Breaking: Third Sydney Airport take-off incident investigated by safety body

An air traffic control mix-up has contributed to a third runway take-off incident at Sydney Airport in as many weeks. (ABC News)

Safety authorities are investigating a third runway incident at Sydney Airport that involved a Qantas flight crossing the path of a departing Virgin Australia aircraft.

The incident followed a Jetstar flight slamming on its brakes during take-off to avoid colliding with a Qatar Airways plane being towed on the tarmac.

The ATSB said it would conduct interviews with Virgin and Qantas crew involved and review recorded flight data.

Virgin plane aborts take-off as Qantas plane crosses Sydney runway

Investigators are probing the third safety incident at Sydney Airport in less than three weeks after a Virgin plane was forced to abort take-off when it discovered a Qantas plane on its runway.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it is investigating a runway incursion and rejected take-off of Virgin Australia flight VA555 from Sydney to Perth and Qantas flight QF728 from Sydney to Ayers Rock Airport.

The incident, which occurred shortly after 10am on August 9, involved two Boeing 737s. Air traffic control cleared the Virgin Australia 737 “for a full-length take-off” on runway 34L, the ATSB said.

“As the crew applied thrust for take-off, they observed the Qantas 737 begin to cross the runway ahead of them from taxiway Lima.”

37th over: India 243-1 (Rohit 123, Kohli 36) Brook keeps Bethell on for a third over. He starts well before dishing up a long hop, on a platter. Kohli helps himself to a pull for four, then drives for two. Seven off the over, so Bethell has 3-0-15-0, which is a great effort in the circumstances, even if Rohit is struggling with his cramp.

36th over: India 236-1 (Rohit 122, Kohli 30) Curran continues and beats Kohli outside off – twice in a row. Brook might want to put a slip in. “Only four off his last 11 balls,” Mike Atherton says of Kohli, who then manages a single. Can Rohit produce another of his effortless fours? Not this time. He sends a dab past Rashid at backward point, but Duckett sweeps up. Curran bowls a slow bouncer, which Kohli misses as he dances down the track. Then there’s a better shot from Kohli, who drives past cover and picks up two. But it’s only four off the over, so the required rate rises to 10.85.

Rohit Sharma scripts history, becomes first Indian to score ODI century at Lord's; surpasses Sachin Tendu

9th over: England 74-2 (Salt 17, Bethell 1) Jacob Bethell off the mark with a leg glance to his first ball. Phil Salt is stinking the place out a little, he has 17 off 19 after being flummoxed by a slower ball bouncer and then finding the fielder with a full blooded pull shot.

Brook slaps Prince Yadav over extra cover for a one bounce four but the bowler gets his revenge with the next ball! Brook swipes into the leg side and sends a towering catch into the deep where Abishek Sharma clings on! The England captain on his way.

Nottingham weather forecast for England vs India: Chances of rain, average temperatures for 3rd T20I

India's search for a way back into their T20I series against England moves to the historic surrounds of Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Having fallen behind in the five-match contest, the visitors know a third defeat would leave them staring at a series loss.

England seized control by winning the second match in Manchester by four wickets, powered by Jacob Bethell's brilliant unbeaten 76. The game also saw teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his debut, though he managed only 14 in a losing cause for India.

With the series firmly on the line, both teams will be desperate for uninterrupted cricket in Nottingham. After a washout at Durham earlier in the series, all eyes will once again turn skywards. Here is the latest matchday forecast, rain outlook, and full viewing details.

Freese forced to make diving save in opening moments against Belgium

Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana exited Monday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against the U.S. in the opening half with an apparent knee injury.

Onana went down after attempting to play a ball in the 18th minute. He kicked out with his right leg and landed awkwardly as he fell, immediately grabbing at his right knee while on the ground.

Onana was slow to get to his feet and gingerly limped off the pitch. His teammates comforted him as he exited the playing field. Hans Vanaken replaced Onana in the 21st minute.

Amadou Onana injury update: Belgium midfielder's World Cup may be over

SEATTLE — Belgium lost Amadou Onana early to a leg injury in its 4-1 win in the round of 16 against the United States and the midfielder was on crutches after the game.

Coach Rudi Garcia told reporters that the injury may end the midfielder's World Cup.

