta National since his Masters triumph next week, and he has already enjoyed some of the perks that come with his Green Jacket.

McIlroy completed his quest to win at Augusta National 10 months ago, edging out Justin Rose in a playoff after a rollercoaster final round. The world No. 2 ended his decade-long wait for a fifth major win, completing the career grand slam in the process.

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here.

Welcome back to The Daily’s Sunday culture edition, in which one Atlantic writer or editor reveals what’s keeping them entertained. Today’s special guest is Sally Jenkins, a staff writer who has reported on the man who broke physics, athletes who keep competing into their 40s, and how to fix the mess of college sports.

The Big Death in the New Game of Thrones Show Is an All-Timer From George R.R. Martin

After each episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Slate writers will gather to answer a crucial question: Who is the worst person in Westeros? This week, senior staff writer Rebecca Onion and staff writer Nadira Goffe answer the call.

Rebecca Onion: Nadira! We have a cathartic penultimate episode this week, as the Trial of Seven, which our main guy Dunk is facing as a result of his having defended the puppeteer Tanselle from the wrath of Aerion Targaryen, has gone from concept to actuality. Dunk has managed to gather his team of seven with the help of his squire Egg, and now we will see how this hedge knight who has seen no combat is going to fare in, well, combat.

There’s Never Been a ‘Game of Thrones’ Battle Like Dunk’s Trial of Seven

Game of Thrones became such a popular series, in part, because of the many epic battles and thrilling fight scenes it produced over the course of its eight-season run. Through its first 18 episodes, House of the Dragon has had a few of its own, even if much of its second season merely built anticipation for the bigger battle yet to come. On Sunday, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms supplied its first true taste of combat as Dunk stood his trial of seven, and the clash didn’t exactly go down as many Game of Thrones fans might have anticipated.

Savannah Guthrie has not been on the Today Show since the disappearance of her mother Nancy. (Supplied: Instagram)

It was meant to be a night like any other, spent eating and laughing in the company of family.

On January 31, Nancy Guthrie visited her daughter, Annie, and played games at her house before she was driven home by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni.

He watched from his car as she walked to her garage and safely entered her house in the Catalina Foothills neighbourhood of Tucson, Arizona, police told the New York Times.

It was one of those everyday occurrences that would not have been all that memorable, had it not been the last time anyone saw or heard from Nancy Guthrie.

    Introducing Claude Opus 4.6

The new Claude Opus 4.6 improves on its predecessor’s coding skills. It plans more carefully, sustains agentic tasks for longer, can operate more reliably in larger codebases, and has better code review and debugging skills to catch its own mistakes. And, in a first for our Opus-class models, Opus 4.6 features a 1M token context window in beta.

Opus 4.6 can also apply its improved abilities to a range of everyday work tasks: running financial analyses, doing research, and using and creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Within Cowork, where Claude can multitask autonomously, Opus 4.6 can put all these skills to work on your behalf.

The AI that spooked the stock market just got a big update

Anthropic’s Cowork AI assistant sent shockwaves through Wall Street this week. Now Anthropic is taking another leap forward, improving its model.

Anthropic’s new Claude Opus 4.6 model, announced Thursday, is designed to make Cowork AI better for office and coding work, potentially raising even more concerns that the AI tool could replace specialized software packages that companies use for those tasks.

Legal and financial analysis software stocks have plunged in recent days, bringing the broader stock market down with them. The Nasdaq just had its worst two-day tumble since April, and it’s down another 0.7% Thursday.

Many experts wonder whether AI will ultimately cost some workers their jobs. Tech giants like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are locked in a race to build AI models that they hope will underpin the future workplace.

The Golden Girls Role That Betty White Was Originally Offered

"The Golden Girls" is widely celebrated for its rare ensemble chemistry. The pairing of Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty proved to be television lightning in a bottle. The dynamic between Dorothy Zbornak (Arthur), Rose Nylund (White), Blanche Devereaux (McClanahan), and Sophia Petrillo (Getty) remains powerful decades later. What some fans may not realize is just how close that ensemble came to looking very different.

The late White was not originally intended to play Rose. Early on, producers had her in mind for a different role. In a 2005 Entertainment Weekly interview, McClanahan reflected on the show's early casting process, recalling being immediately drawn to Blanche while reading the pilot. Producers, however, had other ideas. As McClanahan remembered, "Before I started reading it, I said, 'Ohhh, this is a winner.' I called my agent and said I was perfect for the role of Blanche, to which she said, 'They want you to read for Rose. They want Betty White for the role of Blanche.'"

Played the amazingly talented Betty White, Rose Nylund may have been the sweetest Golden Girl, but she was also one of the funniest. Played brilliantly by Betty White, Rose’s innocent delivery, St. Olaf stories, and accidental one-liners made her a constant source of laughter on “The Golden Girls,” which can be seen on Hallmark. Rose was special because she rarely tried to be funny. It just happened naturally for her. Check out 10 of the best quotes from Rose that still make fans laugh today.

At the pointiest end of sport, what separates the best athletes is wafer thin. What divides the world No.1 from No.3 can be tiny. What separates a grand slam winner from being runner-up yet again? A marginal line call? A skewed shot? Cramp at an inopportune moment?

What Alexander Zverev does not think separates them is his life-long management of type one diabetes.

German star Alexander Zverev is one of the many top seeds who'll be hoping for a deep run at the Australian Open. Zverev is seeded third for the tournament Down Under, trailing behind Carlos Alcaraz at number one and Jannik Sinner in second place.

In the previous Australian Open, Sinner triumphed over Zverev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the final to clinch his second title in Australia. Zverev failed to secure a single break point throughout the match and will be keen to better his performance in the 2026 edition, although he faces stiff competition once again.

Inside Alexander Zverev's relationship with girlfriend who has big age gap

The Australian Open begins on Sunday with the world's best tennis players locking horns for the first Grand Slam title of the year. German star Alexander Zverev is seeded in third ahead of the tournament Down Under, with Carlos Alcaraz at number one and Jannik Sinner just ahead Zverev in second.

Last time out in Australia, Sinner defeated Zverev 6–3, 7–6, 6–3 in the final to secure his second Australian Open title. Zverev was unable to bring up a single break point during the entire encounter and will be aiming to improve his showing in the 2026 edition and win it, but faces stern competition yet again.

'Would that give me comfort?' New Aussie drama spotlights organ donation

In Dear Life, Brooke Satchwell stars as Lillian, a 40-something grieving the loss of her fiance. (Supplied: Stan/Jane Zhang)

A few years ago, screenwriter Robyn Butler asked herself a difficult question: What would my life look like if my husband died?

"When you love someone deeply, you have that feeling every now and again. It makes you realise how much they mean to you."

Soon she began to wonder what that life would look like if she didn't have kids. Would it help to donate her husband's organs?

"If I had donated his heart, would that give me comfort knowing that that existed, living, breathing somewhere?" she says.

Dear Life review – Brooke Satchwell hauntingly good in an otherwise clunky drama

Playing a grief-stricken woman who traces the organ recipients of her late fiance, the actor outshines the rest of this cloying Stan series

In Stan’s new six-part drama, Brooke Satchwell delivers a painfully good performance as Lillian, a distraught widow whose centre of gravity – entire footing in the universe, in fact – has been thrown off by the death of her fiance.

You never doubt her anguish, nor that haunted look in her heavy-lidded eyes, pressed down by grief and the unfairness of a world that never follows a just moral rhythm, tossing her around like dust in a draft.