Onana was challenging for the ball with USMNT star Christian Pulisic when they collided, and Onana immediately went down to the ground, holding his right knee as the Belgian staff was called onto the field to assist.

Onana did get up on his own as he made his way toward the bench, limping to rest if he could still continue. Ultimately, Belgium made a substitution, taking out Onana for Hans Vanaken in the 21st minute.

France opens third round of EV social leasing programme

The French government will open the third funding round of its social leasing scheme for electric cars on 16 July. The programme enables low-income employees to lease an electric vehicle at subsidised rates and forms part of France’s efforts to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.

As announced in April, the French government has officially launched the third phase of its social leasing scheme for electric vehicles. The programme, known as ‘leasing social de voitures électriques,’ is primarily aimed at low-income commuters. To qualify, applicants must either travel more than 10 kilometres each day by private car or drive more than 8,000 kilometres per year for work using their own vehicle.

Heatwave hacks EV drivers can leave behind, according to Hyundai

As temperatures soar across the UK, drivers are once again resorting to familiar heatwave habits: hunting for the last shady parking space, cracking windows open a few centimetres and debating whether it's worth turning the air conditioning on.

But according to Hyundai Motor UK, electric vehicle drivers can afford to be a little more relaxed thanks to a range of features and technologies designed to make hot weather driving more comfortable and convenient.

    1. Playing 'hunt the shade' in the supermarket car park: Most motorists are familiar with driving around endlessly in search of the one parking space that's partially covered by a tree. While shade is always welcome during a heatwave, many electric vehicles allow drivers to remotely cool the cabin before they return. That means parking in direct sunlight doesn't necessarily have to result in a sweat-inducing dash back to the driver's seat when they might have remote pre-conditioning technology allowing drivers to cool the vehicle before they even open the door.

Roos eye third straight win in Bombers clash. LIVE from 3.15pm AEST

AS IT eyes a top-10 finish this season, North Melbourne gets a chance to claim its eighth win of the season when it meets Essendon on Sunday.

North Melbourne (7-7) has won seven matches for the first time since 2019 and climbed back into the top 10 while still having plenty of room for improvement after a pair of less-than-convincing victories.

The Roos did what they needed to do in a low-scoring affair with the Tigers and can now pile more misery on the Bombers after snapping a 12-game losing streak against their rivals earlier this year.

Essendon (1-13) has been left searching for positives to carry it through to the end of the year off the back of a nine-game losing streak before heading into a bye.

Live: Kangaroos seek top 10 spot ahead of Dockers—Suns finale

Round 16 comes to a conclusion with the Kangaroos and Bombers at Docklands, followed by the Suns heading west to take on ladder-leaders Fremantle.

Essendon will be trying to win just its second match of the season, while the Kangaroos can break back into the top 10 with a victory.

Gold Coast has been in a form slump since its Darwin trip, but the Suns will hope to repeat their stunning historic finals win over the Dockers last year.

It's been a bit of ping-pong footy in the opening minute, but the Kangaroos steadied when they got hold of it in the middle.

Six-year first awaits Roos in shock wildcard charge as boosted Bombers eye upset — LIVE AFL

North Melbourne’s charge towards a shock wildcard appearance continues on Sunday afternoon at Marvel Stadium, as it looks to knock over an Essendon outfit that welcomes back several key cogs.

The Kangaroos (7-7, 90.7%) will be without star ruck Tristan Xerri as he recovers from jaw surgery, with fringe ruck Callum Coleman-Jones recalled to shoulder the load in his absence.

Meanwhile, the Bombers (1-13, 70.4%) have captain Andrew McGrath headlining several inclusions, with Jye Caldwell, Darcy Parish and Isaac Kako also back from injury. They will, however, be without Archie Roberts (shoulder) and Kyle Langford (quad).

83rd over: New Zealand 354-2 (Nicholls 29, Ravindra 7) Archer moves round the wicket and forces Nicholls to play at a series of fullish, straight deliveries. Eventually Nicholls guides one into the off side for a single; that’s the only run in the last 17 balls, which supports the view that New Zealand have shut up shop for a night.

If either batter gets out before the close, they’ll be filthy. There are still hundreds of runs out there for New Zealand.
